For the 1971 model year, the Dodge and Plymouth B-body lineup was slated for a complete refresh. An all new, sleeker style body was penned for the updated lineup. While the new design appeared to some to be larger than the previous B-Body cars from 68-70, the updated cars were actually smaller overall. Luckily for buyers, the new platform cars were still able to accept the entire lineup of engines, from the utilitarian slant six all the way up to the elephantine 426 Hemi. They looked leaner, meaner, and more modern, utilizing aerodynamic touches to aid them moving through the air.
This particular 1971 Dodge Charger R/T finished in stunning Gunmetal Gray with Black and Silver two-tone interior is one of the best driven examples known to exist. She is 100% numbers-matching and correct, retains her original sheet metal, and is completely rotisserie restored. Provenance includes extensive owner history and original paperwork including original broadcast sheet.
The powerful 440 engine, with SIX PACK carburetor package, sends 385 horsepower through an automatic transmission. Also included was the Air Grabber hood, with a scoop that would pop up at the flip of a switch, allowing for increased fresh, colder air to enter the engine, resulting in increased power. But the car's order sheet requested stripe delete with no vinyl top, and an interior perfectly complements the Gunmetal Gray finish. One of Tim Wellborn's favorite color combinations, this car was also the favorite pick of all those attending the 40th Anniversary 1971 B-Body Reunion held at the Wellborn Musclecar Museum.
FACTS:
• 1971 Dodge Charger R/T 440-6

• 440c.i. 385hp /490 lb-ft SIX PACK engine
• Air Grabber hood scoop

Love that color! I had a 69 GTX that color. Beautiful! Also, I owned one of your past Challenger R/T convertibles. (Plump Crazy Pam with purple interior).

The most under-rated design, and definitely one of the best. I have a 71 Charger R/T as well, and I just can't stop loving the look if it!

Loved that body style since it came out, 71 & 72 for sure. Didn't care as much for the 73 Plymouth version.

I know everyone likes the 68 and 69 charger, but man this is nice. Perfect rims, color is beautiful and I love the early 70s Chargers too.

Boy I miss my 71 Dodge Charger, my parents bought it used in or around 1977-78, my Dad took the vinyl top off that was damaged & it was a rust golden color- I assume was original, but we had it repainted a beautiful dark metallic blue. I purchased it from my parents when I was 16, in 1982, I loved it, it was not the RT, just had the original 318 engine but it was pretty fast & rode smooth even at high speeds, unfortunately I did what most teenager boys do in a Dodge Charger, I raced often, though I knew with the stock 318, the races I would be foolish to challenge, but I got myself kind of lured into a race with a guy in a 68 camaro , I was 18 years old , going round a curve , & the suspension of the Charger was not the best on curves, at the speed I was traveling, Run off the road hitting a large culvert , and the car began flipping, probably flipped 4,5 maybe 6 times before coming to rest on its hood, the car was still running, purring like a kitten upside down. I kicked the door open & crawled out, Before the wreck the body was practically flawless 😵, but as I looked at my Charger I realized there wasn’t a single spot, roof, hood, front , back , left side or right side that didn’t have multiple dents in it, the car was trashed, I ended up selling it to someone who wanted the engine, as it was about all that was salvageable. I’m hoping one day to be able to afford to replace that car. 34 years later, I guess , I’ll have to wait a few more years.

Tim....great videos. Question : In all the years you have been collecting Chargers....how many, IF any, have had rear window louvers....would be same as offered on 71 Road Runners and GTX models....WITHOUT vinyl tops. And recently, so many Plymouth B bodies are being shown with painted bumpers. When as far as I know, Plymouth offered a painted front bumper option....NEVER on the rear. They LOOK great, but is it correct ? Also, have you ever seen any B bodies with the "visor applique' option on TOP of the front bumper? Painted or not ? Part is shown in illustration in the Chrysler 1971 BODY manual...?

Beautiful. My Dad had a red 66' charger 383. Later he bought a 60' c8da'440. I later bought a 71' cuda 383. Your car is beautiful gunmetal grey nice interior. My cousin married a guy that had a 70' cuda 440 six pak car with shaker. He tested my dad to a race. My dad told him his 6pak carbs were so out of tune he could barely start it. It sounded like a dragon that someone kicked in the azz. My cuda' had rallye rims and was orage with big billboards 383. We went way back in mopars 62 or 63 361 push button transmition once dad took off and flipped me to the backbseat. Therecwas no seatbelt laws but i saw a man dying at the side of the road he fell out hit his head against a telephone pole. My dad's favorite was a 68' charger with black vynl top and those round tail light and retracktable headlights like the 66'. Best wishes. Beautiful car NEVER sell that car. It is PRISTINE.
