Engine turn over turns into major surgery!
We had hoped to get the engine turning over on the key with a little work but investigations reveal more in depth work is needed before this engine will ever run again!
With no engine hoist or block and tackle available it becomes a longer than expected task.

My favorite way to buy cars is fresh from the pasture! I finally bought an fiberoptic camera to look down the cylinder bores (through the spark plug holes) before I even attempt to spray solvent down the cylinders. More often than not there is at least some surface rust on the cylinder walls and it requires tearing down the engine anyway. Sometimes there is an amazing amount of rust, even if the engine was completely closed. The other thing I've run into will be stuck valves, esp. the ones that were left open and the stem rusted. Barring the engine over without checking the valves could force stuck things and you could break the rocker arms. (ask me how I know!) I don't live in the UK but its just about as damp (PNW, US), so I've gotten to the point I just plan on tearing the engine down and disassembling for at least a cleanup, new seals, etc. Even if you were able to get the engine free and even running, you will probably do more damage and could actually ruin a repairable engine. Thanks for the video, I'm about to tear down an MGB for the first time, it really helps to see it done first.

I went through the same issue with that center head stud when removing the head from my MGB. The head stud hole in the head is actually smaller on that stud only. There's no locating dowels on those engines and that smaller hole is how they located the head fore and aft.

Great walk through. Its encouraging to see folks doing what is generally regarded as a "big job" with relative ease, allbeit a fiddly endeavor as you show. I keep meaning to do the same on my 1972 MGB just as a maintenance thing really (as I don't know when the gasket was last changed), but I worry I'll make things worse. I'd love to see the "next weeks video", but I dont see it listed yet. Perhaps you've not had chance to film it.

Thanks very much, unfortunately we have had really poor Internet for a few months and not been able to upload any new videos, we have also sold the mg on since. I do have a little bit more content still to edit and upload and I'm sure it won't be long until we have something else to work on.

Ouch, was the car left outside for extended periods of time?

We think it was left under a car port type shelter, its pretty solid despite its looks, been dripped on for years by condensation
