This happened a lot back then because of gas shortages and the cost of fuel versus fuel mileage. The nation was pushing the small engine, reduced horsepower and mandated 55 speed limits. You could pick up muscle cars back then for $800 or less as owners just parked the "Gas guzzlers" in driveways, yards and garages. Friend of mine bought a 1970 454 SS cowl induction Chevelle for the $800 price in high school.

I was there. I saw the first "gas crisis" as a teenager; I "participated" in the second as a young driver. That doesn't begin to answer my question, though. There have been decades pass since then, after all - decades that have seen values on such cars climb to the point that you'd literally have to live under a rock not to know what they're worth at some point during the following 40+ years. Beyond that, even if you had no interest in values of things and weren't interested in ever selling, as an owner you'd want to at least keep such a car at least functional - and more likely, you'd want to fix it up at some point out of whatever love you felt for it that kept you from letting it go. The mentality of keeping something just for the sake of keeping it, not caring how much it deteriorated or whether it just was functional as is - that mentality is what I'm just not understanding. It's theirs, they own it sure - doesn't mean it makes sense to let it rot, whether it's a car or something else.

@@moparedtn Sure I get you, but peoples life situations dictate what is more important and what isn't. Such as my Pops 1937 Cord Phaeton that sat in his garage and only was driven a handful of times after all of us kids came along. It was his dream car but it had to take a backseat after he got out of Navy, began a family and started a business.

@@Wooley689 We've all been there (wow, a Cord!) as we age, sure - but at some point, as good *stewards* of special cars, we sometimes have to do the hardest thing, which is to get the car to someone who will look after it better than ourselves. All I'm saying.

@@moparedtn I agree on that. Yep, a 1937 Cord convertible which came with a supercharged Lycoming V8. I have a newspaper article with photo of him with it in his Uniform back in the 1950's. He was a proud Aviator.

That's incorrect, I know of plenty, like the AAR a few videos back that do get them going again.

Mine runs it has sat in garage like 25 years and did not allow spouse to drive it. So 42,000 on Odometer. Drove it to other house yesterday. Had to replace brake lines, fuel pump and fuel line from tank tho.
