My parents had one in the late 80s. Being a stupid teenager, I didn’t appreciate it and was a little embarrassed to drive a 25 year old car. 30+ years later, I realize what grace and class these older cars had and honestly wish I had one now.

Always loved the styling of the Monaco, especially those taillights, rear end and grille. It was just so classy and distinctive looking.

Very interesting, my mother owned a 66 Monaco w/the 4 barrel 383 and the buckets/console, but it wasn't a 500. Triple black, but the instrument panel was different ( in Canada?)in that it had a large square speedometer, not the twin bezel shown here. Incidentally, the rear was very comfortable and easily accessible. I learned to drive on this car, one of my absolute favourites, still!

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! When I was a kid this car with those taillights was my dream car. Can’t believe I never bought one. I thought they were too big when I started buying Valiants and Darts in the 70’s and 80’s.

While growing up, my parents had a 65 Dodge Polara convertible and a 67 Monaco wagon. My first car was a 68 Monaco 4dr sedan. So yes I’m familiar with them. All with 383s. Peppy around town but not a muscle car.

The thing about Chrysler Torsion bar cars is they didn't quite float over the bumps like Ford's or GM's. On the flipside of that though they didn't boat like them in the corners either.. I much rather give up a little ride comfort for better handling. The downside for me to the 1966 Monaco is one year later and you got the dual master cylinder. No whoosh sound and all your brakes gone save the parking brake. The other downside to me is the 383. I'd rather have the 440. Then if I had to choose between a 383 or the 318 I'd take the 318.

The "triangle" is actual called a "FRATZOG" by Dodge, if you look at the hood ornament you can see it better. They needed a name for it and that's what they decided on. They used it on hub caps and other parts too. So if you do another older Dodge and it has this emblem, you'll know what to call it.
@markhealey9409
@markhealey9409 7 месяцев назад
Cool & interesting! I recognized it as an old skool Dodge emblem from the 50s & 60s....but I didn't know it was called a Fratzog!! 🤣🤣 Very strange name! 😳😳

@@markhealey9409 In the Sixties Chrysler was involved with the " Space Race" and snuck little things like this on cars as a reminder. It's like Plymouth using the Mayflower ship as its symbol.

290 gross hp is approx 210 net. All hp (and torque) numbers were quoted gross until 1972. Nice clean styling for a change on that Dodge though.

Zack, As far as I know, RU-vid is still waiting for a Dodge MONACO vs Buick RIVIERA vs Chevrolet MONTE CARLO video 🤔 Of course , the most famous Monaco of all is the one driven by the Blues Brothers. 🤩

I once could've had a '66 Polara (which wasn't as high and mighty as this here fancy dancy Monaco) for a daily, but I wasn't brave enough to brave 10 mile per gallon fuel economy... in about 2015. But, I won't make the same mistake twice if I find one of these in my travels again! ^_^

Our 1967 Chrysler with 383 used more gasoline than any car I ever had any experience with. About 8 mpg, 11 highway.

Had one of these in a 4-DR sedan with the 383 2bbl that I drove as a winter beater car in the late 70s/early 80s. Never had a speck of trouble with it. Finally had to junk it, as body was disintegrating around me. I did pull the engine and dropped it in an a farm truck, where it lived for several more years.

The cupholder is on the back of the glove box door. It’s not as effective as the ones we have today, but don’t say it doesn’t have any cupholders!
@new2000car
@new2000car 7 месяцев назад
They were only to be used (the dashboard door cup holders) when the car is parked. I daresay most owners never used them. A stupid feature because we wasted time and thought on it before inevitably concluding that we probably will never use them. A busywork distraction that keeps simpleton’s’ brains engaged.

Don’t forget the coin holder in the ashtray held quarters, nickels and dimes. The ac on these cars was excellent.
@edwinhesse11
@edwinhesse11 7 месяцев назад
@@jw77019 I remember in my dad‘s on hot days back east when it was very humid the mist would pour out of those air conditioning vents on the dashboard. Sometimes it would even ice up the vents. That’s when you knew you were getting really cold air. When it got really super hot, everybody would always ask for the max ac.

I like how it's called the "Monaco" but it's nothing like the Ferrari that somebody who lived in the Monaco in the 1960's might drive (indeed it seems it would be a challenge to navigate the Dodge Monaco around the Casino hairpin)! The American, but coach built in Italy, Apollo GT seems more along those lines. 🙂

You do a great job. Calling this car a personal luxury is more than a bit of hyperbole. The A/C if it came with the car is a major plus. Minus bucket seats, console, power windows ,seats ,brakes, steering and an AM/FM radio it is definitely not a personal luxury car. Even if it had these options it would Never challenge T birds, Rivieras, Lincoln suicide door cars, or even Avantis. I guess I can account this to your youth.
