CherryCyanideHD my brother had a 1972 Plymouth Cud’a 340 c.i. in 1975 and our cousin had a 1970 Chevelle SS 396. They raced for about a quarter of a mile or a little over and the Cud’a 340 beat the Chevelle SS 396 by 3 car links.
@@Ekstasii Even my buddies 70 sport fury 383 2 barrel? Eh nail it at 35-40 in 1st and it would rise that big heavy front end decently. It had to have some low number rear gears , i think it did about 50-55 in 1st.
I was at a Caffeine & Octane yesterday and there was a '70 Nova 396/375 , 4sp with 15K MILES - family car. The guy's uncle bought it new, he died and it was store in the grandmother's barn for years. He wasn't sure of the rear end ratio, "pretty low, rpm 4K at 70". Had a book with window sticker and best of all the speeding tickets his uncle had gotten when driving the car. Absolutely incredible.
My mom bought a new '75 Dart Sport off the showroom floor. She also thought about buying a new Plymouth Arrow but the rest of the family voted it out! (so glad we did)The Dart was the fastback model like the Demon. It was loaded. Had a 318 and a 4-speed on the floor. No console, but bucket seats. It was black with a black interior, half vinyl roof and had a flat black stripe the went down the side and over the roof. It had the Rally Wheels. I remember the right side torsion bar became weak or something and the car always leaned to the right. I also remember the "check EGR" light would flash every so often. In 1980, my friends and I skipped school on St. Patricks Day and went into the city (Cleveland, Ohio) for the parade. We drove the Dart. I remember doing 110 mph down I90 with 5 of us in the car. It was a fun day. I miss the Dart. We sold it a few years later..I wish I knew what happened to it
I had 4 door versions of these cars at different times and they were both great. You couldn't kill the Dart -- bought it new and finally sold it with 125k after the auto transmission got cranky. Slant 6. Bought the Nova for $1000 from a little old lady in suburban Chicago who'd only put 30k on it over 6 years. I drove it another 70k over the next 6 years, by which time the body was rusting away, the windshield leaked, the knob on the shifter fell off, several heater controls had snapped off in the cold weather and the trunk started to smell bad because the emergency blanket and towels back there would soak up the roadspray that came in thru the rust holes. But it would not die! Sold it for $200. The brother/ sister act is truly bizarre. But I love the groovy send-off party.
@@justenough730 :70 ss396 nova 1/4 mile 14.2 @how much money? A 70 340 Dart Swinger with Ronnie Sox behind the wheel, 14.7 @ a HELL OF A LOT LESS MONEY! I'll take the DART!
@@dpt4402 That was a big problem with those cars, especially those with mono leafs. My dad had a 69 2dr with the 230 six, 3 auto, p/s, pb. He bought it used in 78. The spring pin was already broken. He had it fixed but the shop recommended multi leafs with the reinforced center mounting pin. He did so and drove it until the trans went out in 83. Other than that, it was a pretty decent car. I worked at a spring/chassis shop in the late 80s, and we still saw Novas with broken pins come in.
Watching this at lunch time in my Daily driver 68Dart.. when they show the Dash.. it's a Match.. even if mine isn't that new. Thanks for the Post always great More Darts please..
Love these old dealer commercial. I have a 71 with a BB 383. It turns a lot of heads and the best thing is, you don't see them as much as the mustang, camaro, nova and chevelle .
We have two 1970 Dodge Dart's. One Orange 340 Swinger 4 Speed and one Dart GT Custom with a aftermarket factory spec 340 with a cam that is EF8 Green. It is a 3 Speed Auto. Both like new!
That was the beginning of a tragic decline. The only good thing about the Aspen and Volare was the wagon body style they reintroduced in the compact segment.
My father bought a brand new 1979 Plymouth Volare. Not only was it a good looking car, we had for over 15 years until my brother totaled it. Not once in those 15 years did we have any problems.
