My dad bought a 71 Grand Prix in 72, it was really nice, and it had one feature I've never seen on another GP, and that was a leather rally tilt "Trans Am" steering wheel. That thing made that car, but I don't think that was an option on a GP, at least I've never seen it before or since. He bought the car from a friend that owned a Pontiac dealership, my guess he'd have a new car every year and he had his shop install the wheel. It's the only explanation that makes sense.
Those splitters are a cheezy touch. They detract from the cars original panache. And let's be honest.......for the considered bother it was to "wrap" the steering wheel in that homemade cover to cover the cracks undoubtedly there, wouldn't it have been more prudent to wait until an appropriate factory replacement was found...be it a std. example, or preferably the Formula wheel? '71 & '72 GP SJs were the be all, end all Pontiacs when true performance was on the way out.
