This 1976 Chevrolet C20 Pickup Truck has been in my family for over 45 years and now it's my turn to take care of it for a while... and I'm thrilled!
I'll take you for a full walk around of the rig and then go for a drive to showcase all the personality this truck has.
Please take a moment to share any tips you might have for working on these trucks in the comments or places to source parts since I'm really new to working on this platform. I would like this to be a joined effort to modify and update the "hand me down" truck!
Share your hand me down vehicle story!!!
Thanks for watching, please make sure you are subscribed to ‪@AutoEdits‬
Also, if you can, head over to the www.amazon.com... if you start your amazon shopping from there it helps support the channel... so thanks!

My honest opinion: Do nothing to it... That truck is awesome!!! I don't mean "do nothing" literally; fix the a/c, freshen up the engine bay and components, check engine insides (top and bottom), oh! I know what you can do, modernize the suspension, especially if you're gonna lower it. "Do nothing" means don't cut it up or do any crazy body mods, but it's your truck, man do anything you want with it. Great gift, by the way!!!🤙🏻

My dad came into ownership of a '96 Cherokee XJ in 2003. I was only 7 years old at the time (just as old as the Jeep) but when I turned 19 that it became mine. By that time my dad was a bit fed up with the maintenance and there wasn't ever a real conversation about me taking it over. He ended up saying that if I was willing to fix it then I could have it. Those 4.0 inline 6's of that era were basically bullet proof so a little TLC, along with a transmission rebuild, and I drove it for another 30k or so miles. Towards the end of my ownership I started to feel the same way my dad did about the maintenance. I was happy I got to enjoy it for as long as I did, but I still beat my self up over getting rid of it. Maybe I'll find it again someday.

My dad has a 78 k10 shortbed right now that I work on and drive every chance I get. So simple to work on and so fun to drive. LMC Truck and Classic Industries are both good places to get parts from, especially period correct parts. And of course summit is a good place to start for parts for the small block. A new/refreshed carb, headers and exhaust will wake that engine up a bit. Also check timing, that can make it feel sluggish if it’s too far off. Love the truck and it’s history with the family, enjoy it!

If I owned this wonderful truck, I wouldn’t want to change it. Sure…I’d totally replace the exhaust, tune it up, and do up the suspension (watching you bounce up and down left me with the feeling I’d have to do something about that). I’m relieved to here from you that something CAN BE done to reduce the wandering steering; having driven these Chevys in the military, I find they do NEED improvement in that area. I’d splurge on rubber that is quieter and less tire-some on the ears. A fun afternoon could be spent removing, sanding and repainting cosmetic stuff such as the air cleaner housing and things like that. I’d do nothing to the cosmetics except under the hood. That would make me more familiar with what all is there so there are no surprises on down the road. Then…I’d load up Pinto and the rest of the family and enjoy a Sunday drive!❤ You are very fortunate to have this truckload of happy memories. Get out there and enjoy the heck out of it.

Nice truck. I’ve had a few square bodies, and grew up driving them back in the day. I personally say, tune up, drive it and enjoy it the way it is. - keep one original. (If it were me, I’d restore it to original - but keep dads wheels.) Enjoying the channel, I also have Jeeps, Yukon, pickups, etc.
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 Год назад
I grew up with my dad having a ‘75 C20 Camper Special, though his was a Cheyenne and in mint green. Watching you drive this brings back a lot of memories. Hood also has the high GVW, but he always has lumber racks and tool boxes in back, so it rode ok. Also with 16.5 wheels, which are getting hard to find tires for these days. Sadly 74-75 suffered from bad rusty issues in the bed sides as they collected water, even here in California. So the truck is now in the big scrap pile in the sky.
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 Год назад
Oh, I forgot to mention. You can put an LS in it. However, the swap has to include emissions for the year of vehicle the LS came from, and then a referee has to sign off on it. You can also use a GM smog legal crate engine, which makes it much simpler, though more costly.
@AutoEdits
@AutoEdits Год назад
Where should I look to see if that is happening on this truck?
@Stuka87
@Stuka87 Год назад
@@AutoEdits The rust? Is above the rear fender openings. It’s a double wall design. Water was able to get in, but there was no way for it to get out. So it would just sit in there. I can’t recall which year GM fixed it in. I thought it was 76. But 78 also comes to mind. I will need to see if I can find some info on it.
@bcmandel
@bcmandel Год назад
Love the truck, you can still LS swap it in CA. Easiest way is a CARB certified crate engine. Junkyard stuff would be doable, just more work. Either way that truck is a clean survivor.

