After watching our video of the old John deere 440 Liquifire, one of our subscribers reached out to us to see if we'd be interested in taking a look at his 1972 Ski Whiz. this old sled is a real sweetie!!! and in great shape for its year. after a once over, a carb rebuild and some fresh go juice...this old tractor sled is up and rippin! I love these old sleds! 🍻

We used to put ski spreaders on old machines like that. They're about a 4" square piece of flat stock with a 1/4" drop-down offset in the middle (so it wouldn't raise the front end at all) They actually worked wonders for stability

My buddy's dad worked at Massey YEARS ago. We had 2 of them. I believe they were actually 292cc one lungers. Probably the only carburetor that I can rebuild blindfolded. Trust me, it'll really twist your brain for a long time if you flip flop that spacer gasket and diaphragm. Lots of good memories and 1000's of miles on them things. Definitely cables on the recoil, a frayed one one would remind you often. The good thing about the stance, I lost a bolt once on the ski, I was able to ride it home across the fields tipping it on edge until I got a bolt from the garage. There should be rubber strap keepers between the bogie wheels also. FYI... That is a handy bit of information there!!!! Great video!

Hey Pete, Ive been watching your channel for a while. I finally subscribed. Just to let you know on a trick I learned. Dried up, gooey plugged jets and fuel bowls. Its still dried up shit gas. Take a small soldering torch and heat your jets, and pilots and the clogged jet will shit out the turd. Its amazing. Take fine piece of copper wire and finish cleaning the orffice. You can take a dremmel with a wire bit and shine up the outside to make it new. Also burn out the fuel bowl and believe me it will burn cause it was once gas. take a scotch brite pad and clean the bowl. Burn the shit and its easier than waiting hours with carb cleaners. Brake clean will make it pretty again. Taking torch tip cleaners are fine, but when you have a pilot jet thats 34.5 and running a torch tip cleaner through can make it bigger and screw up your idle circut and making it run rich on idle and bog when you punch the throttle. Also another tip. Siezed bolts or broken bolts use candle wax. Heat the shit out of it and use a candle and melt it into the seized bolt. It will wick into the threads. Let it cool and extract. Repeat if necessary. Putting penetrants just make fires. Use sented candles itll make your shop smell nice. LOL

The torch cleaner works well for me. Back in 96 I went to play in the snow with my (at the time) girlfriends family, her dad had just gotten his hands on a 69 Polaris, one ride on that slow sled and I was hooked. Within a month I had a 79 Yamaha enticer 300. Been a motor sports guy ever since. No snowmobile currently but have several quads, a few three wheelers a dirt bike and my Polaris ranger. My 17 year old son has more than me. It is an addiction

In Huron county (Ontario) we had a 1972 while our neighbours 200m down the road had a 1970. We kids were envious of the White's (our neighbours) as they also had a wheel kit for their machine. Two wheels in place of the skis and a big driven balloon tyre under the track tunnel! We raced go carts and old motorcycles up and down the county road and they run their Ski-whiz. Our other machines were a 67 BoaSki and a 69 twin track/single ski Alpine. I cannot tell you whether this wheel kit was an option or after market. The hole in the gas cap was a fuel gauge; a spiral rod was attached to a float, it turned and moved a pointer under a clear plastic cover on the gas cap. Great videos you have.

Do you remember when these machines were called 'Massey Ferguson snowmobiles' and the 'Ski Whiz' label came later? Those bad-boys were built to last, albeit the MF brand like everything else back-in-the-day required some frugal 'tinkering' just a few years from the assembly line. Ski Whiz is on my bucket-list of must-have restored snowmobiles.

Seems like the needle retainer would need to be adjusted. Can't recall the spec. but I think .012 proud of the carb body , measured with a straight edge. So the button on the diaphragm opens it the right amount. Been a while since I've had one apart. Probably have an old manual laying around some where. These old sleds bring back some fond memories of a simpler time.

@NJP76
@NJP76 Год назад
I just wish we had more than a week or two of winter in Wisconsin anymore. A friend and I used to have a business working on old sleds and loved it. We would spend a lot of evenings wrenching on those old beasts, then tearing them up on weekends. Wintertime used to be fun around here. These days, we have to try and get as much riding in (that is IF the trails are open) as we can when we can, because the season is so short now. Yeah, I miss the 80's winters.

@NJP76
@NJP76 Год назад
@@stevenbaker9327 I can not disagree about the 60's and 70's winters. I was a kid in those days, and I remember winters when the snow would come in early November. It usually stayed until March and even April some years. It seemed like we used to get a lot more snow back then as well. Not so much of this rain and ice that we get so much of these days. I am well over 60 now, and I actually do miss the longer winters we used to have. I didn't actually get into snowmobiles until 1980, but from that time on, I have been hooked on them. Maybe it is just my perspective, but it seems like we had snow to ride on for more than a week or so back in the days. But then I guess I shouldn't complain too much. I got my five miles of riding in for the year already, LOL. Anyway, sorry if I am rambling here. I just miss the times when winter was winter here in Wisconsin.

Had one of these long ago as a 13 year old, old reliable but so slow. No electric start and an actual wrap around the pulley rope start since so much was missing from my machine. The hood was barely holding on and the carb would fill with snow at times but I always got home with it. Also had the 440 twin JLO, faster but so prone to melting pistons, bad design.
