2 little video on Holley Sniper 2g installed in my 1968 CJ5 w/ a 225 oddfire engine Works awesome still trying to dial things in , but works awesome .... Hope to post a video soon of it driving down the road. Hope this helps
I don't think you have the distributor in correct yet, I just went threw installing an HEI and it took forever to get it timed. The vacuum advance should point straight at the radiator with #1 cylinder top dead center on compression stroke rotor pointing at #1 on cap, just left of the battery connection (like you have it). Then move the rotor one tooth to the right and should be good. I needed 30 degrees btdc if I didn't move one tooth, then it was dead on.
So, I just got the Sniper running on my Delorean...which is also an oddfire V6. I think there's a lot of misinformation about the Sniper vs Oddfire...to the extent that Holley techs don't even know. I had Holley techs say that it would work...and I had Holley techs say it wouldn't work. So...I rolled the dice. It >kinda< worked. BUT...not particularly well. What REALLY made it work, was putting together a 3 tooth crank trigger wheel to "fake" and even fire distributor signal. I think the reality of the odd-fire signal is that it's making the Sniper try to jump between 2 different RPMs, really fast, as it gets those oddly spaced pulses. Seeing BJ's Offroad list the Sniper for the Dauntless gave me some (false) confidence that it would work...but I don't think they're really telling the whole story. But, I did also see someone else with a jeep just put 3 bolts in his crank pulley, combined with a crank sensor, to get the Sniper to run well. I know the latest post is a year old...but, I think some solid info needs to get out into the world regarding the Sniper and Odd-fire.
I don't know if there's some sort of "trickery" going on with those HEI 6 cyl odd-fire distributors...since they seem to be a modified 8 cyl....maybe the reluctor is still sending 8 even pulses, maybe 6 even pulses. I called DUI to ask about them...and even they couldn't give me a straight answer. I'd love to see what the underside of the cap, and reluctor look like.
Was seriously considering the Sniper kit until I read it doesn’t work with this distributor or that distributor etc. I kinda just gave up. You’ve given me renewed hope.
Brandon - Best move I ever made for the Jeep. Fires right up, idles great, very responsive don't have to let it warm up like the old 2g ... Fire it up and drive. Makes a world of difference and you get to see the results on the sniper display screen. Super happy let me know if I can help in anyway.. Just for reference I bumped my idle up to 750 and just rotated the distributor around until the motor sounded happy and smooth...... Best of Luck.
WhT model distributor is this? Currently have a 4bbl Offy Intake with a 450 CFM Holley and really hate how I can’t get it to run right. Have points distributor also. Want to change to HEI and go Sniper or FI tech
I had a 67 with the oddfire Buick, high volume oil pump otherwise all stock with the Rochester 2G. Ran much much smoother than that. Have you got it dialed in?
What headers did you use? Starting back up on my ‘52 M38 with a dauntless swap this winder and have the stock headers. Wouldn’t mind swapping to some long tubes.
I use Advance Adapters fender well outlet headers on my 225 odd fire powered Flatfender. Thick flanges, perfect fit, been running them for years problem free.
How is that sniper now that it's been a few months? I have had a 71 since 1996 when I did first frame off restoration on it. Now I'm installing a hei today almost finished with it's second frame off. Is that upgrade worth it? It seems like allot more parts in a almost perfect system stock.
after 3months..... Best upgrade I ever did. - engine fires right up and is running smoother & stronger than ever, no waiting around for it to warm up, turn the key & go, throttle response is way better. nothing wrong with sticking w/ your stock carb setup if that's what you want. But this is what I wanted & I know I'll never have to rebuild my carb again or starve for gas climbing steep hills. One tip is I bumped my idle speed up to 725 - 750 that's the sweet spot for my 225. Best of luck
That engine is running _awfully_ rough. I use a hot rodded (Kenne Bell equipprd, overcarbureted, MSD, headers... ) V6 Odd Fire in a 1946 CJ2a which has the characteristic 'lumpy idle' ( _90 - 150 - 90 - 150 - 90 - 150_ ) for which they are known but it has _never_ run that rough. Yours sounded outright painful in this video, hope you got your ignition timing sorted out.
A-Team Performance HEI Distributor 65K Volt Coil Compatible with Buick Odd Fire 231 3.8L V6 225 Jeep 3.7L Dauntless One Wire Installation Red Cap $119.99
Doing a frame off restomod on my cj2a on my channel and I have already purchased this kit and a DUI distributor for my odd fire. Reading forums all I find is this kit won't work. Obviously you got it working would you be able to go over your wiring in more detail? Considering you have it running smoother now could you do an update video? Thank you for posting this.
just added an updated idle video for ya, The super sniper definitely works great best upgrade I made .... good luck w/ the 2a build. The wiring is pretty straight forward. I just followed the directions. Plug N Play. Shoot me your wiring questions and I'll be glad to try and help.
