1965 Mustang Single Bore Master Cylinder Rebuild 4 Wheel Drum Brake.
Tips. When removing the seals and spring be sure to use a light tapping of a hammer or a flat blade screwdriver to wiggle out the piston.
When reinstalling use a round punch and tap the cylinder and seal through, it will get stuck in the snap ring groove. Once you have it through the snap ring grove hold pressure with your finger or the punch and with your other hand reinstall the snap ring. This is the most difficult part of the entire process.
The last tip is to use some brake fluid to lubricate the seals as you install them. Happy Motoring!

But, the instructions for the syringe show the syringe on the exit port sucking out brake fluid from the bowl - holding the syringe vertical to expel any air - and then pushing all that brake fluid back into the exit port and up into the bowl while looking for any trapped bubbles. On my old master cylinder, I can push fluid in reverse through the port and up into the bowl. On my new (rebuilt) unit, I can't. I wonder if it just because the spring is stronger on the new unit or if there is a blockage somewhere. I even tried 100 psi of air pressure and couldn't blow backwards up into the bowl. Looks like I'm going to have to do a disassembly on the "new" master cylinder. My problem with the "new" master cylinder started after I vacuum bled the brakes twice. I had brake pedal with the new unit before bleeding the brakes but lost brake pedal after bleeding. I wonder where dirt could come from with the new master cylinder in place? It'll be interesting to find out - and aggravating.

I just purchased a hone tonight. I couldn't get the piston/seals out last night. So I been soaking it in penetrating oil overnight. The auto parts store didn't have a rebuild kit, but I'm sure I can order one online. This master cylinder is a spare, I found in the trunk of the car. Probably was from a junkyard. Figured I'd try to rebuild it first, and learn from the experience. The original master cylinder is still in the car. The car was running, when parked in a garage 33 years ago. Thanks again!!!

Very cool! Have you been able to remove the seals yet? If the bore is pitted you won't want to rebuild it as the seal will not be effective due to the damaged and bore. We purchased our kit from CJ Pony Parts

Yes, it took me a bit, to get it apart. Unfortunately, it's pitted badly. And I don't think a hone will help it. I looked at having it re-sleeved, and that's twice the cost of buying a rebuilt one. Also the washer, as you called it, was missing. I still have the one on the car. Hopefully it's in better condition. The master in the car is slightly different. It has a small pipe plug in it, above where the line connects. I read somewhere, this is for a car, that doesn't have the brake light switch on the pedal. So I wonder if it wasn't replaced before?

if you use put mineral oil in your master cylinder you risk damaging rubber seals. Maybe better to hone with brake fluid. Otherwise a great video, thanks!

Thanks for that Tip Buddy! My thing is that is I use brake fluid I will ruin my tool. So I use Mineral Oil of some kind, and then rinse with brake fluid before replacing the seals! Happy Motoring-Blair
