Don Messer's Jubilee (and other names) was a hugely popular TV and road travelling show of Canadian Maritimes music and performers in the 1950s-60s.
In 1969 they did a farewell tour across Canada, recorded on 16mm film. In 1971 the National Film Board of Canada released a 'behind the scenes' of that tour, which I found a copy of in the collection at the Niagara Artists Centre in St Catharines.
Contains a lot of great 'behind the scenes' stories.
In December 2016 I recently transferred to digital some of the many films The Niagara Artists Centre in St. Catharines, Ontario has collected over the years. This is one of the Centre's collection of 16mm films.
Sadly the film colour is totally shifted to red, I did my best to restore it towards the original colour.

Just amazing! My dad told me that, as a three year old, I'd grab my toy fiddle and follow along when Don Messer came on. I still play some of his tunes today!

Awesome, I started fiddling 5 months ago. I'm Métis, self taught, and been trying to find all the old Don Messers Jubille episodes. This is great.

Thank you very much for thanking me : - ) I too felt the same way watching it. I remember the tv show very fondly. Canada could use a show like it again today.

Thanks for posting this, it’s an important heritage documentary. I remember Don Messer’s music from when I lived in Vancouver in the 40s and 50s as a kid. Now back in Scotland and England, but the music stays with me and I’m even learning step dancing. We came back with Whalens Breakdown and Loggers Breakdown on a 78 - still want to to learn to play Whalens on the banjo. I recognised St. Annes Reel - every nation claims that as their own, although the French version has a different B part. Quite rightly, Don didn’t claim it as his. I’m not sure, however, whether the stepping in set dancing is of Irish or Scottish origin or both. The Irish still use stepping in set dances I think, but Scots use setting steps instead - although I’ve seen it suggested that Scots once used stepping as well. There must also be some French settler influence, but I’ve not finished watching. Learning so much, and the heritage is not dead. Even now, Cape Breton step dancers come over to Scotland to help the Scots revive their old time step dancing tradition. And the Rankin family helped by coming over as well - the girls were good dancers, and the music was great.

Wonderful post Brian, thank you. Our 41 yr old son is "Bryan" :-) Yea it was a bitch to improve the colour on that film. I absolutely loved getting to digitize that film. I loved the tv show, the music, the people, I wish we had a show like it today. I used to pretend to play 5-string banjo, took lessons 1962-4, my teacher was 96 yr old Bill Miles who used to conduct his 100 players banjo and ukulele bands at the Canadian National Exhibition every year way way back, he had such magical stories of his life experiences. My wife and I did the Cape Breton drive 2011, during the Celtic Festival, but missed almost all the events, they'd moved 'inland' by then, so we never saw what I'd hoped to experience on that score, except the night before the drive, in Sydney, we were evening strolling beside the harbour, and there was a concert on in that place with the big fiddle outside, and we got to experience the music. We have a touch of the Scot in us, great something grandmother was a 4th cousin of Sir John, and a lot of Irish. And our son's Newfie best friend's wife is Scot, they and her parents live here in St Catharines, her fantastic parents do love their drink. Long time since they came over from Scotland but maybe you knew them way back when - John and Gena McCormick - LOL - just kidding about asking. In 2003 my wife and I and son did a weekend lightspeed to Paris and Versailles, the Chunnel to London and train to Aylesbury, then back home. So, at least we did that much visit of "the old sod". Anyways, thanks again for posting, very happy to know you enjoyed it so much.

Just learned for the first time about Messer on J.P. Cormier's channel (I'm a US musician); amazing musician and the Islanders were terrific. So pleased to discover this stuff!

I notice there is another RU-vid version of this film under the name “Don Messers Jubilee Documentary” - probably the overdone red one you mention, and it also has a 1 hour over run. Thanks for correcting the colour.

it's interesting how much stronger the Martime accent was then. I fear we're losing it now with all the mass media making us sound like middle-of-the-road North American.

Agreed, tragic loss of a lot. Canada is 99 percent "Americanized" now, and even Canada too will be gone soon.

Holy doodle, such a question ! I don't know. But I did find the following on the Canadian Encyclopedia website "Regular performers included the Buchta Dancers - a troupe of ballroom, folk and square dancers led by Gunter and Irma Buchta"
