The 1971 DT1 250 mx was the first motocross bike made available to the public by Yamaha. 2 years before the MX250, and 3 years before the first YZ250a. The Genuine Yamaha Tuning kit (GYT) bumped the horsepower up from 21 to 30. Basically a stripped down DT1 enduro, they did well on the tracks until the YZ's, Elsinores, and KX's came out. This one will be running in the vintage class with RMVMC. Come check out all the great bikes at the vintage races!

This is super awesome and great info!! I have a '77 dt250 mx and going to be rebuilding it this coming season... Gonna have to look into the GYT kit but ill be doing new bearings, reeds, open up the ports, new pistons rings and seals, plus new clutch kit. Great content and really looking forward to bringing new life to my. Old 77

DT1 is piston port and DT250MX is reed valve, so not sure the GYT kit would work that well?

Will do Pete, I got it all back together today minus the gas tank which I still need to paint. There is a vintage race in a couple of weeks and I'll have it on the track for that. I'll get some video of the races and hopefully some gopro footage from the bike! Cheers

COOL! I REMEMBER THE GYT KITS BUT WHERE DID YOU GET THE BUTTON MAG? I HAVE A 75 DT250 WITH 2K ORIG MILES THAT I WANT TO PUT AN MX TYPE IGNITION ON. I'M NOT SURE IF THE MX250 USED THAT TYPE IGNITION. YOU'RE THE FIRST PERSON I EVER SAW WITH ONE FOR AN OLD POINTS DT. THE FACT THAT YOU ARE PUTTING ONE ON TELLS ME YOU KNOW YOUR STUFF. EASY DT TO YZ POWERBAND MOD. MY H2 750, LIKE ALL H2 TRIPLES, HAS A FACTORY BUTTON MAG CAUSING THE POWER BAND THEY'RE FAMOUS FOR.

Hi George, thanks for watching, this is one of my favorite bike builds of the last couple of years! The ignition used on this bike is made by HPI (Horse Power Ignitions) and is available through their website and many locations online. It isn't very expensive but like all HPI products it's a very good product. Good luck with your bike!

That's going to be a nice bike when you get it put back together ! Please make a video of it running when it's done . I had a 74 MX360 many years ago & it was a fun bike to ride & have been a Hammer fan for years .
