In the second installment of our motor swap series, Ian and the crew take on the next monumental step in bringing #dalesdragon back to its former glory. With the old 18RC motor now removed, the stage is set for a historic upgrade: installing the legendary 18RG engine into our 1972 Toyota Celica. But the journey is far from straightforward.
As we dive into the engine and transmission upgrade, we're faced with the challenge of piecing together a puzzle that's been years in the making. Almost a decade passed since the 18RG was first purchased and assembled from a basket of parts, and with it, a wealth of specific knowledge about rare parts and configurations has faded away. This is where we need you, our dedicated community of Toyota enthusiasts and technical wizards.
We're calling on you to help fill the gaps in our knowledge. From identifying obscure parts to advising on tuning nuances, your input could be the key to ensuring Dale's transformation is nothing short of spectacular. This is more than just a project; it's a collaborative journey to revive a piece of racing history.
Follow along as we navigate the complexities of this engine swap, share our discoveries, and lean on the collective wisdom of our viewers. Your comments and insights could be the difference between a good outcome and a great one. Subscribe to stay updated on Dale's progress and join us in making automotive history.
Also.. how many times do I say the word "Sweaty" in this video? First person to comment the answer gets.. respect and admiration.. for now. I promise we'll have merch sometime this season and then I can give out real prizes.

Ian - Need to pop in right away and say that I already got some awesome help from Charlie and Jake who informed me that I need a different plate on the passenger side of the block that has a PCV outlet in it. Jake had one on the shelf and now its on the way to me. We'll be knocking that off the list right away!

I dont run the side vent, but its a preference thing, the PCV system is a little finnicky unless you have all the parts. Alot of people i know, and myself just run the RC blanking plate on the side, a hose on the top to a catch can.

@@FR13R well I have that piece on the way from Jake but that makes sense too. I'll start the OE way and see where it gets me. Thanks!

That thing you were pushing on poking out the side of the timing cover was the upper timing chain tensioner

Ha! then why not use it to lift the motor! Thanks for the info. I figured thats what it was.

Ian - I've also done some more thinking and talking about the carb balance bar and after a trip to the hardware store I discovered that all of those threaded holes seem to be tapered so normal bolts don't fit. Still undecided on how to deal with that. Rubber plugs? JB Weld? Jake said he just tig welded the holes closed in his. The one hose fitting on the top is definitely for the vac to the brake booster so that's no longer a mystery. One on the bottom goes to the PCV and the other will get blocked off.

Again, alot of people just block the balance off, it makes it easier for tuning. you can get the older manifolds that are just plain with no balance and plugs for vac ports, Redline in Aus sell an aftermarket on also.

I’ll look into that aftermarket unit. Thanks!

Water pump, you need to find the water pump housing. The actual water pump is the same 18r to 18rg. Balance pipe, you can remove and blank the holes. Or keep it and only use the ports you need.

I feel like I have the right housing. I have 2 to choose from. The one with the bent return pipe on it to cross a hose over the front of the block seems like the right one.

Crankcase vent... IMO the best is an exhaust based crankcase evac system. I have it on one engine. Basically you weld in a check valve into the exhaust that draws a vacuum and run that to the valve cover and that sucks out the crap and blows it out the exhaust. Much better than allowing it in your intake system. IDK what water pump you have, but cast iron impeller is better than stamped steel... One other note. I just learned about a year ago about the 18R block and its oiling issues. Basically it has a flow problem and I'm looking for a larger oil pump. IDK if one can be adapted or not. One thing that some engines do is use carb jets to slow the oil flow in certain areas so that you get higher pressure in other areas. The 18R issue seem to be in the oiling of the crank, so maybe restricting the oil flow to the head would increase the pressure/flow to the crank. On some engines, I grind the oil passage ports to match the bearings for better flow to the crank. Maybe worth looking into. IMO a larger oil pump or dry sump would be a great option.

LOADS of info here! Thanks man. A good dual port catch can is starting to seem like the right solution for venting the crank case and head without putting any oil back into the engine via vac. Or maybe I don't know what I'm talking about there either :D Cast water pump impeller is go for sure. I only found one stamped impeller out of everything I have and pushed it aside immediately. The oiling issues will have to be what they are for now. I know folks routinely run coolers and also accusump to keep pressures up and I'll probably end up going that way eventually but I doubt I'll have the engine apart again until something goes seriously wrong.

Ian - I need a part if anyone has the water fitting for the back of the head to go to the heater core input.

Ian - and another topic to start from the video… MSD 6A… how do? :) Does the MSD replace all of the accessories currently strapped around the coil like ballast resistors and the like? Anyone ever installed one that can point me to videos or pictures and let me know about your experience?

Had 6AL on my old 18RG. Wired it right to the toyota magnetic pickup replaced the toyota ignition all together..with a blaster2 coil. Plugs gapped to .050"

Excellent! Another ignition question, I have a Petronix conversion in the RC dizzy I took out. Can I transfer that to the RG dizzy and expect it to do the job?

Ian - Here’s another topic from the video. Let’s talk about water pumps. I’ve now gotten intel from Jake that the 18rc pump is good to go for an RG and I’ve written Rick over at toyhead and asked about the RGEU impeller with the flange on it so I can run without a fan clutch. The only problem now is that I need a pulley to bolt on that flange… and I don’t know where to source it. Any ideas?

I’ll look at my stash and see if I have a spare pulley. - Jake

Also the W series both 40 and 50 are the same length. Drivelines are also the same on the cars from a 5 spd and 4 spd

Be careful not to put pressure on the valve cover with the chain. I’ve seen em cracked
@oioracing
@oioracing 4 месяца назад
Oh we definitely put pressure on that valve cover :) I’ll check and make sure it’s not cracked. As for the trans I figured it would measure out fine I just worried that it came from a pickup/motorhome application that it might have something different about it but I’m not so afraid of that anymore. If you have a bolt on pulley for the pump with the rgeu flange then I would definitely grab that from ya.
