I love vintage leather goalie gear!
These 34" 1970's Cooper GP59XL 4 knee roll pads are a rarity, and my set is in fantastic condition. I did put all new straps on them several months ago. According to the graphics on them, they're NHL Professional quality pads too. : )
Like you already know, I try my best to keep my as gear 'era correct' as possible. Tonight is a little bit of a stretch as a few pieces are actually early 1980's variations of models that were around in the 70's...but that's close enough.
I made a save with head while wearing a 1977 Cooper SK600 helmet and HM200 cage (approx. 1975). Not too many goalies can say they've done that in 2020 and lived to tell about it. Yep...my head didn't explode on impact!

I've done a few now. Typically involves repairing cracks, filling in missing chunks..and re-glassing the blade/paddle. Feels good to get something like that back to usable condition...and the projects keep me sane.

Just awesome! Back in the 70s I had 59ls followed by the pro model (95ls). GM 12 and 21 trapper (at one point a GM12 trapper) after having used GM9 set. This takes me back!

Oh man that is a sweet selection of old stuff. Love the 4 rolls and that glove is gorgeous! CooperGoalie - I'm in no place to give advice but when I watch goalies from the era of your pads, they setup for the shot with their legs together and stick blade flat right in front of their skates (essentially taking away any direct shot) - then they kick out for saves rather than falling on the pads. Lots of paddle down too once they are down.

So...a big reason for not playing actual vintage stand-up style (for me anyway) is that I've only been doing this for a couple years now. I don't have that muscle memory from decades of tending net. I guess technically I play a more of a 'hybrid' style, but in reality I'm just trying to react to what is happening, and just try to get anything on the puck in any way I can to keep it out.

Are the skates vintage too? Do you repair your own leather also?

Vintage but not the correct vintage. These are CCM Tacks 852 Kevlar skates from the 90’s. I’ve found switching skates from game to game is very hard to do and be comfortable. Yes, I do most of my repair and restore work myself. If it’s something I don’t have the knowledge, skill, or tools to do..the legendary Glenn Miller is my go-to guy.

Mounted to a couple pucks sounds interesting. It might bother me during the game knowing there's already 2 behind me though 🤣.

You just have to keep searching. Ebay, Facebook, Craigslist, OfferUp, Kijiji, etc etc etc. This model is called the Cooper TP (throat protector). Try doing searches with that model name to help you.

My first pair of leather pads were stuffed with horse hair. Doing leglifts in practice was always lots of fun. The kids who have nylon and Styrofoam pads these days don’t know what hockey is really like.
