“Bermuda's greatest party boat”
The tender "Canima" doing what it was meant to do - Ferrying passengers between the City of Hamilton and cruise liners moored in the Great Sound / Grassy Bay. In this case the S.S. Oronsay where our passengers were the last stop by the tender before departure for Cherbourg.
Departure on the Canima from Albouy's Point with a Ivan Franko class Russian Liner docked on Front Street (most likely the M.S. Alexandr Pushkin who sailed from Montreal & Quebec in 1972), and the Bank of Butterfield's Ried Street addition under construction.
The cruise out to the ship passes PWs Marine, The Hamilton Princess Hotel and the brand new Southampton Princess Hotel in the distance.
A sizable crowd disembarks just before departure, and the Oronsay is escorted by a yacht (anyone recognize?) as we leave Bermuda in the distance. Some time is spent above decks and we end at a charming outdoor market in France.
The tender Canima was a dependable warhorse for Bermuda ferrying passengers from the mid 1960s until retirement in 1988. It was given the moniker “Bermuda's greatest party boat” from the decade of Collage Week parties from the 1970s as it held up to 1,000 people with the Bermuda Strollers, a rock calypso group, holding court .
It had a sad end sinking from neglect in New Brunswick’s Miramichi Bay, in 2012.
The S.S. Oronsay, launched in 1951 and known for its world cruises, continued cruising for only another 2 years and was sent to the scrapyard in 1975. It is famously known for Musician David Bowie travelling on the Oronsay from San Francisco to Yokohama in March/April 1973 due to his fear of flying.
