1965 GTO Classic Custom Paintless Dent Repair

Modern repair methods for a 1965 GTO. This was a custom build GTO (GTO front clip on a Pontiac Wagon). The custom build put on modern paint and finish with a custom colour and modern base/clear. Usually, when a custom complete paint is done, it's hard to match the colour and finish. This car is blocksanded flat and so the refinish on this is not easy with the colour matching, blending and flattening afterwards. So what if we can repair the crease dent without damaging the paint? This is where Paintless Dent Repair comes in.
So the owner did some research and was recommended to us to restore the deep crease on the lower door without having the need to repaint his car. Not every PDR company will go to this extent to repair a dent. It's a good amount of work and detail.
Conventional autobody repair is even more work since the paint needs to be stripped in the repair area before metalwork, filling, and sanding before any paint is applied. Traditional bodywork and PDR is vastly different, don't be suprised to hear that if bodytechs and PDR techs exchange tools they would not be able to perform the others jobs!
This is old metal so it is heavier gauge than modern vehicles. It really needed sharp force to overcome this crease. I used Stanliner brand tools and their techniques to bring in the metal with force but gently. It is imperative to not add extra stretch to the panel since it is already somewhat overstretched already from the impact.
I'm pretty impressed that the modern paint survived and didn't crack from the impact because it was quite a strike to make a crease like this on heavier gauge sheetmetal.

List of tools used if for educational purpose:
- Pulling ... none since adhesion quality of this paint is unknown
- Pushing ... Stanliner fender tool (interchangeable tip), Stanliner Straight 1/2" Snake, Stanliner straight crane/sword hybrid

At the finish it looks good, but pushing from 0-90% was little bit to aggressive for this caind of job. I would've go up progressively with a permanent controlled temperature to keep the paint and metal flexible. I didn't see if you were using protected tips. Any way, great result. Keep it up.

Hi Marin. Yes I did have heat on from 0-75% at about 170F-ish constant. I don't usually use protected tips actually. I like to have direct metal contact for more control and prevention of more stretch. For this metal and how deep the the impact was, I was concerned about have "extra" metal to hide. Thanks for your feedback and, I will think about being less aggressive on this type of repair. The metal was quite thick and there was spray on hard sound deadener to deal with under this crease, so it kinda needed sharpness to push. You could say the hard sound deadener was my soft tip, which I did not enjoy at all. I you pause the repair part you will see I use no tip at all just the edge of the interchangable tip rod!

@@VanDentProHi Van. I had only an observation, just for the pleasure of talking over the job like any other Technician, I didn't judged your work. A small opinion if you don't mind, " I would've use a fine polish before starting, just to clean the surface. That's a game changer. Nice talking, like I said, the results was very good.

@Marin. Hey I'm sorry if I came across defensive. I need to learn to listen better. I appreciate the suggestion. The polish idea sounds good. I like to work on a clean surface too and would it be good for the paint too? Thank you for the compliment!
