In this video, we detail the woodgrain on the wagon! In one of our recent videos, we asked for suggestions on what products to use. There were many comments, but each stated a different product. So we put your ideas to the test! Watch the video to find out what product we ended up choosing. Please remember to like, share, and subscribe. Thank you for watching!

When I was a kid we had a 72 mercury wagon, white with woodgrain sides, and we used brown shoe polish, the paste that came in a small tin, worked great and hid any scratches

seems to me I remember under the Appearance section of the owner’s manuals (the ones found in the glove compartment) mentioned do not wax the the woodgrain appliqué - flood the painted surfaces with cold water to loosen dirt and grime - check that section out - Also I suggest making an ebay search for both the Chassis Service Manual and Body Service manuals (2) - these manuals were published by Chrysler Corporation and provide the very best detail on every aspect and system of these great cars and will prove invaluable in your restoration work

That’s a great tip, thank you! I do have the owners manual, but not the service manual. I’ll have to look for one.

Love your 1977 Town & Country! I just bought a really nice 77 from Arena motors in Columbus Ohio a few months back. I will get some videos up this spring once the weather gets better. I will put a link in your comments once I get the video up.

Hi Collin, nice demonstration. We use 303 Aerospace Protectant on the wood grain as well as the tires on our 1972 Vista Cruiser. The spray goes on quite easy, and lasts. It then beads water without being sticky or really attracting dust. I did not realize the fender skirts were made of fiberglass composite! Hope to see lots more of the big wagon featured!

You made the best choice -- Pledge! Some of the advantages that you didn't cover: its light, goes on easy, will wash off so you don't really have to worry about 'yellow waxy build up" (as they used to say in the TV ads!), won't attract dust like Armor All and you can touch it afterwards without getting it all over yourself. Waxing is not a good idea -- it gets in the woodgrain texture and looks awful, and depending on the type of wax used, can cause other appearance issues. And Crisco -- UGH! LOL Good job, gentlemen.

Woodgrain wrap is ez to replace your woodgrain with. Remove the old and replace with a heat gun. I've done 3 of my station wagons with woodgrain wrap. 2 of them are of the better glossy Chinese wrap. They turned out great. The glossy version looks better with shiny paint. It's ez to install, I wrapped many parts inside my 240D with what's left over from the roll. I always buy the biggest roll , you can replace all the interior wood to match the outside. The glossy aliexpress sold on ebay ATM seems to be that same thick kind I like.

the woodgrain appliqué (also known as DINOC manufactured by 3M) - my family owned several of these wagons including Plymouth Sport Suburbans - remember this material is NOT porous which means whatever you put on top of it - creams conditioners etc is just going to sit there - it is not penetrating the woodgrain to make it more supple. That said, the product I have always used is Mequiar’s Supreme Shine spray on - comes in a black plastic spray bottle

Yeah, and nothing is going to "condition" it like the cameraman suggested. At best you just fill in any microbumps and groves.

I professionally detailed cars for 24 years. I always hated when I got a woody wagon as there really wasn’t much you could do to the woodgrain to improve it. Once it was badly faded it was all over.

Any silicone based product will work well. It's just simulated woodgrain made out of vinyl decals, same as any cheap furniture....which is why Pledge works well.
@dave1956
@dave1956 2 года назад
I used to buff it like I did the paint, obviously being careful not to get hot enough to burn it. Then I would use an old product called “Ardex” that was a vinyl top dressing. It would dry completely which the products you are using don’t. Armorall washes off the first time you wash the car. As far as worrying about damaging the vinyl, it’s already been through 45 years of the elements, other than something like paint thinner I doubt that you are going to damage it.

the problem with crisco will be the long term affects...oils will gegrade the coloring and cause cracking...the best thing to use would be something silicon based like black magic tire shine...however a clear coat may work best as long as it isn't too evasive to the vinyl causing it to melt...they do make interior spray paint for vinyl, so if they make an interior clear coat, that would be ideal...

303 is good stuff and easy to use. You can also try shine-keeper, it's for armstrong floors. Tough stuff and dries hard. Available at Home Depot. Comes in a gallon and you can knock down with water. Don't make this car perfect, just preserve it and enjoy it.

I thought Crisco was for pie crust! I know what the faux wood grain was meant to represent, but when I look at cars from 40 years ago or more, I have to wonder what the designers who created these vehicles were thinking and what their buyers thought when they selected a “woodie” wagon.

as you probably already know the 1977 Town & Country wagons were the last large station wagons ever produced by the former Chrysler Corporation - it was truly the end of an era in beautiful and innovative styling and engineering - Chrysler Corporation was struggling to survive when these great cars were being produced - they were very comfortable cars and were stunningly beautiful - btw, the black painted aluminum trim piece that stretches the width of the car at the base of the tailgate window was poor design in my opinion - it scratches fairly easily and is vulnerable to damage when loading and unloading items in the rear - be careful of this and use a padding or cover of some type to protect that trim when loading and unloading

I'm far from expert......but this is the internet....LOL >> Vinyl has components in it to make it flexible (plasticizers). Besides UV, some chemicals and oils can slowly break those down. Pledge has some things in it like silicon oil that may or may not be a factor. Good news is even if so it would probably take years. I can say I've used products with silicon oil on black bumper covers and they lost a lot of their luster and blackness within a few years. Had to keep them coated. Also a piece of trivia: Folks from the generation around the age of my parents and especially grandparents lived through the depression and famously used cheap products for all kinds of unadvertised things. E.g. - cheap dish soap like Palmolive for shampoo. Much more lather in just a drop, etc. LOL Also, Crisco shortening for wood furniture especially unsealed wood. It's not bad for that I gotta say.
@theunskilledmechanic
@theunskilledmechanic 2 года назад
