Real world fuel economy test of a 1975 F250 while hauling some weight around! The truck has a 390 FE motor w/C6 automatic thru 3.7:1 rear gears. I'm using the truck to haul scrap metal to the metal recycling center. I will fuel the truck up beforehand, then drive the scrap to the metal recycling plant and then drive back to the fuel station to refill the fuel tank and see how much fuel the truck consumed to make the trip. Will the ole F250 crack double digits? We'll see.

For reference, my '68 Ford F-100 with a stroker 427 (449) and a C-6/three speed auto gets 8-9 MPG. It hurts, but it's fun! I'm also running Edelbrock EFI...not sure I like it or not, but it's there!

When it comes to old vehicles and fuel efficiencies. Engine wear and when was the last full rebuild is very important. I remember an old top gear segment where they took some old cars out and worked out what the mpg and then put em on a dyno. One of the cars was down to 40% HP compared to how the vehicle came new. Valve timings and compression loss are probably two biggest factors.

I miss my 73 f250.. stock 390 with a fairly small holley 4 barrel on it i used to average 15mpg and i thought that was amazing. I miss that truck so much

Nice truck, thanks for sharing. It is interesting that my 2011 powerstroke runs an average of 14 mpg no matter what laded, towing, bareback whatever the case. Bot much improvement in nearly 40 years. Love the truck tho!

That sounds about right for how the truck is outfitted, I've got an 05 F-350 that gets about ten mpg with about six hundred pounds of two four wheel drive axles in the bed. I drove from L.A. to "New River, NC" in a 62 chevy half ton and made 18 mpg all the way, back in the early eighties. I've got family out in California and Washington state and I've done the cross country trip many times, anything over ten in a full sized truck with a load is generally good in my book, thanks for sharing this!

Yeah, I honestly was not disappointed with the result. it's a big heavy truck with gearing intended to be a workhorse. 18 mpg's in a 1962 truck is awesome!!

Nice Matt! Reminds me of my 1976 f150 with a 400. I put some performance things like headers, intake, carb, and updated electrical and i got around 15 mpg.

Wow! That’s pretty good. That sounds like a cool build too- I’ve never had a 400 but have always thought it would be neat to get one and hop it up a bit for a truck(or a big car)

I have a 72 F250 with a 390 and 4 speed. I am getting it road worthy at this time. It has a gear vendors overdrive that is not wired up. And no instructions or documents. I saw your video on your GVOD. I'm going to contact them for the install kit/module. You should put one on your truck!

The gear vendors will be nice to have with your truck- it really makes these old haulers a lot more flexible!! You'll have a lot of fun with the gear-splitting too, especially with that 4-speed! As for my F250, its something i'm considering. The 3.7:1 gear ratio is great for pulling heavy loads but that 390 is howling if i take it onto the freeway- 70 mph is ~3000 rpm

I had a 1971 Ford F250 with a 390. It got 89 miles to the tank full..lol. it had a 21 gal tank.

< 71 F250 crewcab 4x4 6200 lbs empty. FE 390 got 5 to 6 mpg. Its still a work truck and I drive it hard. Put in a very built 300 I6 and got 8 to 13 until it came apart. Rebuilt the 390 and was getting 6 to 7. Replaced the 500 cfm eldecrap with 570 holley street aveneger and after getting it working correctly it is very noticably better gas milage. I havent measured it but I suspect 8 maybe 9 ? ....

It got about what i thought it would get. My 77f150 4x4 reg cab long bed with 351m and 3.50 rear end gets 10 regularly and if i drive mindfully ive gotten 12.

Yeah, these old haulers can be heavy drinkers. i actually used to have a full size Bronco 4x4 with a 351w and 3.50 rear and it too generally got 10 but could get 12 if you did a long trip and stayed out of the throttle.

Noticed lots of idling. I do agree with the rest of the comments. Can't really get an accurate number with one sample. The funny thing I noticed with my old 460 powered ford f350 tow truck is the mileage really didn't change much loaded or unloaded. Then again, it's pretty flat where I live.

Your truck did well for the setup. Look into changing the jets on the carbarator and bowl jets to one size smaller depending on where you live. Jegs and summit sell the tool and kit together in one package. You could see 16 mpg on the other jets. Modern spark plugs can help too, but be careful( no champions, E3s work very well). Use Marvel Mystery Oil in the gas to help the top valves stay cleaner. Use it also inthe oil to clean any sludge from old oil out. Other than that, it is what it is. A TRUCK!

I'm going to experiment with re-jetting the carburetor, mostly just to see if there is a little performance on the table. I'm sure the thing could use an ignition component tune-up too. The truck had sat in a field for at least 5 years when i came along and dragged it home. All I've done to the truck was install a brake master cylinder, a new accelerator pump diaphragm in the carb, and a fuel filter, then added fresh gas into and she came right to life and I've put a few hundred miles on the rig since the revival.

one last change. put half inch bigger exhaust on it and NO CATYLITIC CONVERTER. lose the smog pump and install electric fans. That all you have left to do. when engine requires rebuild, be sure to match intake gaskets to the heads and manifold. Don't forget the exhaust side. port and polish appropriately. it can wake that motor up and give you better efficiency all around. Its an old truck, not a Prius.

You really need a larger sample size. Take an average of 3 full tanks worth. Also, will be worth the effort to check that the speed-o calibration is sill good with the tire outside diameter and rear gear, can make a significant difference.

Ehhh maybe for a different video. You definitely don’t need to drive 600 miles to get a good idea of the fuel economy of your vehicle- that’s a little overkill. There’s no perfect way to do a real world test- there are just too many uncontrolled variables. I repeated my test and got essentially the same result. Also, I verified the accuracy of the odometer before the test- it’s accurate. Thanks for watching it and I dig the feedback!

Mine is a '73 f350 super camper special with the 390. It's awful on gas, I mean truly awful. Mine only has one tank and its from a bronco so its small, I never pass a gas station. Worth it tho, my truck is beautiful, so is yours. Save them all!

Yeeaah, i can relate to the one fuel tank situation. THis F250 does have a second fuel tank but it leaks and needs to be replaced so right now just running off of the rear fuel tank. Not a lot of range.

I have a 76 F250 with a 390 FE as well, rebuilt once around 20 years but sat fir 10 years, I am the second owner, I just replaced the carburetor with a holley 4160 vacuum secondary and it responds quite sharply, I believe 11.3 is very good, in 1975 gas was around 75 cents during the embargo, still manageable and even today at 4$ it's not a big deal. You want 35mpg...then get a smart car...you want a working vehicle stick with the torqueey truck and let it make money for you.

I agree with you. For a heavy duty truck, I’ll take 11.3 all day. I like the Holley 4160 carb - good all around performing carb and easy to work with.

A friend of mine has a Nissan Titan and he gets 13 mpg. So 11 mpg is not bad at all for a 390 FE

Nah, there are actually a lot of good reasons to have a clue of what kind of fuel economy your vehicle is getting- especially an older one. Unless you just don't drive it ever, then sure yeah- it doesn't matter much.
