In this video we dig deep into the suspension of the 1965 Comet. We find some problematic suspension parts and show you how to replace them. We also perform an easy and cheap suspension upgrade known as the "Arning" or "Shelby" drop. All it requires is a drill bit (17/32) an a little bit of patience to improve your suspension geometry and make your classic handle better.
In the next video we hop back into the engine bay and show you which route we are taking for the drivetrain and also begin some other improvements/upgrade to the car!

I bought my 1965 Comet Cyclone brand new at the age of 17. Special ordered it and paid cash. 271horsepower and four speed and dual exhaust. Power steering but the power brakes got mistakenly left out of the order. I won't say I never get rid of anything, but I still have it. 71,000 miles. In my 1965 Comet Caliente I have a Ford Motorsports 427 thumping out a touch over 500 horses. Love the stacked headlights and the overall look of the 65 Comets. Thank you for your videos. Enjoyable watching.

Thank you! I always look at it as Ford's GTO (but better imo). 65 was the same year that the GTO went with the stacked head lights up front. The Comet has the defined lines down the side, and the tail likes between the two are very similar. I love the colour as well, i think it will look cool with what I have in mind for wheels/stance. Stayed tuned for future episodes, she's gonna get ALOT more loving! Cheers Mike

I did the Shelby drop on my 67 Cougar years ago, have liked the ride, but finally spent the money on a set of roller bearing spring perches and installed those over the winter. Looking forward to seeing how they smooth out the drive, particularly since my cat is manual steering - with wider tires, my arms get a workout.

Like the body style on these car's. Mostly because I am a full size Ford Guy. These remind me of the bid car's. Nothing wrong with the Mustangs. Just like a little more car. 🤘😎🇺🇸

Good work as normal. When I replaced the suspension on my 67 Mustang, The front was the easy part at least as far as taking it apart went. It was those rear leaf springs that turned out to be a big pain. The bolts in the front eye holes had rusted to the sleeve and would not come out. Took a lot of cutting and cussing to get those out.

In 1967 we put shackles on to the rear now that was cool! I personally do care for lower cars. If you want a lower car buy a sports car! Of corse I am just an ACM (arm chair mechanic). Keepon keepin on! GOD bless

I've always thought it was interesting how Ford was maybe 40 years ahead in the hard angular look of that era - ahead of say Caddy when they came out with that shocker look with the CTS and others. And how the Comet looked more like a mini-me Galaxie than the Falcon did. I wouldn't call it beautiful. But I still really like it. As if the goal was to not put a radius on anything. LOL

Have you looked at the roller spring perches from OpenTracker? Really slick setup, was hoping to run them on my car, until I realized the spring sits directly in the upper arm, no saddle! Back to the drawing board...

I did the shelby drop on my 67 fairlane last summer. I added some new coil springs that are a little softer while I was there that dropped the car a little more than an inch from where it was. After an alignment etc...I ended up with some pretty harsh bumpsteer that I have to work on after I get it out of storage.

Hey i also have a 67 fairlane gt. And wanted to do this... I read that in 67 mid year production till the end ..they made the change already. There is a way to check it. If you have chims its cause its done already. Wanted to know if it was worth it.

@@philjaneiro1638 I've never heard of a stock front end getting the shelby drop from the factory...could be wrong I guess...mine didn't have any shims. As for it being worth it I'm not sure yet...got it done at the end of the summer and the bumpsteer really annoyed me and I didn't have the time to mess with it. I plan on getting it out of storage soon and addressing it.

Yeah, I think I felt that one. I would of welded a one eighth plate on the top of that frame rail so it would deflect the dirt from collecting into that frame rail trough. Especially, now, that it most likely will be a Canadian car from now on.

I have a video on this car getting upgraded to discs. You can still run 14” wheels, but if they are steelie wheels, they’ll need to be disc brake steelies (drum brake ones are different, explained in my video). I have a question, I just found ur channel and I'm just starting a 65 comet 2dr sedan that has a 200 v6 and power steering, I'm building a 302 for it and am going to use 75-80 granada spindles to switch over to disc brakes on the front. My question is, can I order a front v8 suspension kit for a 65 comet and bolt it right in or are they completely different? Thank you in advance for your time and videos!!

Hello Darin, the Granada spindle if I remember correctly utilizes a larger tie rod. If you were to order a 65 Comet v8 steering kit, the tie rods would be too small for the spindles. Mustang Steve sells a kit/ tapered sleeve that would make it work. Check out his website first before ordering everything. It's been a while since I looked into all of this so jut going off of memory (don't take my word as concrete information).

The Arning "Shelby drop" is mostly for better handling on the track....I don't think that it changes the tire patch really... Was it really necessary here..? Just wondering...and scratching my head on this one..

Mike @theoldcarchannel, thinking of purchasing a '65 comet caliente from a guy my Mom dated before she passed. Are there certain things I should look for pre purchase? It has a 200CI inline 6 and a 3 speed, not sure if it's the column shift 3 speed or the merc-O-matic push button 3 speed. Any info would be great. Thanks. Also from Ontario in the Niagara Region.

Hello Mike, assuming it's an Ontario car... I'd be worried about the condition of the body (frames, torque boxes, floors, all doors trunk and hood seams, etc). It's it a 2 door? Posy or non post? And how much are they asking?

He is asking $5000, there might be wiggle room. That's the price he was offered in 1986 lol, but said that's what he would give it to me for.

My dad had a 64 Comet Caliente. It was a 4 door/w/a 200ci 6cyl.🤢 ANYWHO, the base of ur shock tower looks GOOD. My dad's was all rusted out. But urs is ONE UGLY COLOR.🤢 My dads was a turquiose metallic. I LOVE THE body shape of those!
