1968 Toyota Corona Coupe w/ 2000 Miata Engine Swap

I recently finished installing the engine and transmission from a JDM Mazda Miata into my 1968 Toyota Corona RT52 Coupe. I put several hundred miles on the car in the first two weeks after getting it on the road, and it has worked flawlessly. Very smooth and powerful. Great in the city and on the highway. Delighted with the result.
I customized the Miata drivetrain components in four ways:
-Coil on plug (COP): Using coils from a 2003 Honda CBR600 motorcycle and a Bosch 0 227 100 211 igniter from a 2000-2002 VW Golf. The Bosch ignition control wired directly to the engine harness.
-Custom cast coolant housings: I had very little room between the engine and the firewall, so I sand cast a low-profile outlet for the heater hose and coolant temperature sender. While I was at it, I cast a front thermostat housing that points straight up.
-Relocated shift turret: I shortened the shift linkage to move the shifter 4" forward.
-Notched oil pan: I notched the oil pan to clear the steering center link.
I customized the Toyota Corona in four ways:
-Added radiator mounts: Found bolt-on radiator brackets that matched the pins on my aftermarket Honda Civic aluminum radiator and trimmed and welded them to lower radiator brace
-Added engine mounts: I cut away original engine mount pads and fabricated new ones to work with modified versions of the stock Miata engine mounts
-Added in-tank fuel pump: I cut a 2-1/4" hole in the top of the fuel tank and added a late 90s Honda fuel pump assembly with an integral sump tray that I fabricated from sheet metal. Also ran copper fuel supply line, using original Corona fuel line for my return
-Clearanced transmission tunnel: The reverse light switch would not fit without a small pocket. I then covered the small bump-out with a large panel on the tunnel to make carpet install easier.
Here is a page showing the modifications: orange-claw-ham...

Relieved to find your channel. I have been toying with the idea of a Miata vs S2000 engine swap. Miata has proven to be more affordable. Unfortunately, I do not have your mechanical talent but you have explained things well. Please post an update to this video. Maybe showing the car in motion (acceleration, etc). Great job!!

Too bad they've all rusted back to earth here in the Northeast... I had a '69 4 door with a two speed automatic. Good candidate for a swap, but it was 1975 ;)

Very cool car and nice clean swap! About, getting Bosch Igniter and COP coil, is this a Plug-N-Play or any wiring work needed? Thanks!
@jfbrink
@jfbrink 3 года назад
It requires light modification to the Miata harness (splicing the wires for the two coil packs into the input plug for the Igniter) and the bike coil harness (to space the coils properly and splice to the Igniter output plug). If you're comfortable with soldering wire, it's very easy. There is an outfit called Fab9 that sells a PnP version, but I saved $200 making it myself.

Would it be possible to swap a K20/K24 into an RT40? Also, which car's shocks would be a close fit, especially to replace the rear leaf springs. TIA

Nice swap I had one same year and 2 door but I did a 2rz swap out of a Tacoma very fun car..!! Do you still have the drum brakes in the front?
@jfbrink
@jfbrink 3 года назад
Yes, I'm still running drums. I was developing a disc brake swap based on Geo Metro discs, but even with the added HP, I find the stock drums more than sufficient. But, then, I'm not doing track days, just everyday driving.

What type of motor mount and trans mount did you use and did you have to modify crossmember or anything
@jfbrink
@jfbrink 3 года назад
I modified the stock Miata mount brackets so that they would bolt a few inches farther forward on the block, then I welded simple pads to the Corona front crossmember. The stock Miata rubber isolators sit between them. For the transmission, I notched the stock Corona cross bar and added a pad to it for bolting the transmission with old shock isolators as my rubber. I've added a link to the video description that shows photos of the modifications!

What’s the name of radio?
@jfbrink
@jfbrink 3 года назад
It is a no-name radio from eBay. I really like it. One nice feature is that it does not have to be on / playing to answer calls. Just now, I used the following search on eBay to bring it up as the first listing: "car stereo receiver with bluetooth 4x60w car audio fm radio"
