I have the cousin to your car: A 1963 Mercury Meteor S-33 with the bucket seats, console, Merc-O-Matic, PS/PB and I bought it from the original owner. I have every receipt and even the dealer window sticker. 100% original red on red. Three summers ago, I noticed it started to get some minor rust here and there so I stripped it completely down, rechromed all chrome components and had it brought down to bare metal with a complete respray. I ran out of money so it's been sitting for over a year now but I am determined this summer to bring her back to life and back on the road. Your video inspires me to bring my car back to the living. Thank you!

Aussie here. I had a '64 Fairlane 500, my first car in 1974 soon after I got my driver license. It was a 260 cu in V8, 2 speed auto, 4 door in perhaps that same colour, green velvet. I loved American cars from the 60's and early 70's. It had a few problems, to be honest I rescued it from the wrecking yard and fixed it up a bit, gave it a new paint job myself and drove it around for a few years. How I loved that V8 burble from the dual exhausts with some revs under it. I had two more Fairlanes after that, a 1970 and '76. Times move on, now I'm down to 6 cylinders with a Falcon FG XR6 which I may have to keep for a long time since we don't make them (or any other car) anymore. So thanks for the video, it brought memories flooding back and good luck with it.

Great car. I have the same car. The color is Guardsman Blue. I found my Fairlane sitting under an old tree since 1982. It’s a K code with original hipo 289 4 speed with buckets seats. Been working on it for the last couple years. Videos like this give me motivation to finish it up. Thanks

I saved and worked my backside off to buy that same car as my first car. I was about $150 short, went to see if I could put down what I had to hold the car when I got there it was gone my heart dropped. I got home from school and was getting ready to go to work and my Father handed me a set of keys and said "park that dam bike and take this" It was my car! He told me that I could shoot that engine with a shotgun and still drive away. I had it for 8 years and had to sell it when I started a family. Sure miss her. Peace.

He and I talked all the time about getting it running agin, but now it's up to me to do it. My plan is to do work on it this week. It is stored at our towing yard, and our mechanic (who is into hot rods) is going to work on it with me. I'm really excited to give it life again.

Ok! If I had to try and start this Fairlane 500. I go down to the parts store and buy cap,rotor, oil and a new oil filter, plug wires, battery, plugs, . To give me a chance to get it running right from the start. I pulled a 1971 Torino 500 next to a garage with a 302 in it. It had been sitting for years. My first real car. Paid $100.00 down and $50.00 for the next 4 weeks. Hand wrote contract with a older family friend. He let me drive it home that rainy day. The wiper blades rubbers were gone. Drove home 10 miles with head out the driver's door window. With a big smile on my face. I was young and living large. Never even touched a engine or knew what to do to a engine. Got a book and read up on how to fix a car that hadn't run in a while. The older gentleman was impressed but wasn't to sure I knew what to do to get it started. After changing out the items above and then decided to pump out old gas and putting in 5 fresh gallons in the tank. I received the keys from the previous owner and said here goes nothing. I turned the key and the 302 with 130,000 miles on the clock roared to life with blue and black exhaust coming from the duals. A cloud over took us as we backed away to breathe. I did a liitle dance. The old man said she's alive again. The hood had a dent at the hinge on the driver side and and rust at the fender wells. The tires were a little bald but held air. The engine warmed up and the idle smoothed out too. I got back behind the wheel putting the transmission in drive and reverse to see if it would move under it's own power. It was time to check the brake fluid and brakes to see if it was safe for the short drive home. The brake pedal was spongy but not to the floor. Leaving the driveway and still holding my breath. It was underway. The tires were flat spotted but rolling. In the back of my mind I was concerned what my Father, would say about my purchase. I continued to work on the Torino. Newer tires, wiper blades and stereo system and speakers. I miss that car! Got married that next year! Sold that old Ford for $225. Bought a used 76 Ford Granada. Still driving a Ford to this day. I love seeing the old cars sputter to life after sitting unattended for so many years. I am somewhat confused and maybe you do these things off camera before trying to turn them over but a couple things I would check is #1 for good oil in the crankcase, #2 pop the distributor cap to see if the points are clean and can produce good spark and #3 pull the plugs and rotate by hand to see if compression is produced by the valves opening and closing properly without one being stuck open for the piston to hammer on. Keep up the good work. My concerns are just that I love to see the old engines massaged a little before making them jump to life ha.

This care sure brings back my Dads Medium Blue Meteor, I still remember the sound of the engine. There is no valve adjustment on those engines 289 302 you just torgue the rocker pedestals to 30 ft pounds and lifters do the rest why I say this because it is a hydraulic cam and lifters when the engine oil pressure builds up it causes those lifters to pump.up.and take up the valve stem clearance you would have when cold if it doesn't do that it's either dirty lifters sticking causing valves to be tapping or something wrong with in the engine inside
@davidstinson5095
@davidstinson5095 5 лет назад
On the Chevy 350 engine you do have to adjust the valves it's called static valve adjustment so you get zero lash at the rocker arm to valve stem if not properly achieve motor will.be noisy or valve to tight will back fire through intake manifold it will run like crap

This has a "Green Dot" transmission. Notice the green dot ! That was Drive (1-2-3). The first white dot past N is 2 - car starts off in 2nd gear, then into 3rd or Drive. This was a great idea from Ford that if you were on ice or snow, starting off in 2nd really helped getting traction without spinning. Most people were used to shifting past N to Drive - not 2nd. So they were starting off in 2nd instead of 1st. The result was people were burning up transmissions like crazy. Ford fixed this problem in 1966 and went with the standardized P R N D 2 L configuration. I'm no expert but seems to me the problem was fixed in the valve body only, so swapping out the stock valve body for the '66 C4 valve body, gave it the regular shift pattern.

My dad had a 64 Country Squire station wagon with that safety switch in the gear shift. I thought it was just a mis-adjustment we had to pull on the gear shift to start it. This is the first car other than his that I've seen with it.

Ugh, I'm looking for a decent 63/64 wagon galaxie wagon if you ever come across one. Tbh I think it's just a wearable bushing that's worn over time that's causing it... but I have other plans that won't require that for shifting in the future😉

We use to have a 65, but sold it last summer. Black with red interior! I wasn't a fan of the lines at first, but after starring at it for some time I began to appriciatie It! Similar to early impalas almost. When the 65s are lowered I think it'd look really sharp

My '65 was twilight turquoise with white vinyl buckets. I think Ford got the styling right in '66 but '65 looked a bit off. Yeah, maybe lowering would do the trick.

Sounds like you've got a vacuum leak somewhere. Spray some carb cleaner around the manifold and carb. If the engine hesitates at some point, this may give you a general location to look for the vacuum leak's source.
