It cannot be overstated as to how important these AMC Javelins are in the history of American car racing. It is astounding how AMC came essentially out of nowhere to be as competitive as they were. Long live AMC muscle!💪

Did the 68 Javelin have the raised hood for the cowl induction?
@loucostabile
@loucostabile 3 года назад
Hi mojoe wood, Hmmm, not sure. Hoping a Viewer can share your answer, Lou
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 3 года назад
No. Towards the end of the 68 season the Javelins finally got a cowl induction setup drawing through the air intake for the cabin air ventilating system. In 69 there was a dealer option bubble for the hood. 70 had the hood scoop you see here. 71 through 74 they had a cowl induction system similiar to the 69 Camaro. Engine wise the 68 and 69 had 290 CID V-8s bored .108" over to bring them up to 304 CID. The factory 304 was never used in TransAm racing. In 70 the SCCA allowed larger engines to be destroked to meet the displacement limit. AMC used a destroked 360. Plymouth and Dodge used destroked 340s. Prior to 1970 teams were allowed to use dual quads. From 70 on they were limited to a single 4 barrel. Ford designed a single row 4 barrel carb that looked like a 4 barrel Webber. SCCA said sorry but no. The carbs throat spacing matched the ports spacing on the Boss 302.

Engine specs? AMC 304 cid Raised Deck Gen 3 engine. SCCA rules meant the cars had to be 5L of displacement of course they didn't use the metric system much in those days.

@@dj4monie the Pace Cars had a 390 W/Cross Ram Intake, Dual 650 cfm ,2 Barrells .I believe,Not Sure that That is a Cross Ram Intake,But One Prob.Biggest Holly of that day,Would think 850 or 950 cfm.
@ramblerdave1339
@ramblerdave1339 6 месяцев назад
5:35 These cars never used the 304 block. They used a 290 block, cast with the 4 bolt main bottom nd from the 390 engine, with forged 290 crank, bored to 3.842". 343ci heads, 2.025 intake, l.625 exhaust valve, 10:1 forged aluminum pistons, and forged steel Rods. In 1970, they were allowed to use the 360 block, with Forged Moldex cranks, to achieve the 304 ci. That what your looking for? If you want more, it's all in a book, called "The History of AMC Motorsports" by Bob McClurg, published in 2016.

The wheels are American racing Minilites That was the wheel of choice on all the 70 Factory T/A cars. The AMCs ran Goodyear and other teams ran Firestone. Parnelli Jones ran Firestone as he was a Firestone dealer.

@ramblerdave1339
@ramblerdave1339 6 месяцев назад
During the '68 season, Ron Kaplan Engineering (RKE), who built the cars, decided the lack of anti-dive geometry in the stock suspension,had to be corrected, and after looking at competitors suspension, decided the Mustang suspension had the correct anti dive, and AMC had a new inner fender stamped, with the Mustang mounting points, and got them and the rest of the necessary parts homoligated with AMC part numbers, for the '69 season. The same for the Lincoln style brake calipers that the Mustangs were using, from Kelsey-Hayes.

More like 480, yes, those that were required to be, were designed and homoligated, with AMC part numbers, and given over the counter, dealer install designation. Edelbrock supplied the AMC part numbered intake manifolds.

Why haven't you repaired the windshield! Lame it seems not many people know about these two years and this particular model car, they made 54 models of this car and made them available to the public it was because they were trying to get a 10 second car and nobody could do it because the cars where 4700 pounds so amc decided to build a big block engine included into a midsize car specifically to run 10 seconds in the quarter mile with slicks it came with two cams you put the second one in after delivery these 54 cars where the fastest muscle cars that it ever been built at the time they're super rare and not many people know about them there are also red white and blue most of them got wrecked. But gary clark in auburn california who is sick now has one and has owned it for quite awhile so the in alaska and then we bought it again it was a piece that needed to be completely rebuilt , These are some of the rarest cars that are out on the market and the most misunderstood and least knowledge is out there about this cars. So much so that these two guys that are talking about this card don't even know that this one exist. Why is it that me a nobody knows about this car and these guys are supposed to know everything about cars don't know anything about it.

Not sure were you got your weight info from but I bought a new Rebal Machine in 1970 and the curb weight on it was approx. 3500 lbs and it was heavier than the Javelin for that year by 300 lbs. To my knowledge they never built a car that heavy.That car also had the highest HP of any factory engine AMC ever produced at 390ci with 340hp. and 10-1 compression. That engine was produced for that car and that year only. They did produce other 390ci but with less HP. Even the big block 401 had less factory HP.

The backup lights are in the taillamp assembly, but the bulbs, switch, and wiring probably removed to save weight. These cars were built from bare body shells, selected off the assembly line before being dipped in the rust preventative vat, and were followed down the line before that, to keep unnecessary brackets and such, from being welded on. Most of the privateers probably bought complete cars from the dealer, but factory entrants were typically built from body shells up, instead of removing unneeded parts, to convert to race cars. On these cars, about 400 lbs, would be removed, to get to the 2800 lb. minimum weight.

1970 rule book states the headlights, parking lights and side marker lights must be removed and holes completely covered. Taillights are left intact. Watch some old T/A videos and you'll see that the rear lights, including the back up lights, are intact. You might be thinking NASCAR, where all lights were removed and only added for the Paul Revere 250, midnight race. Look up "1970 Trans Am rulebook" and give it a read. Have fun!
