1969 Chevrolet COPO Camaro ZL1 427 vs 1971 Plymouth Duster 340. Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race (FAST factory stock)
First car is a 1969 Chevy COPO Camaro ZL1 with a 427 V8, and the other is a 1971 Plymouth Duster 340 with a 340 V8. The ZL1 Camaro has a 4-speed manual, while the Duster 340 has a 727 3-speed automatic. The ZL1 still retains the factory 4.10 gear set, but the Duster 340 has been upgraded to a 4.30 set. Their weight is somewhat similar, make sure to watch the video for more details. It is of note that the COPO is in fact a real deal #9561 car that came from the factory with an all iron 427 rated 425 horsepower (450 by the NHRA), but the owner wanted to preserve the numbers matching engine so it was pulled. In its place is an engine from a COPO order #9560 car...that being an all aluminum ZL1 engine rated, "430 horsepower," but true output is likely over 500 horsepower. However, tires are a limiting factor, and horsepower/torque only matter if you can get it to the pavement. The Duster's 340 was rated 275 horsepower, but probably made more along the lines of 300. However, this specific Duster 340 is an all out Pure Stock build (note the heater hose delete), and I suspect it's truly making in upwards of 400 net horsepower. Both great cars!
Remember, both cars participate in the Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race series, so please check out their website: www.psmcdr.com
Also make sure you find them out on Facebook.

As the driver of the Camaro, let me say that Paul in the Duster, is a class act and his car is very well sorted out for Pure Stock racing. At 72 years young I am just having fun and enjoying life. I didn't build my Camaro from the ground up to be a Pure Stock 'top dog' - I don't race regularly - in fact I only race once a year at this event. 4-speed cars are overall not as fast as the automatics and my car is a 4-speed. I am number 11 on the all time fastest list, but maybe not on the most consistent list. There were 3 4-speed cars in the top 20 cars this year. Then the ZL-1 has a double-pumper carb, all the others have vacuum secondary carbs - and yes contestants use that to 'tune' their cars launch - my right foot is the only tune for my secondaries. One of the contestants told me his car picked up 6 tens of a second going to an automatic transmission, but I will just stay with the 4-speed as for now I just play around once a year. I'm not a drag racer, never was a drag racer, but I invite all of you to come try it. Put 500 lb/ft of torque to the ground on F70-14 tires with 4.10 gears and a 4-speed and a double pumper carb. It ain't all that easy when you only do it once a year. Congratulation again to Paul in the Duster - lots of the racers respect him and his abilities.

@@craigewen2878 ; I'm sure that most of us gear heads are well aware of the the COPO potential. The point being, a COPO is not "pure stock". That's like saying a 427 Thunderbolt is "pure stock". Being a Ford fan, I would argue that a BOSS 429 isn't "pure stock". But people could buy a Boss 429 off a showroom floor for $3,000 less than a COPO. Not sneaking around corporate rules and such non sense. Maybe Andy/Tom brought this COPO for just show-n-go. My hats off to him. But for that reason, he should just take it to parades. But in typical fashion, the rule's of the game are twisted in favor of Chevy Butthead.

I actually owned a 71 Duster exactly like the one in this race except mine had Cragars on it. I had a sticker in my dash that said "you spin I win." Buddy of mine in high school had a Demon 340-- his dad had a shop and was a Mopar maniac, and they had it stock aside from modern tires, think they slightly widened stock rims. However, the engine was lovingly blueprinted, stock technically but all the factory mess ups erased (casting flash in the ports smoothed, that sort of thing). Dang thing was FAST for a high school car in 1995, power delivery was amazing, like getting pulled by a giant rubber band or something. Ran consistent low 13's, think he got a few 12.90's on good days. Every now and then someone else at school would try to race him and it always ended up a slaughter.

LOL I understand the rules involved....I ran my '69 AMX 390 4 spd in NMCA TOP Stock back in the 90's to low 11 ETs taking advantage of anything/everything the rules allowed......The "ringer" moniker i gave the Duster is because the owner obviously took advantage of every performance enhancer allowed, while the COPO Camaro owner IMO did not....as I said in my previous post above the trap speeds of near 115 mph on 2 passes shows the COPO was having traction problems (in both lanes)....a simple tire change and/or dialing in the psi would've made the difference here.....the Duster's owner probably had the right tires and psi set, forward clamps on the rear leaf springs, adjustable pinion snubber, 50/50 rear shocks, 80/20 front shocks, 6 cylinder front springs, etc....all within the rules and took advantage of each and every one of them.....no "stock" Duster 340 runs 12.2's LOL....the COPO in this video qualified at 12.37 so again tires/psi dialed in the COPO wins...no bias here, I love the Duster 340 and I'm an AMC owner so I'm all for the underdogs....but facts are facts....Happy Thanksgiving! 🦃

@@FIRE-WOOD Scott Smith is correct they both are on the same playing field. The COPO owner changed out his iron 427 for the lighter and higher HP ZL1. It sounds like you've never been to this event or even know the rules ? They both run the same tires, all cars run reproduction bias ply tires, this is the best tire wit hthe best traction qualities , these aren't like the original slippery tires back in the day, with a MAX width depending on the series ie: 60 or 70 series , G in the 70 series and also I think it's G in the 60 ... same size on all 4 corners except for cars that came that way from the factory and I'm 99.9% sure that is only the AAR Cuda and T/A Challenger. They set the tire pressure in the rear to get maximum tread contact on the ground and overinflated the fronts some for less tread contact. The COPO had 2 disadvantages , one was the Dusters owner , as soon as I heard the name I knew the Duster was going to be fast, and the second was the owners choice of a 4 speed transmission. I raced this event in 2006 , hope to get back there in 2021 with my 383 4 speed Dart GTS . Happy Thanksgiving!

