As we continue our look back at that very important 1970-1971 television season, we reach February 2021, and we'll spend this month looking back at the variety shows of that season. There was growing diversity in that genre as well as the 1970s started, and we'll be paying tribute to a number of these variety shows, as well as a special mid-month surprise as we induct another member into our Television Vanguard Hall of Fame.
First up... perhaps the granddaddy of all television variety shows.. The Ed Sullivan Show. The Sullivan Show ran a remarkable 23 seasons on CBS Sunday nights. It started out as 'Toast of the Town' from June 20, 1948 to September 18, 1955. It then became The Ed Sullivan Show, running from September 25, 1955 to June 6, 1971.
There was a sea change coming onto the television landscape in the early 1970s, and it was an 'changing of the guard' moment in television history, particularly this 1971 time frame as the broadcast networks began to 'turn the page' and cancel many of their older series, including The Ed Sullivan Show. We'll have much more on this topic in March.
