Great video - my door won’t ‘lock’ and stay locked. I push the lock down but pushing the door handle button opens the door like it was never locked. Any thought/idea what could be causing this? Also, I’m not real sure how to undo the door release rod and I noticed you didn’t cover this part. Is it difficult to do? Thanks again!

Tim, what year and model car are you having this issue with? Around time stamp 7:25 I am reinstalling the rods the actuate the door latch, and the normal fastener is some type of clip. Your door release rod should be attached by with either a clip or pressed into a bushing/clip fastener to hold it in place. It’s real difficult to see what’s going on due to the small space these items are located in. Try using your phone camera to assess the situation.

Not sure why the door would unlock when pressing the outside handle button. Seems like the rods are the wrong position, but I don’t think you can attach the inner lever rod to the latch that the outer handle button uses and vise versa. Only the inner door lever should unlock the door when used.

@@MichaelEd I am having this issue with my '65 Mustang.

Hmmmm, Check out that time stamp in my video. You’ll see two rods coming from the handle, one is for the button and the other is for the lock knob. The other one goes from the handle to the latch mechanism. Check your set up to make sure each rod attached to the proper position on the latch and orientation to ensure function.

Bought my 1965 Mustang conv. in 1969. Actually from a corporation who thought the block was cracked. It was a water pump. Paid $125 for the car. It's completely original but sat in a barn for 30 years and top is history. Always had trouble with passenger side door so now won't close. Latch not holding. New latch is $60. But probably needs this bushing also. Thanks for the info.

This was a great video, thanks for taking the time to show all the inter working of the door rods. I started working on those door rods about 3 days ago and doing a lot research on the internet saw the drawings on CJP put wasn’t much help because all the parts were missing in my doors. Someone had use wire to the hold the rods in place, no that didn’t work. Anyway this was the only video I have found on these bushings for the 65/66 Mustang. Thanks again I’m your newest subscriber!

Thank you so much for this video. I went to put in new door locks only find that exact peice being held together with zip ties. You saved me from having to take the door panel back off of the good door to figure out what the issue is.

Thanks, this helped a ton. I got it back together and found that I couldn't lock the door. I took it back apart and the problem was that the rod to the outside lock was getting hung up on the new bushing. I had to bend the rod to the lock so it would move freely. Also, the red washer should be outside where you put the black washer, not in the middle, at least that's how it was originally in my car before I replaced it. The black one should be in the middle.

Those panels are easy abused the more you handle them. Definitely check for operation before putting the door panel back on. I’m glad it you got it repair/rebuilt and working, and appreciate your comment, and watching my video. What year is your car? Be sure and check out my other videos on my channel and subscribe.😎👍

Question will this also cause a door not to close
@MichaelEd
@MichaelEd 5 лет назад
Logan Curnow I can’t say that it couldn’t, because that bushing might be damaged and interfering with the latch mechanism. There could be several things wrong if your door won’t latch when you close it. I would test the latch using something like a rod or even a screwdriver to manually actuate the latch to assure that it is working properly or not. Then depending on its functionality you can assess wether you need to pull the door panel off, or look at your striker and it positioning and door alignment to make sure the latch jaws are contacting properly when closed. That is where I would start the process of diagnosing. Just my thoughts.

Original fiber board or repo plastic door panel backing material? If Ford knew then what they know now, those panel clips might have been a better design. You are not alone, my friend. I know I can Definitely relate to the situation.

My 65 passenger door doesn't always latch, and the door randomly opens while going down the road. I've developed mobility issues since buying the car, and may be forced to sell😒😒😒

Sorry to hear about your troubles. Could be a few things with your door: Hinges could be loose and/or wore out and causing the door no to properly shut. Door latch assembly could be worn or loose, Striker plate may be misaligned or out of adjustment. Those would be a good place to start checking to help diagnose the issue. Hopefully this’ll help you figure out the problem, Thanks for chiming in. 👍

My OCD wasn’t in full affect that day. lol This part is mounted inside the door and working parts are not visible. All it needs is to be wiped down and greased for proper function. Nothing wrong with keeping things clean and fresh, I just didn’t see the need in doing that to a part like this.
