Woody Hayes somehow got to work this game as a guest analyst for ABC, giving him a chance to see USC up close before playing them for the third straight year in the Rose Bowl. I'm sure he was crowing in the first half, but he sounded a bit concerned by the end. (USC won the Rose Bowl on a late touchdown pass from Haden to McKay, and then a two-point conversion to Diggs from Haden).
billsav57 I’ve been a Trojan fan since my freshman year at SC in 1958. I had the good luck as a graduate student to see both this ND game and the subsequent Rose Bowl. This year and these games have been cherished memories ever since. Fight On!
I know that over the years Ohio State has lost 3 or 4 games to USC by 1 point and made some bad decisions near the end of those games. At least they won 24-7 over USC in the Cotton Bowl a couple of years ago.
ABC tried an experiment that season in which a major college football coach would serve as a guest analyst during an off week for their team. Usually they were paired up with Keith Jackson.
@@cumulus1234 USC beat Ohio State 42-17 in the 1973 Rose Bowl. Ohio State returned the favor in the "74 Rose Bowl, won like 42-21. This season ended with the 1975 Rose Bowl where USC won 18-17.
Perhaps The 1 of My Best Memories of S.C. Football🏈 ✌️❤💛...IwasThisClose to Turn it Off..I Couldn't Believe they were getting a BeatDown by Noted Thier Lame...Then The Second Half Was #28 A.D. Fueled Which Inspired The Whole Team & Led To My Favorite Moment 🙂 of Seeing Little Kids..Teens...Cheer Leaders ..All The Players / Coaches From Noted Thier Lame..Go From Euphoria to "When Irish Eyes are Cryin😭"...
Me too. This is one of the first games I remember watching as a kid. This and the Game of the Century Nebraska at Oklahoma where Johnny Rodgers took the punt back. Two of the greatest games of all time. It's been gradually down hill since...
I could swear Woody Hayes was rooting for the Trojans. Never in my wildest dreams would I ever imagine that. This was Ara Parseghian's last regular season game. It's good he went out with the Orange Bowl win against Alabama, but this game basically ended it for him.
Per my memory,,, the game was quite entertaining no doubt, (especially the 2nd half). IOW,, when you run up to a 24-0 lead on your opponent,,,, you do not expect to lose the game period,,,, much less by some 31 points! Yeppp USC scored some 55 Unanswered points on the Irish,,, quite a barnyard shellacking,, to say the least.
I remember watching this game and couldn't believe what I was seeing.... The U.S.C. coach said at half-time: "We are taking the kick at half-time and we are going to score, score and score". That is what they did!!!!
In 1974 I was a senior at USC, and remember the short and warm walk from campus to the coliseum that day. I remember too how upsetting so many of us felt at halftime. Yet something began to happen as the teams returned to the field to begin the second half. It's indescribable, yet something was in the air: an almost electric sense of anticipation. Something was about to happen that was so powerful that it bled across time. I remember turning to a stranger on my right and saying, "Can you feel it?" and he simply said, "Yes." And then Notre Dame kicked off and Mr. Davis did what did. Moving right to left before me standing stunned above the 20 yard line he ran...into history. There will likely never be another football game like this.
I was 8 yrs old when I saw this game on ABC when it happened. Ktla Kcop Khj and KTTV used to replay this game alot over the years watched it every single time. But the day I remember most is watching this game and then War of the Gargantuas right after an 8 year olds ultimate dream!!!!!
I was a junior at ND that fall, and after coming into halftime up 24-6--especially after the little lift of blocking the extra point I think the best word to describe how we felt in the second half was 'bumfuzzled," before Bobby Bowden even ever came up with the word. Sensational performance by AD.
I listened to this game on the radio at work. After the first half, I almost turned it off. Almost. Pretty good recruiting by SC. Dave Farmer starts at FB, Ricky Bell and Mosi Tatupu are the backups. Attaway girls, 20:11!
It was a glorious day. I saw the hole open up for AD. I jumped up and yelled he's gone. Then we never sat in the 3rd qtr. My gf and I kissed after every TD. I got alot of smoothie that day.
I've been able to piece most of it together. There is another clip featuring Ray Scott as the play-by-play announcer in the "missing" second and fourth quarter footage.
