This was found in the alley, someone had thrown it out with the trash. All it needed was a new belt and cleaned and oiled, and it's ready to last another 30 years.
i got a JCPenny vacuum as a wedding present in 1982. it lasted 15 years and ever since i have not found anything close to one. watching this made me really miss it
Nice! always nice to find something vintage in the trash. its like "hey free stuff! " seems like a great vacuum. i would like to get one of these old Hoovers when i get a place of my own.
Great resto of a groovy '70s Hoover. The 'Elite' U4109 was brought out at the same time as the plastic-based 'Elite' U4103 in 1978. Besides the hood color difference, I think its outer bag was larger. Not sure if there were other contrasts.
Cleaned up real good and looks just as good as it sounds :) These old Hoovers were indeed built to last. I got a 1966 Hoover Portable that still works fine to this day. Cleans up fur better than our modern Kirby Vac does. I gotta post a video of it some day soon.
The styling of that absolutely screams 70's. Love it. Some bellbottoms and disco music and you pretty much got it "maid". Love the orange one also, I wonder if they ever used that on the set of Match Game back in the day... It comes as no surprise seeing that still work with just the tiniest bit of maintenance. The other day I was walking past a recycling center, and there was a home theater piece, LG, just sitting there. Along with its matching subwoofer. I left it there. You almost don't find anything worth picking up that's thrown out anymore! Years ago, "scrappers" used to go around, pick up (what others would call "junk") things like this, fix them up, then sell them or have a "garage sale" and sell them that way. Now they just want the metal!
This model of Convertible ran from 1977 (and yes yours is early) to 1979. There were two variations of this model, yours, and then one that was the same color, hood style, bag, handle, motor etc..but stated "Convertible Elite" on the front lable, and also had a plastic base (Hoover discontued the metal base in late 1978). so the reissued model was the first of the plastic based Convertibles also. This was the TOL model, followed by one non headlight type A Convertible, and then below that was all type C bagged convertibles
Mine is a "Hot Rod" since mine needed a set of carbons and an armature i was given a high performance round handle model motor, from a U4307. I made some wiring modifications and its now one of the two Daily Drivers
ok i have a question i have a eureka vacuum that looks like that and has the beats as it sweeps as it cleans brush roll. so what is going on here? are they made by the same company, or is somebody a copy cat
I just wanted to say and share being a vacuum expert. That Vintage Hoovers are one of the best today than the new junk we have today. But when it comes to which vintage vacuum cleaners from the 60s-80s are dominate and the omega over all, its the Kirby!. The Kirby company was first established in 1885, and Hoover company was established in 1907. Just stating the Kirby has a bit more power and performance than most vacuums ,and has more perfessional cleaning than Hoover-1907,Eureka -1909 Electrolux -1910. In the end, I really enjoyed the video, Always will be a fan of Kirby and Hoover ,Electrolux.
My grandmother had an earlier version of that vacuum with no headlight. Also I think it filled up the bag from the bottom. I think they got it sometime in the early 70's. My vacuum is a Sharp Twin Energy upright that I bought new maybe 12 years ago. It received rave reviews back then for being durable and seems to live up to those comments. Still I always figured it was probably made in China but I just went to look and lo and behold it was actually made in Mexico!! Maybe that's why it's lasted and shows no sign of giving up the ghost any time soon. The only thing that sucks about it is the bags for it aren't very common`and I either need to order them online or get then from a vacuum specialty store where they get top dollar for them.
+tallboyyyy Spats probably has it :-) And yeah, it seems vacuums have become really bad in the last 10 years or so, my mother still uses her Dirt Devil from the 90s, which is only her second vacuum ever. First being a Convertible she had from 1975 until 1995 or so.
My Family worked at Hoover's Main Plant In North Canton,Ohio for 4 Generations. The Vacumns were built to last and sold many times at cost ,because the Profit was in Attachments, Replacement Bags, and Belts. All that Changed with Maytag's Takeover and has gotten worst under Techtronic Industries.
I think you have the belt on the wrong way because the fan should be spinning clockwise when you spun the roller the way you did. If you look on the plastic base convertibles, they have a diagram by the bottom plate.
Oh, I didn't realize it. I do have a 7 year old Windtunnel Electronic Bagless Canister that has the turbo brush Made in Mexico, and I also found out that the rest of the vacuum is Made in China. It has cracked plastic parts that I taped up, but it still runs.
+Tim Joseph I think TTI still makes the Hoover Guardsman and the original model Steam Vac cleaners with Spin Scrub just the same way as American Hoover was making them, right down to the parts.
