1966 Dodge Coronet 426 Hemi Muscle Car Of The Week Video Episode #135
1966 saw the introduction of the 426 Street Hemi, a slightly more docile version of the mighty 426 race version from the previous several years. In this video, we take a look at an otherwise unassuming 1966 Dodge Coronet 440 that features a Hemi / 4-speed punch, and is still in its original condition. From the Brothers Collection.

I feel fortunate I ordered a 1966 Hemi coronet when I was young. I ordered it with the Hemi Engine $897.00 extra, No power stirring,no power brakes, no air cnd. Bench Seat 4 Spd Trans. and all the special equipment that was required when you ordered the Hemi. The car is basically stock except the cam was replaced with a hyd. Roller. and Stahl Headers. I retained all original equipment so it could bee returned to stock.I still have the original car , with 29000 miles. still immaculate. Maroon color, original interior.

My dad bought a 66 Coronet 440, 383 4-speed in March of 66. At the time I was a freshman in college. Options included AM radio and 3.23 sure grip. Sticker price was $3,120. Exterior color was medium metallic blue with two-tone blue interior. I loved that car and I am now restoring a 440/auto with a 512 B (400) engine, "dressed" to look like an original 383. Color is W1 white with gold interior. This car is very fast especially with 4:30 sure grip gears. Coronet is almost finished lacking only a few trim pieces. I plan to pass this car on to my son.

To me, when I see any 66 Coronet regardless of the hidden powerplant, it screams tough. That's just the era where I come from I guess. There is a 4 door 66 Sedan in my area, and it even looks serious. It's an amazing and timeless bodystyle, and I think it was truly ahead of its time with such an open amount of greenhouse. Thanks so much for the profile. Cheers, Mark.

Dad used to have a '66 coronet, not a hemi unfortunately, but a nice car nonetheless. people might call them boxy but i think they are one of dodge's best designs

I'm always thinking crazy stuff like that, you'd have to go to a city, and find a really old guy that's owed a building with a parking garage for 50 years, then when you go back you park the cars there and sign a 50 year lease, and pay 50 years rent in advance.

I was a sophomore in college when a friend of mine (rich Dad....me, poor Dad) got him a Coronet with the 440 engine instead of the street hemi. Trust me, the 440 engine was no slouch. We went to local A&W to get away from the college food and see if there was any street action. Long story, short.....after a few rides (1/4 mile at a time), I was extremely happy to be safe in my dorm room that night still in one piece. Prior to that evening I'd had no experience with a 440 Magnum or the 727 Torq-Flite....I could not believe that an auto trans could stand up to the rigors of that engine + street racing and shift so fast and reliably. A real eye-opener for a green kid.....

I'm a boomer and remember these cars when they were new. The drag racing guys in my town favored the 440 over the Hemi because it was more reliable and consistent. And also because of consistency and to reduce stress to the drivetrain, they preferred the Tourqueflite automatic over the 4-speed.

I drove more than one in 1966, on the Illinois Tollway they had Chrysler, and Oldmobile for patrol vehicles, neither had a chance against these hemi's top speed was well above 140 mph despite the 4:10 rear end ratio.

Not a two-door sedan, but a two-door hardtop. Unibody construction enabled Chrysler to eliminate the B pillar, so when all windows were down, seen from the side was a beautiful uninterrupted silhouette.

Awesome and beautiful muscle Coronet. The police used the Coronet with the police interceptor engine. These Coronets were well built by real muscles, wasn't the charger a Coronet with the back cut off? Thanks for the updates of information on the real American made muscle cars.

I can’t help but remember stories I’ve heard about Chrysler installing the full-race Hemi in a limited number of Dodge and Plymouth (for the latter, the Fury model). Hardtops from the 1965 model year that Chrysler had to build for the “public” so they could qualify them to compete in NASCAR. In the mid-60s the old Car and Driver magazine claimed a gang of disruptive young engineers at Chrysler would bypass the fuddie-duddies in senior management and sneak off at night to prowl Woodward Ave in one one of those monsters, hoping to encounter their opposite numbers from Ford and GM. The young bucks at Ford would be piloting Galaxies with a 427 side-oiler built for the GT40 to run at Lemans. There were Fairlanes with this spec, built using fiberglass body panels and aluminum bumpers - mostly bought by NHRA professionals. Or a Vette sporting GM’s L88 trim - a racing-spec 427 with a cast iron block in place of the aluminum block from the race engine. The car’s power, in the mid-60s, was equivalent to the ZR-1 that came later. What a time to be alive!

Yeah, like that black Charger in Bulitt. It first appears in the scene where McQueen is about to get into his Mustang, but stops to look around. The camera follows his field of view. And there it is: the most malevolent looking automobile shot in the history of the movies, a black 1968 Dodge Charger RT with 440 Magnum. In track testing before shooting the chase scene this car blew away the 390 Mustang. They had to fit extra-skinny tires to the Charger to slow it down in the corners so the Mustang could stay with it.

Although understated in design, it has all the right racy/muscle car queues. The Hemi badge is a big give away .. lol. I love the visibility in this generation. The newer muscle are bunkers. Or is that just me ?

440 and 500 did not pertain to body style, it was the trim level. All 1966 Coronets were the same body style.
