The original Dodge Super Bee was based on the Dodge Coronet two-door coupe, and was produced from 1968 until 1970.[5] It was Dodge's low-priced powerful muscle car and a rebadged version of the Plymouth Road Runner. The origin of the name, "Super Bee", has its basis in the "B" Body designation pertinent to Chrysler's mid-sized cars, including the Road Runner and Charger.[6]
Plymouth's Road Runner sales were enough to have Dodge Division General Manager, Robert McCurry, request a similar model from the Dodge Styling office. Senior designer, Harvey J. Winn, won a "contest" with the name "Super Bee" and a new logo design based on the Dodge "Scat Pack" Bee medallion.[7] The design of the first Super Bee was influenced by the 1968 Coronet convertible and the show car's interior was built by the Alexander Brothers. The show car was introduced at the 1968 Detroit Auto Show.[8]
Although the two cars are similar in external appearance, the Super Bee was slightly heavier (approx. 65 lb (29 kg)) and rode on a 117-inch (3,000 mm) wheelbase compared to the Road Runner's 116 in (2,900 mm) wheelbase.[9][10] In addition to minor external differences, such as larger rear wheel openings, the bumblebee tailstripe and fancier grille, and the taillight ornamentation, the Super Bee also used actual diecast chrome-plated "Bee" medallions.
The Super Bee was available with the Hemi engine.[13] This option raised the price by 33%, and only 125 were sold. The 1968 model was only sold as a two-door coupe, with two engine options, the base 335 hp (250 kW) 383 Magnum, and the 426 Hemi, rated at 425 hp (317 kW).[6]
The Super Bee included a heavy-duty suspension, an optional Mopar A833 4-speed manual transmission, and high-performance tires.[14] Outside, a stripe (with the bee logo) was wrapped around the tail.
A "six-pack" (three two-barrel Holley carburetors) version of Dodge's 440 cu in (7.2 L) engine was added to the offering list mid-year rated at 390 bhp (395 PS; 291 kW) @ 4700 rpm and 490 lb⋅ft (664 N⋅m) @ 3600 rpm of torque.[17][18] The option code for this was A12, which changed the 5th digit of the VIN to M. These special order 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees are known as A12 M-code cars. The A12 package also equipped the cars with a Dana 60 axle with a 4:10 gear-ratio, heavy duty automatic transmission or a 4-speed manual, and a 'lift off' flat black scooped hood. Other components to the A12 package included heavy duty internal engine parts, black steel rims with high performance G-70 15" tires, and heavy duty 11" drum brakes. Only 1,907 A12 M-code 440 Six Pack 1969 1/2 Dodge Super Bees were produced. This option fell half-way between the standard engine and the Hemi as a USD463 option. The 1969 model year included the base 383 Magnum, 440 Six Pack, and the 426 Hemi. The 440 Magnum (4bbl) was reserved for the Coronet R/T.
For the 1970 model, the Super Bee received a redesign and a new front-end that consisted of a twin-looped front bumper that Dodge Public Relations referred to as "bumble bee wings".[19] Sales fell for the year from 15,506 in 1970 to 5,054 in 1971-because of, or in spite of, this new look, with another sales pressure coming from higher insurance rates for performance cars; the similar Plymouth Road Runner and Plymouth Duster both experienced similar sales issues.[20] In addition to the new looks, engine choices and "ramcharger" hood carried over from 1969, the 1970 cars from Dodge featured several new or improved options. For example, a "C- stripe" variant of the bumble stripe was offered, in addition to new high-back bucket seats, a steering column-mounted ignition and a "pistol grip" Hurst shifter on four-speed models.

I honestly think you had started the spray can movement about 2 years ago. What I mean by that is you proved to a ton of builders that you can use common spray paints instead of the air brush and still have an amazing looking paint job. I'm 1 of those who didn't put much stock in rattle can paint jobs because I was brought up on the air brush. Thank you for showing some of us older and newer modelers that you don't need to spend a ton of money to make a beautiful and very presentable build. Much respect for you and a very loyal fan.

