1963 GMC "Cracker Box"

I first heard this truck coming down NC 197 into Burnsville, NC. I later saw it leaving Ingles in Burnsville. I believe these trucks came with the 671 Detroit Deisels but I didn't get a chance to talk to the fella. He was too busy driving the hell out of this truck. Maybe he will see this video and let us know the whole story of this bad ass classic truck!

UNBELEIVABLE ! SHIFFTED 8 GEARS TO HIT 32 MPH. These 238's were fun to bobtail but to drive 7 days a week NOT SO MUCH

Way back then there was NO TRAFFIC. TRUST me you would hate the 238. I had one. Had to keep the left door closed for LONG periods

The Detroit 2 stroke sounds like a Napier Deltic (an opposed piston 2 stroke used in Navy ships and the British Rail Class 55).

GMC DFR model if I'm correct (I am a MACK bulldog fan B series to year 1966 when replaced by the mighty R series) BUT I DO Have a soft spot for GMC mainly because of their buses in the late 50's and 60's - mainly the new look buses. ok if im right it goes like this DFR meaning : D as in Diesel (6v71-/also choice of the Cummins/caterpillar OR D.D./8V71. "F" as in Forward front AXLE/wheels. "R" for single axle city Use tractor. replaced in 68 by the GMC astro 95 its twin? the CHEVY TITAN 90 of course discontinued in 79 -80

That Detroit should go quicker than that. Needs some decarbonizer additive in the fuel cleans out the crud in the cylinder bores, I'd check out the exhaust system, gaskets leaks muffler etc.

That truck was running great. Its gearing that makes it slow. As for the exhaust, it's straight piped so there is no muffler gaskets to leak. That truck was running strong and clean.

@@RedEyedJack Cheers thanks for the response. I can sound like a smart arse at times. I meant the gasket between the head and manifold, maybe not an issue on a Detroit but certainly improves performance on a 4 stroke petrol engine and fitting new spark plugs. You have a rare truck. Running a 238 50 yrs ago was tuff. You would probably do it one day now before you told the dispatcher give me a real TRUCK

I could run faster than that thru the first three gears... I just couldn't pull a 45,000 lb trailer while I did it :)
