Wood on the ceiling was called 'Aspenite', my dad worked at a plant that made it up in Hudson Bay Saskatchewan Canada where we're from. Modern version of it is OSB (Oriented Strand Board) and it's what they sheet houses with these days.
It's pronounced "gar-ring" NOT "jeer-ring"...Kim Gerring started the entire Van Conversion Industry in Elkhart Indiana in 1972. He was my life long friend, my brother-in-law, and an amazing individual. He just passed away this past Sunday (3-10-19) . Innovator, creator. Will be missed immensely.
Blake, thanks so much for sharing. We had a "HeadRest" van when I was a kid. It was very similar to your van - although a little different in paint and interior layout was slightly different. I remember the "HeadRest" design was carved into a piece of wood near the bar area. Would love to know where that van is today. Super Cool! :)
Ok I'm first up for the next owner :) You have to tell me first. Beautiful van you are awesome for sharing and enjoying this huge part of Americana. We had a 1978 Dodge conversion van when I was young and will always be fond remembering our adventures in it.
@D O B My original 1977 no-window van was stolen recently and I'm trying to prove its value to my insurance company. Would you mind contacting me at DonnaWilliamsOnline@gmail.com to discuss a couple of pieces of information I'm looking for regarding the '75-'77 Chevy vans. Thanks.
The 1977 Chevy Van was the only one to have the newer side emblems and "CHEVROLET" badge on the rear door AND the 1971 grille. For 1978, that would change to the same grille with the dual headlights and eggcrate grille used on that year's pickups.
Damn straight the zbart saved it. Probably never saw winter salt either. Can't believe converter left bare press-board in the ceiling! Awesome Chevy Dude
@D. B. - Vintage My original 1977 shorty van was stolen recently and I'm trying to prove its value to my insurance company. Would you mind contacting me at DonnaWilliamsOnline@gmail.com to share some information with me regarding comparable pricing? Thanks man.