MOPAR ALL THE WAY BABY!!! 53 AND SINCE I LIKED REAL CARS ( 8 YEARS OLD) 45 YEARS IVE BEEN A BUYER, RACER, AND BUILDER FOR BIG BLOCK , 727 TORQUEFLIGHT , 904, 340 AND EVEN A STRONG 318 BUILD ( 450 HP) NO KIDDING. WHEN I WAS YOUNG, 318s were bulletproof engines that were great for daily driving or 275,000 miles or more! Not racing. Now, the last 10 years or so They have builds as much as 525. I dont, not sure about that but 450 is strong and 1 that i built, the first 8 yrs ago has hit the 1/4 1000 times and its a great daily driver to. Thanks DODGE, CHRYSLER, JEEP, RAM AND OFCOURSE THE SRT BOYS AND HOTELS
I had three friends who had Novas with 396 cubic inch with 375HP engines (my choice). That said there was another friend who had a Dart with a 340. He could hang with the big boys. He had "Poison Dart" on the rear quarter panel.
I have a 1974 Dodge Dart swinger 318 and absolutely love it! Not the most powerful car on the road but with some little touches she surprises and lot of people and turns many heads!
I went into this thinking of my HS principal and his Dart Swinger from '71 Hate to admit that though i'd normally be Chevy all the way, this Dart looks good.
I had a gym teacher with an older Dart. I think it was 68 with a three on the tree. It was probably the 170 Slant Six not the performance oriented 225.
I really enjoy these old videos. I've noticed Dodge brags how they have full instrumentation on their cars, which is how it should be. But sometime between then and my 2010 Challenger RT Classic they lost their way. My RT Classic has limited gauges, which has always bugged me as a major cheap out. True, ownership isn't the same. But legacy should remain.
The filmstrip was shown at Dodge dealers to test the knowledge and memory of the salesmen. And I'm guessing that Chrysler Corporation(now known as FCA US,LLC)added a girl to see if the salesmen could take the quiz without being distracted by her.
I drove them both in the times and they were good automobiles, I was able to step on the 340 and it was; nice engine lets put it that way. Only the six in the Nova.
I had a 74 Swinger someone put a 340 in and that little bastard would fly. More than one guy I raced, some I won, some I lost, would ask me what the hell have you got in that thing?
Why is she living with her brother? Shouldn't his name be Sonny Beach? How does she get those go go boots off? What's the performance of a slant 6 on a 12% grade? Downhill. Why am I here? Why are any of us here? Wouldn't a Demon to Nova comparison be more relevent?
The Dodge Demon could also be bought with a slant 6 as well . I looked into those not long ago because I had a chance to buy one that was a drag car from the 80s set up with a full tube chassis tubbed & had a built 12:1 413 max wedge with a Dominator & full race prepped 727 that was running in the 9 s back then all engine no power adders & I found out they could be optioned with a leaning tower of power or the hillside Hemi lol . It had wheelie bars on the back but you could see grind marks in the lower rear bumper from it doing wheelies without the wheelie bars lol . The guy wanted 5 grand for the car but it was pretty rough from sitting a lot of years in a barn so I had no idea if it even ran or if it was actually a real 413 Max wedge engine or not being this guy did a trade for it to restore another Mopar this guy with the Demon had . Had no title & was strictly a drag car pretty much & I wanted something I could pro street & drive on the streets & Hiways so I passed on it !
There was an option package a limited number of dealers offered, similar to Yenko with GM. But frames were cut and other light weight mods made it very rare, with no warranty.
Certain dealers offered 383 and even 440 Darts and Dusters in 70, like Grand Spaulding in Chicago, after Chrysler officially dropped those engines from the factory option list. They also offered 6 pack induction through certain dealers through 72 on 340s. What I will say is that SB Novas handled quite well with the optional HD suspension package.. so much so, that they were the cars to beat ( in their class) in MSP tests through 79.
Hi my mopar com. can you please turn on the caption on this one you almost always have them captioned love all the car's owned some of the best one's thank you C😎😎L
Unfortunately, no. The factory big block Darts ended with the 69 model year. Truthfully, they drive so much better with the small block. I have three and they are all small block, but there's no denying how cool a big block Dart is!
You have to wonder whether the same corporate mentality used to train a salesforce was employed in R&D, manufacturing, and marketing. If so, what culminated in the late 70s and 80s makes sense.
Learned to drive on a 72 Dart sedan with the 225. First car was a 69 Acadian with the 230/Powerglide transmission. No comparison. The Dart was by far the better car.
