My late next door neighbor's son has one just like it that my neighbor bought him for his first car a half century ago. He just got done overhauling it. As his sister inherited the house when mom and dad died, and now lives next door, he's up here with that old jeep all the time. He absolutely loves that thing. One taillight, no turn signals (never did have), rattles and clanks and bangs, but he is having a blast with it. I think I'd have to turn a leaf blower on that thing first, and get all the mouse mess out of it.

The object you found (the steel hockey puck) is for driving steel fence posts into the ground. It fits over the post top and then you slip a fencepost driver pipe over the top for extra weight. Its purpose is to protect the top of the post from mushing up and distorting when pounding the post in. Without its use, the post top can get so mushed up (upon re-use) that a post pounder will not slip over the post top any more. Pete from Prescott

My first car was a 1974 Datsun 1200. My parents got two of them for 600.00. I got one. My sister got one. My first purchase was the repair manual. Good thing too. My sister kept blowing head gaskets because she didn't know that you couldn't continue to drive when the temp needle reached the red line. I got it down to 15 minutes to change a head gaskets. 45 minutes with wrenches, 15 with air tools. I also learned about helicoils. Ya know that if you turn a head bolt clockwise with a big enough wrench, they will loosen up. ah. yeah. By stripping out the threads. Hence the experience with helicoils. One of the backyard mechanic techniques I learned was called the 30 second tune up. You rev up the engine, and drizzle water down the intake. The engine will run slower so you press the accelerator harder. This exploding water will steam clean the pistons, spark plugs and rings. As soon as you stop drizzling water you let off the throttle. You don't want to over rev the engine. You also don't want to pour the water in to fast or you risk blowing up the engine. lol. Then you stop the engine, swap the number 1 and 4 spark plug wires, and start the engine. (apposing cylinders on a 4 cylinder) It will run real rough, but will backfire a whole lot and blow all the crap out of the carburetor jets. You only need to run the engine for 30 seconds. Swap the wires back and your off and running again. lol. I also learned 3 ways to set the timing. (distributor). 1. Use a timing light. That doesn't work very well with a stretched timing chain. 2. Hook up a vacuum gauge to the intake manifold, the vacuum advance line from the distributor is a good place to place the gauge. Then advance/retard the distributor for max vacuum and minimal bounce of the needle. 3. Advance the timing and pump the throttle, till the engine does not hesitate. Then Lug out the engine, 4th gear at 10mph with full throttle typically works good. If the engine pings, retard the timing a slight bit, tighten down the distributor and your good to go. Method 3 is the simplest and works the best. I am older and wiser now. I love your videos. Great stuff and never boring. I learn new stuff all the time from them. Keep doing what you are doing.
