I remember in July 1973, My dad bought new Schwinn 3 speed bikes for my sister and myself. My model was the "Speedster". I was only 8 years old. Schwinn was the name everyone knew. If you didn't have a Schwinn, you were nobody! I wanted a speedo on mine. It was this exact same 60 mph model. Put almost 4,000 on the odometer. Today, I refuse to put one of those boring LCD digital ones on my bike. I know they're simpler without a cable to attach. I found a NOS Sears deluxe speedo on Ebay for $50. Brand new, 0 miles and made in the USA! Mileage accuracy is spot on.
I recently got one on Ebay. I put it on my bike. The odometer works but when I am moving, the needle goes up and then down, up and then down as if it is skipping. Is it something wrong with the drive bearing? Or is it the speedometer? I tested the speedometer with a screw gun and it works seemingly. The Bearing is old, and has the gear for bearings (your drive bearing looked newer).
Hey, from the sounds of it, if the speedo isn't able to maintain it's needle height it is probably caused by the wrong gear ratio in the speedo hub. If you put a smaller front wheel on your speedo the wheel and cable would spin faster and the needle would stay in the correct position because of the magnetic charge being generated. That's my best guess. But if the drive hub and wheel are correct maybe the speedo is just gummed up and needs to be taken apart and serviced.
Oh by the way, do you know if the wire from the 13 dollar speedo will work with the vintage speedos? Its just a normal squared off wire at the ends. Have you tried it? because most of the speedos that I see on ebay dont come with a drive wire.
I gave the exact vintage speedometer. But I don't have two arms on the wheel hub pc. Guess its the arm for judging speed. Can this be replaced or is it needed. I don't want to replace this part with a digital speedometer. Please help. Thanks
Hey i have the same bike my bearings i think started wearing out they are making grinding noise. Where can i buy new ones to replace them? and what grease would you use for the bottom bracket
I have a question. My cable broke. So I got a new cable and when I installed it the drive wouldn’t engage when I pedaled forward But in reverse. Any idea what I did wrong?
Where can I find the cables for these speedometers? I have a 27 inch drive and that type of Schwinn speedometer. Just need that to complete my bicycle. Thank you!
They just don't make them like that anymore. You can find them cheap and not totally functional. I bought mine for $10 on ebay and fixed it with a little penetrating oil. $50 is a reasonable price for a working vintage huret / schwinn speedo.
heres the deal though. Ive bought 4 of those 13 dollar amazon ones and theyve all broken because there is very little room where the place where the rim connects to the struct or shocks. So i've had to use a dremmel to make the 13 dollar speedometer drive very thin, after that it works fine for a few days but then the inside starts slowly shredding and then it disconnects from the drive pin so I need to keep taking my wheel off and connecting them back. I see that some old speedometers have a VERY thing drive but I fear that if I buy such an expensive speedometer for my motorized bicycle that it either might break due to there being little room or it might not fit in that little room. Anyways, If I do buy one and it doesn't fit then I will probably have to go to my college and take the front shocks/structs/ whatevertheyare off of abandoned bicycles because I am done breaking speedo drives.
How do you fix the Huret speedometers? I took mine apart. The round file looking thing doesn't spin. the outer casing of it does spin and the needle moves but the gears don't turn.