Love the old square body's . I have had a few over the years and wish I would have kept one of them . I would pretty much leave it alone except for some 50-state legal exhaust , refresh the engine with a cam , headers , intake , and fuel injection all 50 state legal though since you live in California . Maybe update the suspension like shocks , springs etc. I'm looking forward to see what your vision is Jason . Congratulations on the new to you ride.

Here is what I would recommend: For the engine, get an EFI kit and see if you can get it going on the original mill Headers and exhaust to get that killer sound from a GM Push Rod V8 As far as suspension, definitely lower it and stiffen it up a little bit.

What a great truck! I love square bodies, my first vehicle as a 14 y/o kid back in 1994 was a 73 K10 short bed. I really love the early squares, my first suggestion would be to find an OE style grill for it. I think the white paint is a nice canvas for maybe some pinstriping, at least on the tailgate, and a mild drop would look great. I wouldn't go too crazy with it, not with it being a family heirloom like that.

And the hood isn't bent! Wow! Step-dad must've lubbed the hinges. Good job! My father-in-law had a mid-80's C-20 with a 4 speed with granny first, so basically a 3-speed for normal use. I had it loaded with stuff moving from one home to another. I went around a turn a little fast, but the thing handled like it was on rails. I owned an '81 Toyota pickup which alway liked to twist its rear end going around corners; so, my perspective may have been a little skewed. I loved that C-20; though, the clutch was a bit much. You really had to stand on it. Again, the Toyota had a very light clutch. Your C-20 is in great shape. I don't really have any suggestions for you. I love them the way they are. Though, I imagine a C-20 with a long bed being lowered would look kind of weird, well, if you go too far. Interested to see what you do with it no matter what.

I'd say just restore it or turn it into a lowered cruiser. Love the old square bodies. Miss my dad's 79 Cheyenne. Wouldn't mind get another, but unfortunately the reg cab doesn't work too well with everyday use.

This truck in good shape, I think if you want to do something update without take the spirit of this era of truck, give it overhaul for engine and update engine with some decent parts little chrome near engine coating for the down side & more classic look front and rear

I have a 1976 Chevy C10 truck it was my grandpa's my Grandpa gave it to my dad my grandpa get to me my truck needs work but it's still a good running truck I love it and I cannot wait to drive it on the road it still has the original tires on it I just put any speedometer cable in it I am looking forward but you're going to do to your truck to I think you should restore the motor and put new fuel in it and give it an oil change and new exhaust pipes.

Nice truck! That said if it has the dual saddle bag style fuel tanks.. the trucks were recalled ... In lieu of doing a collection of them, they paid $800. To take them off the road. Due to impact explosion from T-bone accidents. So I imagine if that were to happen, insurance will not pay. Possibly not pay for any comp. claim . Best of luck in your project. I rebuilt most of my 78k20-3/4T4x4, but floor is all but gone to rust. A project for another day.

Also wanted to add... The quadrajet carb ... The float has a tendency to absorb water , sitting long periods.. change that out while doing any tune up. Before rebuilding the whole carb. The butterfly valves also wear out and they allow extra air into carb. Compensate with air mix.

You probably won't do it.. But I would leave that truck as it is. Maybe fix up the interior and get some oem parts for the engine bay...but that's it. Nice truck 🙂

I'm enjoying it as is for the time being for sure... needs overdrive to be practical on the freeway.

We had many of these growing up if I remember right I have had 4 myself 2 and 4wd here is my suggestion like you said need a carb and fuel system cleaned does it have the height distributor if not change it with a 103000 miles on it I might consider doing a cam and lifters not sure what California will let you do and oh yeah fix the valve cover leaks you know there leaking lol besides that drive it maybe in the future make it ride and drive better and maybe think about finding an none computer controlled 700r4 to put in it to get overdrive but that is me either way cool truck

If it was my truck, I would keep it like it is. Old trucks like that shouldn't be lowered. They don't look good lowered, in my opinion. I would, however, maybe get the motor gone through and maybe rebuilt to give you more power. I have my dads old 97 5.9 Dodge that I'm trying to get back on the road. It's a great looking old truck.
