I bought a 1966 Ford F100 pickup truck and drove it back from VA to MI, come along for the ride and a tour, and give a listen to the dual exhaust coming from that 390FE big block

Very cool trip, you went through West Point on general puller highway. Also across Whitestone bridge, some pucker factor on that bridge on a windy day.

Great looking and a lot of fun to drive with that power steering.

I bought this truck specifically because of the power steering, power brakes, and auto transmission. I can still drive it in 20 years when I'm old and creaky [or at least older and creakier than I already am]

Dude! Unless you're 80 yrs old, there's still time...this F100 only cost me $6k to buy and drive home. I also bought a 1963 Chevy C20 from Colorado for $4k and it is drivable but definitely needs work. There are deals out there if you are patient. I waited 5 yrs from the time I decided this is what I wanted, to the time I actually bought them on Craigslist

That looks like it was a great find. I appreciated you pointing out that you didnt cut the speaker holes in the doors...that always makes me a bit sad as you can only cut them one. However im sure it gave you some decent tunes for the trip! I for one would be intrrested to see an update if you still have her. My 66 is within a month of being on the road and i cannot wait!
@seventeenfeet
@seventeenfeet Год назад
Thanks man, I came up with a good idea for someone else’s speaker holes: cut a rectangular shape which is exactly the same height as the existing speaker holes, and then try to make door pocket inserts out of ABS or similar. Figure out how far the window mechanism comes down, and then slant the pocket down so it does not interfere. If that doesn’t work out, I will probably just buy another set of door panels. The cab is not original, so neither are the doors, so it's all good. I actually didn't listen to music much on the trip because there is an enormous amount of wind noise at 75mph, which I’ve been addressing. And besides, I wanted to listen to the engine and transmission and just get to know the vehicle. Put a link to your '66 video when you get it done!

Higher octane is for higher compression. Not really necessary in an fe

That engine doesn't benefit from high octane. I didn't hear any pinging and it doesn't appear to be down on power.

Nice! I have a 70 with a 390 and also had a 65 with a 390. You can only tell difference between 360 and 390 by measuring the stroke otherwise they’re indistinguishable. Good luck with it 👍🏻

This is a great ride-along video. You brought her back home to Ford country! I have a 1966 f100 4x4 first year of the factory installed 4x4. I’m looking for a new front differential though. The gears and housing are bad so right now it’s a tall 2wd! I was told I have a 390 too but still need to measure to be sure. Either way these are great motors. I have driven 100 miles so far and smiled the whole time. I’m excited to see more updates.

@@MrJhbowman Glad you like the video! I made it in part so that I can learn from other viewers. Got new shocks all around, new carb, lots of exhaust work, new water pump and belts, STILL have not done a tuneup. She runs rough when cold, stalls easily. Now have working heat/defrost, which will come in handy. I'll put her away just before they start salting the roads here in MI this winter. Anything you can point out to an F100 newbie?
@MrJhbowman
@MrJhbowman 3 года назад
@@seventeenfeet Sounds like you are all over the details that will make a great truck! Impressive how well it ran without a tune up. What carb did you put on it? Personally, I have had a 61 short bed unibody - mostly stock, a 63 short bed lowered that was not stock at all, now my 66 4X4 that I am trying to bring back to life. My advice is enjoy the process of making it yours! I will occasionally get frustrated with my progress, but its short lived. I have family in Michigan near Detroit and Kalamzoo, and my daughter goes to school there at Western. I would love to meet up for coffee and compare F-100 notes next time I make the trip from Colorado to MI! Ok, I have a headliner to get installed this weekend, so I'll let you know how that goes. I just bought a 66 F100 myself. I bought mine for $300 because the original engine that's in it is blown and the trans was pulled before I bought it. I have a 78 Buick Century with Turbo charged V6 and 3 speed auto trans that was rear ended in the late 90's that I'm just going to throw in it and daily drive it, Why? Why not? it's free....... besides, when was the last time you saw a 66 F100 with a Buick turbo charged V6 in it?

Eeeesh maybe just skip the premium? I have it on very good advice from a very good mechanic that 87 octane is just fine, he runs it in all his vintage trucks and boats. He also pointed out that yes, ethanol can ruin older rubber hoses / gaskets / etc, but modern replacements are all designed to handle the ethanol. AND if ethanol is ruining anything of yours, it's because that anything is old and should've been replaced long ago anyway 🤷‍♂

yessir, this truck is not original. the vehicle title says standard cab but the previous owner replaced it with a custom cab, the front end is from a '76 model year, which is why this '66 has power steering and power front disc brakes

Sorry but no, this is now my primary work truck. I don't need a truck during the salty Michigan winters, so it is perfect for my needs, which 99% of the time is local driving. However, I just took a trip from Muskegon on the Lake Express across to Milwaukee and drove up to Tomahawk Wisconsin to pick up an order, then came back across to Muskegon and then immediately drove all the way around Chicago and up again to Tomahawk to repair and pick up a trailer we had to leave on the side of the highway. This '66 F100 is earning her keep!! ❤

Because "its there"...sorry I can only say that I bought it that way. My dad's old 1948 Ford convertible had a nearly identical spotlight. I assume older headlights back in the day just did not throw enough light to the side to illuminate house addresses, etc.

@seventeenfeet Год назад
Its a 390, it is not the original engine. Based on my excellent mechanic and his experience with pulling loads, it's most likely correct. Too hard to tell without taking it apart. The cab is also not original. Also, the front end came from a 1976, which made it possible to add power steering and power front disc brakes. This thing just took a trip across Lake MI on the Lake Express with a trailer accompanied by a Transit Connect plus trailer, to pick up a load of trees in Tomahawk WI and back. The trailer on my worker's cargo van failed [I overloaded the trailer] and we had to leave it on the side of the road and finish the trip back across Lake MI and back to my workshop. I then moved all the tools into this truck and drove all the way around Chicago during the night back up to Madison Wisconsin to repair the trailer and pull the whole thing home. This truck is a runner, 390 or not

@seventeenfeet
@seventeenfeet Год назад
@@bobbyheffley4955 yup, as I said, a lot of this truck is not original. But if it DIDN'T have power steering, power disc brakes and auto transmission, I would not have bought it. I got tired of stick shifts decades ago, and with power steering and power brakes, I can physically keep driving this thing into old age, and road trips are much less tiring. I also bought a 1963 C20, but it is almost entirely original, matching numbers, AM only radio, manual everything...it is far more work to drive, and that just gets old after awhile.
