Startup video of our recently completed refurbishment of a 1974 Norton Commando 850 Interstate.
Now sold!!
This is a USA import 1974 Norton Commando 850 Interstate with 7900 original miles. One owner bike from Louisana it had been sitting around for 30 years. We've refurbished the bike from a neglected state and replaced/overhauled what was needed - which was a lot. We have completely re-wired the bike with a Lucas cloth type harness and it runs on a single Mikuni with a Pazon Electronic Ignition.
Starts first kick and does not blow any smoke. Goes through the gears well and pulls as it should. Triple matching numbers - engine, frame and gearbox. Has original Interstate exhaust pipes but we have elected to install peashooter mufflers instead of the Interstate type.
Work Done:
- Front forks overhauled with new seals
- New front and rear tyres - Dunlop TT100's
- Replaced headlight brackets
- New headlight
- Front brake system overhauled with new seals, hose and pads
- Rear brake serviced
- New seat cover
- Switch gear overhauled with new parts
- New indicators front + rear
- Engine(and filter), Primary & Gearbox oils changed
- Clutch serviced with 3mm clutch plate installed for lighter clutch
- Oil tank flushed
- New kick-start lever and x-ring oil seal
- New main wiring and headlight harness (cloth type)
- New aftermarket tank and side covers
- New speedo drive
- New chainguard
- New Clutch cable
- New 750 type exhaust roses
- New mirror
- New front guard
- LED light bulbs fitted

The twin carbs are a total nightmare to fit to their inlet stubs and the air filter setup is a complete lash up. On my 1972 750 I have a single Mk1 930 Concentric and it has transformed the bike for the better! More torque and improved fuel consumption. Who wants to spend ages tuning twin carbs any more?

I understand that syncing twin carbs is too difficult for you but that doesn't make your single carb Commando better. As you refer to the two cap screws securing an intake manifold to the head as a 'total nightmare' and putting an air filter into a basket and securing it with 2 bolts as a 'complete lash up' fails to convince me that an owner with limited skills makes for a better Commando. Reducing the air/fuel mixture on a Norton Commando does not increase it's torque in the low, medium or high end RPM range. If you prefer supposed better mileage to higher performance that's your decision. My dual carb '72 Combat gets 55+ miles per imperial gallon. Good enough for me and I keep the acceleration and the torque that you lose.

Take off 1 carb and you get more torque. Hilarious. Another expert I assume.

Shame the dual carbs and the very functional Commando air filter are all gone. The original Commando acceleration and torque are gone too. Instead of losing performance it's better to learn how to sync the dual carbs.

They were long gone when we got the bike. If the new owner decides to convert back to original it's an easy enough job