My dad had a 71 swinger he purchased as a family car. It rust severely from the NH winters. It had a hole rusted completely thru in 2 years on the top of the front fenders . Was a falling down junk in 5 years. Traded it for a 76 swinger. The 76 was one of the first with catalytic converter and was way worse than the 71. All the rust and a crappy running engine. Chrysler legacy.
A super 60 Package GLH Turbo Omni beat every one of these Mopar land barges in a magazine test from the early 90s, I cant remember the Magazine though...Mopar action magazine?
@silverbird58 no, it got pulled off youtube because motortrend got greedy and wants a month subscription for sub-par videos. btw, no it was not lop-sided. mopar made more tq because of the ginormous piston compared to the chevy.
1970 was the year the girls looked beautiful with they're Turtle neck sweaters, the guys looked good with the sideburns, and the cars just not only looked beautiful and apart, they're where also truly American made out of real metal unlike modern vehicles that are not only overpriced but made out of plastic, and they all look like the same Egg shells that you see on eggs.
The dart was a sportier looking car than a nova and the 340 was a very stout engine but the dart was a flimsy rust bucket. The nova was a much more substantial car.
Rubbish. The A bodies were built tougher and stronger - just check out the solid K frame and front end engineering and the axle design. Compared to the Nova tin car from 'Generic Motors'/ One leaf spring - you gotta be joking!
being a ford guy i am kinda out of this one..but if i had to choose..it will be the dodge..been around novas like these back in the day and always thought they were just a cheap chevy..the nova would walk all over the dodge with top power plants..but its not always about top power...funny they didnt mention chevy still using the cheap ass 2 speed powerglide
@@justenough730 and motor trend or hotrod magazine did a small block engine muscle car shootout .....when the dust settled...it was the boss 351 that took top honors
@@merc-ni7hy check out the winners of the 1971 winter national finals every single catagory from stock thru top fuel was Chrysler powered to take the win i don't see Ford in that win column
@@justenough730 thats cuzz there was so much support for chrysler....wasnt bob glidden setting track records with a small block ford????..back then there was zero support
Sorry Mopar guys nobody wants that dart nowadays but plenty of demand for that 70 nova. Plus Chevy had a big block that year.but earlier their was a hemi dart.that 340 has many similarities to the sbc.
Greg the Hemi dart could only be bought for drag racing as a factory drag car special order only that couldn't be driven on the street because it was a full 12:1 race Hemi & the car came with no title or a VIN number ! It even came with a decal stating competition only ! They did have a 440 option as well that was done by another source for Dodge but we're very rare & you could buy the 69 383 Dart GTS which are rare as well ! I know someone who has one a 383 4 spd car that's restored in very nice original condition ! Those Hemi Darts & the 69 BO29 Hemi fastback Barracudas were the very first factory drag cars built & were a terror on the drag strips back then but I think they only made about 50 of them if I remember most being sold to factory race drivers & some dealerships that raced . They have there own class for those very same cars now with some of them running low 8s old school carburetors & manual transmission which is neat as heck ! Check them out on RU-vid here in the SS/A & SS/B classes if I remember or just type in 68 factory Hemi Dart drag car or 69 BO29 Hemi fastback Barracuda & stuff will show up !
i cant help chevy idiots obsess over a certain year model and body style. cheaper is better. you chevy boys ought to know that, accounting on how cheap all your bolt ons are. too bad you have to add so many to keep up with stock mopar parts.
Why does the Chevy dealer look like a green alien mexican? I think I would rather go to a Dodge dealer if Chevrolet dealers are green. As for the cars they both seem competitive only the dodge will likely be in the shop every other week.
They should have gone with the A-body retro styling for the dart reissue, a lot of us grew up with these cars and would have bought one if they looked like the car in the video or like the one Mannix had
Dart was such a better built car. The Nova was good enough to the point where consumers were brainwashed by GM's good advertising. They preyed on the lazy who didn't want to do their homework.
and the nova will be found in a junkyard with a blown up 350, centerline wheels, different doors, and bowtie stickers all over it. the mopar? itll be just like it left the showroom floor. thats something ive noticed about chevy people...
