Pitt - Penn State 2 years played at Three Rivers Stadium ( The Confluence) 1975 and 1976 in 75 Penn State wins 7 -6 @ in 76 Pitt wins 24- 7 yo COMPLETE Undefeated Regular Season and Go to Sugar Bowl vs SEC Champs Georgia Bulldogs ( 10 - 1)
I was a sophomore at ND and in the student section at the northwest corner of the stadium. When Penick made the 85-yard touchdown run, it looked like he was running right towards us.
I grew up in San Francisco, and my family hated SC. I was 8 years old when this game was played, and I saw my dad and uncle elated at the outcome of this game. Thanks for posting...
I was so thrilled that we had some football last year. Sadly, Cfb isn't the same it used to be (I grew up in the 80s and 90s) and started my fandom in 88 when Dad, a 74 alum, asked me if I wanted to watch the Michigan game. After watching Ricky Watters return a punt, I was excited for every Saturday after.
What gets me is just the pared down look of the broadcast. The listing of the line in basic graphics with the skills players in pics that looked like they were taken by amateurs. No constant display of the score and other rolling graphics. So basic. So raw.
I have a Notre Dame pocket watch my grandfather found in the mud outside the stadium after a game in the 1920's. My grandfather was a Notre Dame graduate. The watch is in excellent condition. If anyone out there is interested in purchasing it, please let me know.
And he never yelled even one time, ever. These "Announcers" today are always yelling on nearly every play, like it was a Hail Mary to win the Super Bowl or something!
Not an ND fan, but I was at this game when I was young. I had good connections, so I was seated on the field bleachers on the North end zone in front of the student section. When Penick scored on that long run, he ran right toward me.
Fun facts - At Gilmour Academy (suburban Cleveland, OH), Eric Penick torched opponents on the ground. His lead blocker was a bruising fullback named Dave Janasek. Two weeks after the '73 USC game, the still-unbeaten Irish faced off against Pitt on the road, coming away with a 31 - 10 victory. It wasn't as easy as the score might imply. A freshman Panther running back named Tony Dorsett lit up the ND defense. However, in spite of 209 rushing yards, TD never crossed the goal line that day. In fact, the Panther's lone touchdown came on a one yard plunge by a bruising fullback named Dave Janasek!
@@timothymiller1783 One of my younger brothers went to Gilmour in the late 70s, but the rest of us went to the public high school. Penick was a multi-sport beast in high school. Gilmour captured the 1971 Ohio HS Div AA (medium size schools) State Track Championship. Penick won the 100, 220 and 440 yard dashes, racking up 30 team points for Gilmour. The next best TEAM score was 28 points! It's a pity his football career was cut short by a severe ankle injury his senior year at ND.
thats because this was before that stupid "no contact" after 5 yards penalty came into effect, a lot harder to pass back in those days, college follows the NFL rules, except for a few minor variations, and the nfl sold out in 1978 to get more people watching by making the game more "exciting" by giving the offense a big advantage in the rules
@@terrybangley2281 Everyone talks about parity in college football today. I am convinced that removing that one rule will immediately start to have said effect.
Clements came to Canada and had a great career in the CFL, first in a great 2 QB system , with Condredge Holloway ( of Tennessee, I think ). Anthony Davis came to the CFL too, but with little success.
22:35 Lynn Swann had one foot in (maybe) and maintained possession (maybe). The replay right after says he got the one foot in. But possession? Call stands in 2023, right?
Too bad Ohio State and Michigan couldn't be consensus National Champions in 1973.Instead it was Alabama based on regular season and Notre Dame after the Bowl games.Would have been a good 4 team playoff.
@@chuckcollins2349 too bad they played close to the vest in 2nd half against Michigan.Any points at all and they would have won Natty.Great team on both sides of ball