I built this kit back in about 1984. The version I had had the body molded in the dark blue metallic and it came with a special wax that you applied to give it a deep shine. As I recall, it was labeled as a turtle wax product. A great looking model.

I built that same car model back in the 1990s. It was the one by Monogram that was molded in a blue metallic plastic. I took the Testors silver metallic and gloss blue paint and mixed up my own blue metallic paint for the body color. It looked close to the B5 blue that they used in the factory. It was a nice looking car when I was done.

I had the the molded in blue metalflake version of this kit that I build when I was about 13 yrs old. I used testors sapphire blue spray bombs. This is a very easy kit and those who hate on it can go suck lemons. The new tires with this kit are alot better than the first version I had. And indeed, I truly enjoy my purchase. This kit is EASY. The exhaust manifolds are easy if you rubber band the engine to the chassis then make sure you have em angled out so they line up. This is EASY cause you can actually snap the exhaust pipes/ rear springs and axle in to verify it. Just how I did mine. Y'all are missing out on a very cool kit if you don't like it's scale. It would be a great father/daughter build...it fits nice.

I had the 80s issue of this kit with the body molded in metallic blue and it had a little tear open packet of turtle wax included. It was a very cool kit that goes together extremely easy. I think they may have added a hood and a supercharger to this newer issue as well as more decals. .I need to get me one of these! I used testors sapphire blue metallic on mine and used the white rear super bee stripes. It turned out AWESOME! Great parent child project. The level of detail is excellent, don't let the fact it doesn't have a high parts count fool you! Keep building your way!! .

This was actually my first glue kit (the first I have any memory of anyways)....in the early-mid 80's, it was molded in that cool dark blue metallic, I remember my dad helped a bit (at 47 now, I was 10-12 then), LOL, so when I saw this as "coming soon" on Model Roundup I pre-ordered a couple 😁 Great build, Chris (and I appreciate the trip down memory lane it brought me on), looks great and I love your color choices 😊✌

I have one quite like this, molded in blue gray. Gorgeous! One question, please: When you applied the white stripe in back, was there an open space on the decal where it goes over the side reflector? I remember one of your videos where you had a problem with that. Thanks! Wisconsin native here.

had some old kits laying around and a old tube of testors cement so I used that much as I could but it was toast! so went to hobby lobby looking for tamiya cement and they had nothing! went next door to harbor freight to check thier glues out and found a 3 pack on slow CA. $1.80 that did the trick! worked great and parts were easily attached in seconds w/o waiting for things to dry... something else that works for drag/show cars is spray windows with transparent blue which gives a stealth appearance.......... nice job on the B!!

Great job Chris! I'm glad they added shocks. I don't believe these were included in the original issue of the kit. The decals look much better too. Much more opaque. Nice. And love the satin look of the hood. I originally built this kit back in the 80's, right after it came out. Looks like I have to build it again! My best friend's first car was a 1969 Coronet 440...in 1982, and not a Super Bee. He only had the car about 6-8 months before he wrecked it. Even before then, it was in really bad shape; the brakes were incredibly soft and there were serious rust holes in the body; it's a wonder it survived long enough to be wrecked. BTW, when my friend wrecked it, the only damage was to the car and he walked away without a scratch. Great build Chris, if my friend's only looked like that.

I have the original in that stupid blue metalfkake....wish Revell could have sharpened this one up like they did with the newer Cuda kits.....oh well, still a pretty TIGHT kit Glad to see at least they put in better tires and decals.......

@@hpiguy I do. Just make sure the paint is dry before putting on that polish or it cracks as I found out. But I can fix it.

I never had much luck with Rust Oleum paint. Never seams to dry. How long do you let it dry, sand you sand it to smooth out the paint?? Thank you sir.

Sharp looking muscle car model, I like the tall tires on it..i've got a revell 2 n 1 model kit of a 1968 Dodge Charger R/T and the back wheels sit in under the wheel openings to far, why is that? But on the Super Bee you just built they don't do that and I like that on the Super Bee😊😊😊👍👍👍
