Thanks heaps for the wonderful memories Loscar. I owned the exact 850 Norton , minus the electric start, when I was 18. Hitting pubs and clubs with a beautiful loose woman on a Friday and saturday night was common . Firing up the machine at the end of the night amongst admiring bike enthusiasts before the ride home. Weekend rides through the country and hills. The feeling of pleasure and freedom at this stage of my life was immense. And now the only regret I have, as I wipe away the drool and tears , is that I sold it in 76 for $1100.!!!
Sorry for the delay, Tommy. I have liked your stories and the good memories of your golden youth. Thanks for watching my videos !! Best regards. Loscar✌️
Same story. No electric start. John Player factory paint. Best bike I ever owned. Sold it to a guy. He painted it black. Put in a Barnett clutch. Promptly blew the trans. Still makes me sick.
Loscar Motorcycles Beautiful Motorcycle, !!! The sound of these motorcycles, is Unique and unparalleled...is so exiting. It Brings me beautiful memories and great nostalgia, I am a senior now, 74 year old...I grew up with the sound of these british motorcycles, my father was a big motorcycle fan, but he loved the Germán BMW'S...and Indians and Harley Davidson, he had them all, my first bike was a single Cylinder BMW 250 cc I was twelve at the time, but I got to like better the British bikes, and my final choice was the Commando 750... didn't get to buy the 850 though....well congratulations, that is one beautiful Motorcycle....😎😎😎
You did it again. It was worth waiting for the navigation of another beautiful machine from the past. It's so nice. I can't even put it into words... I think it's probably maybe even better than when it came from the factory with your special touch...Todays' motorcycles could learn so much from these past memories. Sometimes I think now that I'm 70 years old, maybe I'm a little old--fashion...Then I see these motorcycles you have turned into a vision from another era, and I feel young again. Thank You. 6/23/22.
Thank you very much Tom 🙂 The damn hot exhaust on the right was pretty embarrassing, but the rush to show the video betrayed me. After a long work to check the ignition timing, carburetion, etc ... etc ... and everything was correct, I discovered that the bluish color was caused by a stupid defect in the chrome !!! I switched to a new tube and never blue again. Thank you for your comments. My best wishes. Loscar✌
Fraud. That bike is dominated by essential parts from, if not wholly a product of, Colorado Norton Works. You can see their logo on the engine. Check out their site. Not cool. coloradonortonworks.com ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Px8ChhG0tg8.html
Brilliant job- I really only became aware of these bikes in 72. If I’d been able to get one, I’d have brought it to someone like yourself for a full evaluation test.
You are obviously very proud of that Commando, I think you are totally justified to be that proud, that bike might be the best Commando there ever was!
Not often you see such nice touches and features on a rebuilt bike, at lot of time its just new bits bolted together, this looks like you've thought about how its all going to work and ride.
Doggone it, Loscar, now I have to get another keyboard ... I just drooled all over this one, and it's all your fault! ;) Incredible, absolutely magnificent!

Considering all of the nice modifications I would have thought that a new pair of Mikuni carbs would be in order. The polished instrument holders look great but would have kept the original front brake reservoir and switch gear. Always loved the volt meter on the headlight shell.
Hola Carlos, me encanta esa moto, una pregunta, sabes si ese encendido pazon sabes si lo hay para monocilindricas para poder ponerlo a una sanglas 400f monocilindrica?
way ahead of any MC mfg. in its day, from rubber mount eng (iso mount) to disc brakes and oil cooler.to 5-speed trans, they ran as well as handled great and stopped on a dime. what co.would use a crome moly frame, Norton and BSA both did.why they went out of business is the same reason triumph, bsa, and others did it cost money to retool and modernize
Magnificent restoration! One question, and it’s not intended as a negative. After all these decades why haven’t they figured out how to make header pipes not turn blue from the heat?🤔🤔🤔
Yes, the cause is usually due to the heat of poor fuel or bad ignition. In this case it was the defective chrome. The pipe was changed and perfect. Thanks for asking
Great job. Corbin Gun Fighter seat, electronic ignition, belt primary drive, CNW electric start, improved front brake & many other small mods. Where did the left handlebar switch assembly come from? Did you upgrade the Isolastics to the Mk III version?
Hi Charles, Handlebar switches are current components that can be found in any aftermarket and yes, the isolastic ones are the adjustable type. A pleasure and thanks for your note. Best wishes Loscar👍
When I was a young guy my friends and I all rode European bikes. One of the guys had a 750 Commando and whenever we went on rides it involved regular stops to pick up bits that had vibrated loose and fallen off. The worst offender in this regard was the Commando. My Triumph was the number one oil leaker and the other guys all had their own issues that came with owning a European bike back then. We all admitted that each bike had its own "character" defined largely by those very issues.
