On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago IL on 7-28-21.
We're looking at a 1963 Pontiac Catalina in Black Paint. The car comes with the 421 CI V8 “Super Duty” “SD” engine and manual 4 speed transmission.
The car's Owner is Russ Toms. Russ has had this car since 2017. Russ shared his Friend had the car for a long time, and then he was able to purchase the car. The factory parts on this car are original “Super Duty” parts, and make this car a wonderful tribute to the original car.
ENJOY!

Those eight lug wheels were some of the smartest looking wheels I've ever seen. Early sixty's model Pontiac's were elegant looking in their own right, but those wheels made them stand out from the crowd. This is the rarest Catalina I've ever gotten to see.

Growing up in Detroit during this era there were numerous GM employees in our neighborhood. In particular was a Pontiac engineer that was into drag strip racing. I remember he had a blue Catalina Super Duty with aluminum front fenders, no sound insulation ,no power steering or brakes, heater and radio delete also. This car was very fast and he accumulated many street and strip victories. When he opened the dump tubes the ground would vibrate! I never saw another exactly like his again.

The 60's was Pontiac's greatest decade. They were the leader in many ways. Most of the decade they were 3rd in manufactures sales. My family's first Pontiac was a 62 Catalina which later became my first car. Pontiac has been my favorite manufacturer from that time on. I have had 15 over the years and currently have an original 74 Trans Am. This 63 SD 421 represents Pontiac at its best. You mentioned the Swiss cheese frame at that time to show what extent Pontiac would go to win by shaving the extra pounds off the car to be as light as Chevys, Fords and Plymouths. In addition to all the aluminum parts on this particular car, aluminum body panels could also be added for further weight reduction. Pontiac was still pulling a rabbit out of their hat with the SD 455 Firebirds in 1973 and 1974 when the muscle car world was all but dead. No one was more sad than me when Pontiac came to an end in 2010. Many young people know Pontiac only as an unexciting car that ended in 2010. Thanks to Russ and Lou for showing how great the Pontiac brand was.

Lou, yet another rare and amazing peice of Americana. My dad sold Pontiacs in the early '60's and owned a 62' Bonneville 389. This car is fantastic. I might add '63 was the first model year for the stacked headlights which I believe ran through at least the '66 models. Such an identifiable look. That 421 was a beast. Pontiac was king at the track during this period. I hope your viewers appreciate what you have shown here. Thx.

I still own a 1964 Pontiac Catalina convertible that came with 4 on the floor and bucket seats. It still has the 2+2 emblems and the 421 emblems on the car. The original 421 with the three deuce steup was long gone when I purchased it, however I do remember the exhaust had cut outs coming off of the headers. I bought it from my brother in about 1977. Saint Paul Minnesota. He was upset that the radiator froze up on it here during a Minnesota winter. I took advantage when he said he would sell it to me for $100. As I understand it, he purchased from someone who came in to my dad's gas station. This man said his son was in the service and that he needed to sell his car for him. So anyways... A lot of fond memories attached to that car. Went through a few engines. I believe it has a 389 in it currently. Last started probably about 2000. Was forced to remove it from my mom's property (where I had kept it stored, covered, outdoors for 35 years - I moved it twice a year. On and off the street) in Saint Paul Minnesota in about 2006. Paid for outdoor storage after that and kept a plastic sheet and tarp over it up until about 2017. I quit paying storage that year, but i am pretty sure it is still there. It still has solid fenders, hood and trunk lid. Even the interior floor was still there last time I saw it in 2018. Last person to look at it rolled their eyes and offered me $500. He said that "Everyone thinks they have gold." ... he then left without the car. That was in 2017. Anyone who may be interested leave a reply here. If you tube does not censor it I will respond.
@lancelink29
@lancelink29 Год назад
I also collected many extra parts, chrome interior trim, etc. for a 1964 convertible Pontiac Catalina from junkyards back in the day. I am 62 now, I live in northern Wisconsin and if someone wants that stuff I have no use for the internet beyond youtube. Give me a reply here and we can talk.

Interesting how similar are the rear end and taillight configurations between this Catalina and the ‘64 Continental. And Lou… if you ever had to eliminate “shall we?” from your vocabulary, nothing would ever happen in your videos. 😂 Thanks, Lou! ~ John

There you go, Pontiac SD's are the hottest on the street. Great car. The cars in the early 60's are much lighter than later cars because of the simpler bumpers and no emmission junk. Bet that bad boy hauls the mail.

@@loucostabile Thanks Lou, I just purchased a book from Art Fitzpatrick and Lou Kaufman. It shows all of the automotive art from the 60. We (my older brother Cliff) have been in contact with the widow of Art Fitzpatrick and the book is world class. It has not only pics, but bio's as well. A fine job on that Swiss cheese girl!

Hi, Lou! In 1963, Pontiac was the big trendsetter. The split grille had already been a division hallmark for a few years, and it was in 1963 that the full-size Pontiacs introduced what was popularly called the "Coke bottle" profile. They were also first fitted with the stacked headlamps. They weren't the first cars to have them, but they were a feature a lot of the competition soon began to copy. Just from these things alone, even a relatively plain two-door Catalina sedan like this was a styling standout. BTW, I did meet Arnie Beswick at a Pontiac-Oakland Club convention many years ago. A couple of questions: First, what does Russ mean by a "Swiss cheese car?" And second, I noticed this car has parallel windshield wipers instead of the dual-facing wipers these cars typically had. That struck me strange, because although the Tempest had parallel wipers from the beginning, the big Pontiacs didn't have them until 1970. If anybody can explain, please reply. Anyway, thanks to you and Russ for this glorious ride