You mentioned the track test of the ZL1 back in 1969: Then Editor of Hot Rod Magazine, Ro McGonegal, featured a story on the 1969 test in a June 1998 issue. According to Ro, the test was conducted at the Kansas City International Raceway, on what appeared to be a cold off-season day as indicated by the gray skies, bare trees, coats and hats. He stated the ZL1 with headers pumped out 575 hp (vs its factory rating of 430hp). They tried 8" slicks and destroyed them with a best time of 11.64. Furthermore, the car had the TH400 which had a very incompatible factory stall converter, so they even had to resort to "mat the throttle with the transmission in Neutral and then yank the lever into Low" which made things real squirrely. According to Ro, the Chevy press introduced a ZL1-powered corvette later that year with 10" slicks and belted out 10.70 "all day long with idiots at the wheel!"

I really miss being a member of the local Mopar Club back in the mid-90's. My friends in the club turned me on to a 1-owner '76 Feather Duster. $250. The owner didn't think it would move under its own power. After checking the fluids, hoses, and belt, I slapped a new battery in it and drove it home (about 12 miles). The only mishap was a giant clump of pine straw and other unknown debris that decided to vacate the vent box and hit me in the face while on I-20. I had the window down, and it exited to whatever fate awaited. Maybe one day I'll own another...

I need an explanation on how a 'stock 340' is running low 12's - that's as fast or faster than a Hemi. What am I missing? Detroit Horsepower outputs peaked in 1970 - adding to my confusion on how a '71 - an even lesser 'stock 340' - is flirting with 11 second quarter times. If the camaro had any traction it could hit 11's - it's also easily pushing 500hp - no chance that 340 comes stock with 500hp.

Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge did all the work. I used to sidestep the clutch at 4,000rpm at launch. It was a very fast car. It would just plant the tires and go like the Duster in the vid. Secondaries were locked out until motor was at operating temp w. the Thermoquad. I used to bring it around cold, find a race and let the guy drive mine first saying "Mine's really fast, drive it first and see if you still want to race." @burningblue1254
@burningblue1254 3 года назад
I totally agree. I love these cars and these races but a little rationale here. In my experience, there is no possibility of getting a Duster 340 AT to run 12.26 within these rules. Seriously folks, read the rules. You could get some incremental HP with a blue print and balance, the overbore, some ignition and carburetor work, a port and polish of the heads. But nothing that will get you anything close to a 12.26 especially on those tires. Do they do any teardowns? I think not. I had a 70 Duster 340, 4 spd, 3.91 gears. No spare or jack in the trunk, no wipers, not even a radio, no ww fluid, lightest battery that could start it. Could barely crack a 14.5. Bone stock on the E70's with a factory supplied i.e. "hand built" engine for magazine testing i.e. Hot Rod Magazine or such and a supertune with Ronnie Sox on the 4 speed with a soft launch you might get a 14.2 at sea level, cool air. A 12.26 ? With the 3 speed torqueflite? No chance. I have listened to some of these cars at idle or slowly moving through the pits, doesn't sound like a factory cam to me.

As far as an electronic ignition it's either a pertronics type or a factory type box, no MSD or the like is allowed, those cars that have a dual point actually run them as they are better than the electronic ignition you are allowed to use. Cams must the actual advertised lift of the original factory cam. The temperature tells me this may have not been the September race and actually one that was ran in the spring, the air was very good that day. The reproduction bias ply tires they run have a naturally sticky compound as they are made , that's why you don't see anyone but the casual or first time racer at this event running radial tires. I think the F70-14 redlines I have ran me about $500, back in 2006, when I bought a set to race there .

Both nice car's, but the Duster get's to me. Back in 1972 my older brother bought a new bright yellow 340 Duster. Loved that car and miss it. In 1976 he went on a German car kick and traded the Duster for a new BMW 2002...What a mistake.

The owner of the Duster really has that car set up. Well done. When reading the rule book it’s just as, if not more important to read what the rules DON’T say vs what they DO say. 😉

1/29/2024: Too cold for good traction. On a warm day, the Duster may have gotten "Dusted". But a great car and the 340 was an excellent engine in 1971. The "New Generation" of High Horsepower cars, with the Fat Summer tires don't do well at all in the traction department in cool/cold temperatures. My 2004 Z06 Corvette only likes Warm/Hot asphalt. As always, Keep up the Great Videos, I like the temperature and humidity notations. Best Regards.

The automatic and upgraded gearing helped the duster win, if these cars were racing further the camaro would have caught and passed it every-time

The guy in the Duster had it set up right and knew how to drive and it was tuned right. That ZL1 should have totally smoked the 340.

How come every car that races in these events is always perfect shape? Not allowed to have a dent or bubble in paint? For rich guys only?
@CarsAndZebras

They do have a standard for original detail. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but they are strict on factory appearance.
