Watch the complete final round broadcast of the 1971 Masters. Charles Coody wins by two strokes over Jack Nicklaus and Johnny Miller. (Though the original broadcast was in color, archival footage is in black and white.)
I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Coody about two weeks ago at his course in Abilene, TX. I didn't know I was speaking to him until the shop attendant made the remark. I asked him who he beat in '71 and he said "a couple of blond guys." Very pleasant fellow.
I was just thinking the same thing. I''ve been watching these final-round broadcasts of the Masters from the late '60s and throughout the '70s and Tom seems to ALWAYS be in contention, often with a realistic chasnce to win. Amazing record... I don't know what the numbers show, but he has to be among those players with the most top-ten finishes in this tournament. Sasly, I don't believe he ever won it. I loved to watch him play... such a graceful, fluid swing he had.
Met Charles Coody in 1997 at Meadowbrook club long island 🏝️ northville classic Sr tour event - walked up to him in the middle of the fairway and said to him " I know a man 🙂♂️👞 who won the" masters " when I see him ! " He smiled and couldn'tve been nicer ! I noticed he had an old ping anser 85020 , but it wasn't a " Scottsdale " and I told him I was a " collector " and we had a nice exchange 💱 about it ! signed my program ,too !
Funny how they referred to Miller in commentary as "John", yet in the early days too Watson was referred to as "Tommy". I dont think Watson would have relished being called "Tommy". Imagine if Nicklaus had been referred to as "Jackie" lol
I just watched the 1970s masters and it was in Color. Why is 1971 in black and white. Maybe bits and pieces were in color on the 70s masters maybe this one will have some color too
One of the best! The yips did him! 1st Win 1971 last Win 1994! He came out of the booth to beat the Players who were not happy with some of his comments over the years! Have to laught
25:43 too bad this is a B&W kinescope. Would have loved to see John Derr's sport jacket in full technicolor. It may have been the late, great Craig Sager's inspiration.
We watch a 1971 telecast of the Masters in awful quality black and white, yet The Wizard of Oz filmed in 1938, in colour, was a beautiful screening rivalling any digital production of today.....It's always about the politics and money.