Hello Fhillip. Yes, that shade of blue is very striking. With the old point system there could be a difference between the ignition cylinders, but this one is electronic. It can also be due to poor carburetion, which would cause the damn color. After many checks and revisions the cause was faulty for chrome on the exhaust elbow!!!😩 Thank you for commenting and watching my videos. Loscar✌
At this 850ish size, the bottom end was a bit too close to it's limit, however, a beautiful, architypele British roadster. If you liked this, you'll love the Moto Guzzi, V7, 850 Special in it's latest 2021 iteration and l would suggest better in every department except the forks.
Hi Anthony. The starter housing on the Primary casing is CNW = Colorado Norton Works, however, the starter itself looks different to the CNW starter on my friend's bike. Maybe it's a different CNW starter model. The casing is definitely CNW.
Commandos usually have a bit of a gallop at idle, largely due to weak inconsistent spark from Lucas points ignition or Boyer electronic with 12 instead of 6 volt coils. This appears to have the Colorado Norton Works coil and probably the Tri Spark ignition, since most of the after market goodies here seem to be from their offerings. It's also idling a bit faster than typical.
@@howlerbike While I can't say mine galloped, it did have a mod of the day which was "K-Mart" coils. After a while I did install a Boyer unit although idle was the same. A nice mod was a single 34mm Mikuni from Brian Slark's British Marketing.
@@lorimcquinn3966 I haven't tried the manifold thing myself but a friend of mine did it using a Mk 2 Amal and it worked really well! I never bought anything from Brian but he was very active in the Norton Owners Association and contributed many technical articles to the newsletter over the years.
@@howlerbike Yes, Brian is top notch. I believe he's affiliated with the Barber Museum now. The Square Amal sounds good. I ran a pair on my 1979 Bonneville w/ Burak Bye Products jetting kit. Very impressive to say the least.
Great memories here to , 1989 a friend GAVE it to me while we were stationed at Diego Garcia , he was attached to a S.A.S squad ,heading home and was afraid to take it home cuz he didnt ask his wife if he could buy it ,so he left it with me . FOR FREE ! Best wishes to Walter , I couldnt afford the duty on it so I did the next best thing ,I smuggled it in !
Those exhaust turned nice and blue while we watched. Ever think of putting a fan on to help cool U'm? love the bike but an old fart like me could due with out that back round din somebody calls music. Also when you get ride of that crap din I would be able to hear those melodic pulses a little bit better aye what love the sound of that old English iron .Not bragging but here goes,Owned a triumph bonie 1966 vintage in 1966 owned a Norton commando in 1971 I believe it was a 1970 s model with the upswept pipes on one side ,Hardley see them any more.
Hahaha!! Yes, with music I think you are right 😩 The blue of the right tube, after checking the ignition, carburetion, etc. the cause was a defect in the chrome of the exhaust pipe.... and it was new !! I'm really sorry for the rush to get the video out with that lousy blue. Thanks for your note and greetings. Loscar 👍✌️
I fitted stainless exhaust pipes to my 750 Commando, so no "bluing", which I think was a pity on this immacualte machine. Also to my Goldie, for that matter. Not expensive.
After the war, the Brits trained to build Spitfires and such went to work building things like this. Then their spoiled kids took over and everything went south in the 70's.
Hi Jim. Yes, excess heat is usually caused by poor combustion or delayed ignition. After checking the carburetion and electronic ignition, the cause of that horrible blue color, was the damn bad chrome!!!! A new exhaust pipe was the solution. Too much of a hurry to mount the video🙏😌 Thank you for your comment and best regards. Loscar👍✌
Probably the best looking Commando I have ever seen. Superb...BUT...it would have looked just that bit better if you had painted the barrels SILVER...Trust me...the Commando engine looks perfect with silver barrels (an original feature) and it would really work with your silver and red colour scheme!. Thanks for showing though...PS it's running a touch lean or retarded on the RHS...the exhaust pipe (header) is far too blue..."Solvol Autosol" might restore it somewhat after sorting the problem. As regards the silver barrel, you can see what they look like here: www.classicbike.biz/Norton/Brochures/1970/1971Commando.pdf
That`s beutiful, they were very well engineered. By the time i could afford one I`d been seduced by a 450 Ducati and then a Moto Guzzi. LM It looks like the right cylinder is running a little hot,
Hello Paul The hot exhaust pipe on the right, after checking the ignition timing, the carburation, etc....etc.... is caused by a defect in the chrome!!! I changed for a new tube and never blue again. Thank you for your comments.
ronald miller Most US vehicle inspection station personnel do not realize that old bikes like these came with blinkers. I thought Nortons came with them starting in 1973 with the 850’s.
