1969 Chevy Nova Super Sport drag racing 1969 Dodge Dart. Factory Stock Drag Race. Pure Stock Muscle Car Drag Race.
First car is a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS 340, the other a 1969 Chevrolet Nova SS396. The Dart has a 340 V8 and the Nova has a 396 V8. The Dart was rated 275 horsepower, while the Nova L78 was rated 375 horsepower. The Dart has a TorqueFlite automatic transmission, and the Nova has a TH400 automatic. Rear gearing on the Nova is 4.10, but the Dart has 4.30. The Dart is slightly heavier at 3626 pounds (that includes the driver), but the Nova is only 3410 pounds. Car Life tested a 1969 Dodge Dart GTS 340 with a 4-speed and 3.23 rear gears and it ran 14.82 seconds @ 96 mph. Hot Rod tested a 1969 Nova L78 with 3.55 rear gears and an auto transmission and it ran 13.87 seconds @ 105.14 mph.

Rules
For 1955 to 1979 muscle cars built in United States and Canadian assembly plants with a minimum warranty of 12 months and 12,000 miles.
Drivetrain:
Automatic Transmissions: The transmission and torque converter must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Shift improver kits are allowed. After-market shifters are not allowed. No manual valve bodies. No lightweight internal components allowed.
Manual Transmissions: The transmission must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. 3-speeds may be upgraded to the correct 4-speed if originally available.
Rear Axles:
The rear axle must be of the same manufacturer as the car. Any gear ratio is allowed. Driveshaft safety loops are mandatory on all cars 13.99 and faster!
Engine:
Must be factory correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. Dealer installed engines and dealer performed engine modifications are not allowed. Casting numbers must be correct for the year and horsepower claimed including intake manifold, heads, and exhaust manifolds. Modifications are prohibited. Blocks do not have to be "numbers-matching," but they must be the correct displacement. Overbores up to .070" are allowed. Stock cranks only. NO strokers! Random P&G checks are possible. Compression may be increased to the greater of NHRA allowable stock blue print or 1.5 over advertised compression. NHRA
Electrical System:
The battery must be retained in the original location and securely fastened down with the original style hold down. The charging system must be fully operational at all times.
Fuel System and Carburetor:
The carburetor must be correct for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Jetting and metering changes are permitted. THE CHOKE ASSEMBLY MUST BE IN PLACE AND FUNCTIONAL!
Valve Train:
The complete valve train must be factory stock for the year, make, and horsepower claimed. Rocker arm ratio must be correct for the year and horsepower claimed. Roller tip rockers allowed as long as correct ratio is used.
Camshaft:
The camshaft must be correct for the model, year, and horsepower claimed for duration, lift, and type of lifter (hydraulic or solid). No roller cams allowed.
Exhaust:
Cast iron exhaust manifolds are mandatory and must be correct for the year, model, and horsepower claimed. NO internal modifications to the exhaust manifolds are allowed. Under no circumstances will headers be allowed, including those cars that came with headers delivered in the trunk. The exhaust system may be upgraded to a maximum of 2.5-inch head and tail pipes.
Ignition System:
The ignition system must be stock, including the distributor, cap, coil, and wires. Points may be replaced with any electronic conversion that fits under the stock distributor cap.
Suspension:
Front Suspension: Stock springs and shocks must be retained. Drag springs and shocks that allow excessive lift during launches are NOT allowed.
Rear Suspension: Traction devices are limited to hop-stop bars for the upper control arms on coil-spring cars. Pinion snubbers and clamping of springs are allowed on leaf-spring cars.
Tires & Wheels:
Reproduction tires or radial tires only. No soft compound tires of any kind allowed. Retread tires are not allowed. Use of traction compounds or rubber-softening chemicals on tires are strictly prohibited.

Goodday C & Z, What a great video, you got it wrong 340 cubic inch is short for 3,400 hp you need to get it right. E55 absolute killer engine with X casting heads. Begging a good friend of mine to sell a 1969 / 340 he has had sitting in his garage for last 14 years. Great race, great comments. @@taylorpinkney7253 no it wasn’t. You can easily find the statistics on the pure stock musclecar drag race website. That car is always between 3550 and 3650 pounds when it weighs in the day before the event, and it has raced for many years.

NHRA rates the weight and corrected hp for the Dart GTS 340 at 3,118 lbs less driver and 299 hp. The Nova SS396 - L-78 was rated at 3,424 lbs and 405 hp. Indexes favor the Nova .60 seconds.

No it didn't run out of gear. What you are seeing is a Big Block coming around a small block at the End of the track...and also the nova has a rear end gear of 4.10

Depends. My dad had a '69 Dart GTS and it was well tuned. He was killing 369 cars like Chevelles back in the day. His Dart was known as a big block killer, because he would beat most he came up against with, especially racing other MOPAR big blocks.

Ok just read an article where a bone stock L78 was dyno tested at 425 hp @5800 rpms. So we need to find a Hemi Dart to put up against him. The stock 340's are more like 315-320 hp.

I have to say that the soild lifters in the Nova make it conpareable to the Hemi. The Hemi guys used to cry foul back in the day when the Chevy's clackity clacked to the line.

Curb weight for the 1969 GTS 340 was 3250 pounds, 383 cars were another 100 pounds. Add a driver and some weight in the trunk and you are easily at 3600 pounds.

That Dart was impressive. I was a 80's teen. There was a 396 Nova that ruled this rural county for a time. New GT's and Iroc's were no match for this beast.

Pretty much the way it was on the street,small blocks would definitely catch a LOT of biggie blocks nappin. At the light , at roughly 1 long block usually first red light The small blocks usually won stock for stock But , …. After that my 440/375 would smoke em ,kid had a highly respected 66ss 327/375 and I cleaned his clock ,the ss was on his dads Carlot the next day FOR SALE 😂but a better match of this race would be a 383 dart which will EASILY hang with the nova ,or a Hemi which will totally devastate it

These cars are very cool but not close to what rolled of the showroom floor. These are modded track cars. Some not much but others a lot so it’s hard to compare your old muscle cars. Great to see them all!

Bottom end would rip if they were allowed to put better tires under it. It can also be argued the base 325hp 396 with bigger valves carb and cam could out perform the L78 stock as the large port heads don't really start to payoff in stock trim. This isn't a universal statement because there are many variables, but my experience racing BBC in 70s and 80s was you needed an L88 or larger cam to make the big port heads "work". I raced an L88 clone engine, a real L78 and a 325hp 396 (code unknown). Once I swapped in larger valves an L88 cam and bigger carb that oval port engine was hot. Back then you could buy these cars running under $1000 and complete engines under $200. Most of this stuff was sold off decades ago but still have my L78 intake dated late in 1969. In high school I would save my lunch money to buy gas so I could run time trials on the weekend. Miss those days.

Good race . Yes, everyone under rated the engine power back then but I think you must have been in the mushrooms or something in your high ratings. I remember the 396/375 was actually closer to 425 and nowhere near 1000hp.
