First before we get started, we all need to thank David Coolidge for this fantastic footage from March 1974. David is a client of ours, entrusting Pixcel and our ImageWorks department to transfer and restore his home movies. Along with his wife and two kids, the Coolidge family trekked to Orlando on the Amtrak Autotrain, spent their nights at the Polynesian Village and days at the Magic Kingdom.
Inside the film you will be treated to Small World, King Stephans Banquet Hall, the Mickey Mouse Review (nearly 3 minutes!), Peoplemover construction as seen from the skyway, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Polynesian pool, a quick glimpse of the wave machine, and at the VERY end, Bob-a-Round boats!

I was there in August of '74, a week after Nixon resigned. I remember ordering room service around 10 PM and not being able to handle the German chocolate cake; I guess I wasn't used to the Florida heat. I can still hear "If youuuu had wings" in my head.

Gilbert Matthews I was there August of ‘74 too! I was 8. I fell asleep at dinner at Cinderella’s Royal Table. I loved “ If you had Wings”. We stayed at The Golf Resort which is now the military hotel. Mousekeeping always put my Raggedy Ann doll somewhere fun. And they left mini rolls of peppermint lifesavers on the pillow.

I lived in South Florida back then and it didn't start getting bad with overpopulation till the late 80s early 90s, so I got out of there.

Today, 18 June 2024, is exactly 50 years to the day of my family's first trip to Disney. Been thinking about it and what brought me to look up "Disney 1974". From Jacksonville, we drove to Six Gun Territory the day before. After Six Gun, we drove down to Orlando that afternoon. I was only 7. The first time I would stay in a Motel. Was fascinated by the pool. Funny to think, it was a nice place...The Passport Inn on I-4 at 33rd St. It's now a Meth / Hooker hangout these days, I hear. We got to Disney as soon as it opened at 9. I researched and found it cost $17.50 for ALL FOUR of us??? You DID have to buy those Ride Tickets but still.... I remember it was VERY hot but I was so excited, it did not phase me. We rode everything. Longest line was maybe 40 minutes. Fairly early, we rode "Small World". LOLOL I still remember Mom saying, an hour or two later...I can't get that song out of my head!" We had a great time, saw the fireworks and left the Park at 11 PM. I remember watching the Magic Kingdom fade as we rode the monorail to parking. I was exhausted. The next day, we went to Cape Kennedy and then home that afternoon. It was a great trip. It bums me that I'm the last of my family. As I watch this, I see a lot of people and wonder who is my age and how many have passed. Bitter sweet.

Wow. People swimming in Seven Seas Lagoon gets me every time. And it was safe to do so in 1974, because alligators were an endangered species. What a change from today.

I grew up staying at Fort Wilderness campground in the 80’s so I do miss swimming in that lake, but from what I’ve read they stopped allowing it for a number of reasons. Yes, one reason being a habitat issue with a growing population of alligators there were a few alligator attacks over the years. It also had to do with raising bacterial concerns. Although Vibrio vulnificus infections are rare, it’s a naturally occurring bacteria in warm, brackish seawater and freshwater. It can be deadly and its presence worsened over the years with 36 cases and 7 deaths reported in Florida in 2020. So you have all these factors come together with more than 20 times as many visitors in the water than there were in 1970’s and 80’s, coupled with the fear of lawsuits and safety concerns, I kind of see why they came to that conclusion. Plus the growing general population is just too stupid and careless now to handle it. I mean, look at all the stories coming out of Disney Parks now, people are incapable of behaving like respectable adults now. Can you imagine letting these idiots run wild and swim responsibly in a lake now?

1974 was the first year I went at 10 years old. My mother's boyfriend took his sister and me without telling my mom - from Seattle! Their relationship didn't last afyer that lol.

This is one of my favorite retro Disney videos I've seen. I love the footage of the people swimming in the lake and the Bob-a-Round boats. I live in Florida and don't mind saying, I wish they would find some way to eliminate the alligators, so we could enjoy the waterways again. You can't even enjoy walking around a lake anymore without being afraid. We hear about them eating small dogs while people are out walking them, quite frequently, they take them right off the leash. It's not right. Can someone tell me what the Wave machine is that's supposed to be in the video, I've never heard of that?

Most Super 8 cameras shot at a standard 18 frames per second. Is this a different frame rate? Maybe 24?

these films all maybe have some stupid 15 or 30 second shot's which Sucks unless my home movie's

@@jaydenmontgomerysvhsarchiv5057 Keep in mind that home movie cameras back then only gave you a limited amount of film. You couldn't shoot non-stop for ten minutes to get an entire ride unless you had extra film at your disposal and it wasn't cheap. To get as much as three minutes of Small World and three minutes of the Mickey Mouse Revue is just astonishing by the standards of the day, especially with sound.
