The SR-71 looks like something that could be unveiled tomorrow as a next generation fighter. But it was flying in the 60s. Absolutely incredible.

Superb Build - Great video. Without the BlackBirds - world policies and relations would be so different now. The SR-71A BlackBirds are still futuristic looking. If someone who didn't know anything about military planes and was just showed a pucture of the BlakBirds - they would never believe they were designed in the 50's and entered service in the mid 60's.

Used to build so many of these models back when I was 13/14, won quite a few local/regional competitions in the Junior category. I actually gave away all my modelling stuff to the local club I belonged to (airbrush, paints, haul of unbuilt kits I’d stocked up over the years). This videos made me want to go out and buy it all again haha, I’m 21 now I wonder if I still have it!

I am grateful for your “old school building.” Personally I prefer building kits without having to purchase eleventy-billion after market parts - instead you scratch built very well & made it look great. I intend to build mine by incorporating several of your ideas - thank you for sharing & keeping it “old school” & doable on a limited budget. Keep up the great work !

It's interesting how much the industry has advanced with 3rd party add ons and replacements. But I'm cheap and have a hard time spending money for add ons/replacement parts that can total up to and more than the cost of the original kit. On the other hand none of my builds will ever be mistaken for historically accurate museum pieces either....LOL...

Just an amazing straight out of the box build.......with an amazing ability to properly apply the right amount of wear & weather. You have certainly done your research, and applied what you have seen..... Your attention to detail is second to none, what we lose in these vids is the total time taken, and the drying time for sure. A great build, one of the very best I have seen on YT. BRAVO!

As a huge fan and SR-71 “aficionado” and long time builder, I have to say that overall that’s a really nice build. But it seems you somewhat dropped the ball on your research and some of your colors are a little off if you’re striving for accuracy. I won’t nitpick too much, but the biggest mistake was on the landing gear, despite your efforts to add details. The struts should actually be a very dark matte charcoal, almost black, and the exposed part of the suspension and retraction struts that would be very shiny chrome-like color on most planes is actually a matte silver. Also, the main mount tires are impregnated with aluminum and are in fact silver in color except where the tread has worn. Lastly, the circular blast shield in the main wells that the wheels retract into is painted red on the outer surface. Like I said, I’m a huge fan of the Blackbird and I’ve built several as well as a YF-12 and have several books on this bird, and I’ve also gotten “behind the ropes” and up close to the one locally at March Field Museum, so I’m probably just being overly critical. Good job though.

This kit may be based on new molds, but I am disappointed by the lack of detail in the undercarriage bays and cockpit. The cockpit doesn't expose much detail with the canopy closed, but if the lids are left open, Revell's weakness is apparent. I liked the tone of the outer skin, but you added a little too much dust for my taste. I have seen 3 retired SR 71's, and my written resources describe how these planes were pretty well taken care of. Regardless of these topics, I enjoyed the video. I plan to review your painting techniques, and use some of them, when I tackle the 1/72 scale kit I have.

Just a tip: For applying liquid cement I've been using Touch-N-Flow applicator available from Micro-Mark (U.S.) and elsewhere. This is a pipette with a VERY small stainless tube at the end. You just need to be careful to avoid clogging the tiny tube. Deluxe Materials (U.K.) has a similar product called "Pin Flow Applicator". You may have used some liquid cement bottles with a stainless tube already on it. Those tubes are huge (too huge for delicate work) compared to the Touch-N-Flow or Pin Flow Applicator. Another tip: I don't fill it per the instructions. Instead, I temporariy push on a piece of airplane fuel tubing with a squeeze bulb on the end of the glass pipette to "suck" the liquid up through the stainless tube into it. I find it much faster. How cementing works with this is that you just touch it to a seam or joint and the cement wicks in by capillary action as needed. Due to the small size, you have excellent control, and it is impossible to have cement come out quickly. (Note: Only useful for liquid plastic cements, cannot be used with CA or epoxies.)
@DarkSideModeler
@DarkSideModeler Год назад
Thank you very much for your recommandation ! To be tested and used.
@trainliker100
@trainliker100 Год назад
@@DarkSideModeler You do have to try hard to keep stuff from getting in the open end of the glass tube. Workbenches tend to have a lot of dust and debris and if it gets inside the pipette and starts floating in the cement, it can block the tube from the inside. Also, it's hard to find something like a brass rod small enough to fit into the tiny tube if you need to clear it. I take one strand of stranded electrical wire and it is small enough although not very stiff. And one last thing - don't let it roll off onto the floor because it can break fairly easily. I know from experience, and actually always keep an extra as a spare.

Awesome build! Just got the model after seeing a blackbird in the USAF museum in Ohio. I don't have any experience with making model kits, but always dreamed of doing one. Do you think it's possible for me to do this model successfully? Was looking for equipment recommendations and tips.. Thanks!

One thing you won't see in the museum is the shiny areas on the bottom from fuel leakage. I am fairly certain most of them are probably dry on the bottom, now. Been going on 34 years since most of them were parked at the museums.

Heh. I attempted to build the Estes model rocket of this plane, back in my youth.... What an absolute piece of crap that was, and it just made me want to some day do a proper kit like the one here in this video.

i would expect better interior and exterior details for a new mold kit of that price.

I'm close to finishing mine - agree - the interior will benefit from some of those 3D upgrades, and the undercarriage is very average - But the rest is spot on (base on my references), and while the instructions are crap, it's a quite easy build...

Great build there, but I've got a stupid question there seems to be two Revell SR-71s on the market now, Revell Germany, and a Revell-Mongram USA, which kit did you build.

@@DarkSideModeler Thanks - wish someone would do a side by side comparison of the Revell Germany kit and the US - Revell Monogram. from just seeing the boxes it appears the US-Revelle kit doesn't have the separate engines on a cart. Oh well I'll keep watching for the reviews. and builds...thanks again and like I said you did a great job on the Blackbird.

At 03:00 and 03:07 … why does the paint have a ‘mottled’ look to it? Is this how the actual plane looks, or is this how the spray ends up? I’m just starting to get back into modeling after 30 years, and will start using an airbrush.
@DarkSideModeler
@DarkSideModeler 2 года назад
In fact, on my reference it is generaly really smooth but I found few where it looks like galvanized but maybe it is a post treatment for museum... I choose this version to have a better visual effect after weathering.

This is a really beautiful model. One question: How do you feel about the kit not including the pilot and co-pilot? I haven't built anything like this in many years. Was hoping people would be included. Thanks for any thoughts you care to offer. (Maybe all kits are like this these days?)
@DarkSideModeler
@DarkSideModeler 2 года назад
Many thanks for your comment ! This kit is very interesting but I think the missing of the pilot and co-pilot is an error from Revell. Usualy I don't like to place a pilote in my models but in this case it is a bit diffrent because the crew of this plane is particular. The wears of the cew is like astronauts and it could be very interesting to show it in this model. But I sur that we could find it on the after market soon.

do you think the initial pre shade survived the black on top of it and the pre-shade that came after (with that masking thingy)? also, at 18:20, is the brush soaked with enamel thinner?

Unfortunately the quality of my camera is not so good to show the complete effect on the black because it is very discreet. Sorry for that. Yes I used enamel for the blending
