I own two Greco Super Real EGF's 1000 and 1200 from 1980. They both are really awsome high end rock n roll machines.

I have a '75 eg800 and an '82 EG59. Seriously bang for your buck guitars that are full on Les Pauls, regardless of the name on the headstock. Nice job on breathing some life into this one!

Right on I have a 89 EG59-70 flame top and I love it best Les Paul I have ever owned. I think I'm gonna buy me another one I want an EG68 custom from the mint collection years, I think there the best years of Greco well that's my opinion Would love to see pic's of yours....

@@johnsmith-oh2xo I've moved the '82 on, but I've made a couple of amateurish videos for the '75 and a few others. Not great quality, but they get the point across. Best wishes and I hope you find that other Greco!

I just picked up an early 82-83 Hondo 737 lefty for 300.00. Polished the frets, straightened the neck, restrung, polished, and it plays awesome! It’s very close to the first electric my mom and dad got me in 81. For a cheap, Korean made plywood guitar with maple veneer, it sounds really cool! All my childhood memories, playing to sabbath and ac/dc albums in my bedroom… worth the money, if you can find on4 in good shape!

Looks like a nice example of a 70's "Lawsuit" era LP. One problem I've seen with these guitars is a worn out switch that causes the guitar to cut out. It's an easy fix but people always seem to think the pickup is what's bad.

That thing cleaned up nicely. I never knew Greco even put the fret nibs on it too. That just goes to show the detail and how particular they were about building those. I’m pretty sure that including those nibs made for a lot more labor than if they hadn’t. Most people are aware how good some of the lawsuit guitars really are. The high end Greco and Tokais are legit. I’ve always wanted a lawsuit LP but haven’t come across the one yet. I’d hate to order one online and get it shipped only to find out I didn’t like the neck on it. I have to imagine the neck profiles are kinda all over the place on the old ones.

with a fairly strong neodymium magnet you can pull the backs off those machine heads take apart and clean em out, file any burrs off the gears to smooth emup, new washers and gaskets, then some good light lithium grease they be like new again, cover up and go..

That's good information. Mine had the Kluson type, and the shafts were a bit loose causing tuning instability. I swapped in Shaler 18:1 tuners, and kept the originals in the case.

I use simple green on my guitars too and then after its dry I slap on some ghs guitar gloss and let it dry and wipe off,the simple green takes the shmutz off and doesn't hurt the finish

I think Gibson makes a valid instrument, but I don't get all they hype about them. I can appreciate the original company for their innovations, but that name has changed hands multiple times over the last 5 decades, and isn't the same.

I love it, its a great looking and sound LP style guitar. What state were the frets in because if it still had nibs they have never been replaced, in 50 years? I like the fact that you get a solid top with these Greco's rather than a veneer which is common in for example Epiphone mid priced LP copies nowadays.
@qua7771
@qua7771 7 месяцев назад
Flame top Greco's usually had veneer over maple tops unless specifically ordered. Does Epiphone not have a maple top anymore?

These are made in the same factory as the 70's Ibanez and the serial number tells me Feb 1977 it was built. The letter is the month and the 2nd and 3rd digit is the year.

i have a '77 greco les paul i bought in japan...it had a BLACK pick guard tho' wonder why this 1 is white? PLUS mine had diff. volume knobs ( this 1 looks just like gibson knobs) my greco had black 1's ( going to keep it that way..) BUT the gibson knobs look better , Also the pickups..& rest of the metal pieces were gold plated on mine....i Also need to replace atleast 1 tuneing knob ( also gold) but no idea how to find an exact match. to keep it 100% greco looking..parts and all. I did take it in for a guitar TEC tuneup...and MAN...the string action is every bit as LIGHT and good as a Gibson!! lol i still have the original japanese Price card insind my case that came with my guitar at the time ..In YEN ofcourse. :) i can not belive 1 of these in great condition is only going for $650.00-Ish dollars.... oh well, still much more that i paid for mine at the time...thanks for the lesson :) +1

Those are indeed bound fret nibs. cool, I wanted to see how thick the maple cap is. I think I saw it when you opened the control cavity but that does not tell me if there is veneer on top. Can you tell me? Was hoping you pull those pups out so I could see if it has a maple cap and or a veneer top. It's 600 buck used guitar more than likely so scotchbrite away and simple green. You aren't going to hurt that finish with that. Throw some 57 classics in there and keep it or sell it or not.
@qua7771
@qua7771 7 месяцев назад
I have three of these, and the have solid maple caps. Most flame tops have a veneer over a maple top. The original Maxon pickups are amazing, and swapping them for '57 Classics would be foolish. Maxon Dry Z pickups have sold for over $2,000 a set for instance, and are rarer than original PAF's.

@monmixer
@monmixer 9 месяцев назад
I have been looking at this. I have never bought a Gibson because when I looked for my first expensive guitar they were still to expensive and this was in 78. also the stock in the area where I live was poor even though we are a city. Secondary but still a real city with 3 good size music stores and a thriving music community. That is mostly gone now even though we do still have great players here. The DUI laws killed the clubs because it's more rural here and no safety in numbers when you leave bar with a few drinks in you so most of the roadhouses ans such have such down. Summer is thriving because of al the outdoor stuff but winter sucks as only a few clubs around the valley have bands every weekend. Back in the 70's thru 90s I played at least 3 nights a week and 4 nights most of the time. I have a 4 digit Hamer standard and two Fender telecasters and I'm curious in my old age at what I'm missing about a thick mahogany body with a maple cap and a 24 and 3/4 scale length. I have been looking at the 480s and 500 models because they are a little cheaper with a set neck of course.
@qua7771
@qua7771 7 месяцев назад
Your question is "what am I missing". That's a matter of preference. I play LP type guitars almost exclusively, but I noticed, they're not for everyone. Some people like them, and some don't. I think we have a tendency to want things we don't have. You have to try one.

@qua7771

This particular model does not. Some of their lower priced models, are constructed almost like a semi-hollow body. It depends on the production year.

I would be cautious allowing simple green to contact on most all finishes, especially a nitrocellulose type.
@qua7771
@qua7771 7 месяцев назад
That was my thought as well. It may not notice an immediate reaction, but a year later someone might. Simple Green is harsh.

Well taking of the patina from the old hard ware is a big no no for me
@BerensteinGBear
@BerensteinGBear 5 месяцев назад
I used to think the same thing until I did it once. There's a difference between patina and gunk; it's a bad contrast when you clean the finish to a mirror polish but all the metal is faded and dull. Not to mention that "patina" makes your hands rough and smell like iron, and reduces its ability to be serviced. The natural patina will still hold the pitting and character when polished, in fact, I think it pops the age even more but looks cared for. I.e., "30 year old guitar that's cared for" vs. "5 year old abused Epiphone."
