I would not be quite so negative in the appraisal of the Rover. All that rust can be replaced. Many YT's take a far worse chassis than this and do the bodywork with self made panels.It would be quite a project.It could also be quite satisfying to see it come back to life and use. Sadly the P6 is not that simple this car is rotten to the core I bought it as a donor car and as sad as it is I will not be spending 15K to fix this one up so sadly it's spares only

Good to see young fellas showing an interest in these vehicles, it makes a refreshing change from the usual lemmings that you see and endure on a daily basis, some of that corrosion would terrify the living shit out of me and I'm ex motor trade 1991 to 2008 😁
Shame. There cant be to many of these left! Another car of nostalgia from my child hood that one day I was going to own when I grew up. As a child the next door neighbour had one a V8 with the spare wheel mounted on the boot lid and on that basis I was having one. Never happened, probably wont now either. Still its nice that RU-vid is a thing so you can go on the journey with others. Good work keep it up.
Sometimes the grit and salt they put on the roads every year during the cold winter months can really take it's toll on these older non galvanised cars - Sadly this is the case here ! - A car like this is best used for parts to fix other good cars which are structurally sound.
I think it's not that bad.its very old. Some of the cars I've worked on have taken me weeks to fix at 12 to 14 hours a day welding. But it's down to you. If you can't face it,fair enough! Also, there will be more. When you start undoing things you find more and think, "oh my god"! I did a Triumph 2000 years ago and wished I hadn't! Great video.
Great video. Good to see John. You really don't have to justify yourself. You're doing a great job. That car does need to come off the road forever with rust like that. Loathe and despise. Bring back Lucas. Sadly in New Zealand we still scrap much better cars
We really should have some kind of exchange program going on with NZ & Oz, I mean, you`ve got loads of great, rot free shells sitting around that we want, & we.. Ur.. Have.... Um... Let me get back to you on that...
@@MrPabsUk i agree since i brought mine i could have brought 3 others for $500. But i havent the space. People are scared of them here. For no good reason. Modern cars are just as complicated and p6s are can be vey reliable
The only way this car could be restored would be to replace the whole base-unit from a rust free car... and then take it from there...with new panels etc! Sheldon is right, its a great parts car and not worth restoring unless you have pots of money and not worried about the amount spent/versus its real value in todays market place. At the end of the day its value would be better if it was all original and in great shape. Would you buy a car that had a base unit, panels etc all from different cars - there is no value in it. As much as we love our P6s, they're not pre-war Bugatti's. Parts cars keep good cars alive for all.
Having seen PeteC and what he has done, it's savable, but only if some panels can be sourced, and you have very good welding skills, I have no idea if anyone does panels for rovers, but it could be done, probably only if the vehicle had some sentimental value would it be worth the effort.
LE registration: registered in North West London (my old 1999 SEAT Ibiza was registered there). A shame that it cannot be saved 😕 but at least it will prolong the life cycle of another P6. 🙂
Good call to use it as parts so many other cars can be saved by parting it out, and you wont find them in scrap yards any more so a parts car will come in very handy ,You are saving other cars and that is a good thing .My mate broke one up many years ago for parts as floor to sill are was completely rotten it looked good on the outside though .
Shame it's not savable but at least the parts can be used to keep others alive. We had a white one then later a brown one back in the 70s both V8s before ending up with the SD1 V8 Loved them all And strip it and shelve the lot ready to reuse
Smart move - I've had a '69 P6 V8 for nearly 20 years now and in that time more and more spares are unobtainium without donor cars. You're making the right call, that front crossmember is terminal for a cost-effective rebuild. The interior alone would save £££'s.
One possibly that might have happened to this car was that some TV/film company would have got it, made it look nice where you could otherwise see any rust issues, then used it in e.g. a TV programme set in the 1970s, & by end destroyed it.

I had a 2000sc that got to the stage it needed a full resto . After adding up the cost of all the panels I decided to sell it as it would have cost me way too much . And that had a decent cross member and boot floor as well .
It's a shame, but that car is knackered. Anyone who tried to restore would likely never finish after spending thousands of pounds and getting nowhere. You're doing the right thing, in my opinion.
Sad to see it's a lot crustier than it looks, but it's got oodles of decent parts on it. Strip all the good stuff off it, bolt on some shagged panels then sell the bare bones to a banger racer.
Hi Sheldon, I love p6 rovers and I've had 5 over the years and it seems that the metal on cars this year was very quick to rot. I had one similar and it rotted around the floor above the rear axle etc..I remember someone in the p6 rover club had a new base unit as I was offered it back some 20 years ago..However you are right it is a good spares car..looking forward to more videos..
I had 3 of these rot boxes over the years followed by 9 SD1s. Gave up due to the rot and then switched to V70R Volvos. Just glad I can't drive anymore.
You are breaking this rover to save more rovers 👍 To me beyond repair and like me I’ve advertised beetles in this state but no one is brave enough to tackle the rest hence breaking a beetle . Plus you are making better money in breaking than selling as is
My Father was Foundry Foreman in the 70's and his knowledge of steel and iron was 2nd to none, In his words , "70's Steel is absolute shi*e and anything made by Ford Triumph and Rover will be a miracle if they last past when I'm gone " He passed away in Jan 1993 so.....Personally anything now is living on borrowed time . I think you saved yourself the searching for parts, and many many hours of pain and blood .....Not to mention spending power .......Go for it chaps !!!! A few weeks ago sold a 71 3500's white with black webasto passed mot 15 yrs ago done 60 miles since very little rust beginning to think I sold it too cheap
Oh blast. what a same. Oh well as you say enough is enough. I really did want to see this back on the road, glad I didn't buy it now. Well couldn't, it was left just that bit too long on stands.
We found a P6 3500 in an old council garage today in West London. Probably been there for 2-3 decades, but it had to moved because the site had been sold for redevelopment. Had to call the scrap boys to drag it out with their lorry. I hope it finds a good home (we think the scrap boys knew it was special and saw a profit in selling it on rather than just scapping it).
The mistake people make with classic cars is labouring under the misconecption that they must be a. "saved", and then b. restored to absolute perfection. Fact is, it's here, and it runs. Why not just stick it in for an MOT and fix what needs fixing to a workmanlike standard, get it on the road and just enjoy it for what it is? It won't be failing for superficial rust, and you might find that a couple of weekends will have it road legal.
Never in all my p6 days have I seen a crossmember like that! Looks to have been leaking water internally! It is restorable by the right person but honestly, who would bother. It will never be worth big money and even if you do the work yourself, it would probably cost more in parts alone than it will ever be worth, As for being a late one, it certainly is but the late ones are few and far between because of how badly they rot. In fairness it should probably have been scrapped years ago. Thanks to previous owners and you, at least the parts will have a new lease of life.
As for those who bemoan the breaking of such cars, one question - why don’t you take it on?! The answer is the same as anyone else with sense, it just ain’t worth it!
But considering how long this P6 has been sat I think its not really all that bad,the Engine Sounds Wonderful.... Back in the day folk would drive very Rotten cars... If an expert welder guy could maybe do it on the Cheap? Always good to focus on the positive side😊
Yes this is true but this one would be un safe to drive I mean I have driven rotten cars around but this one is way to extreme so it's a donor car sadly

I have yet to see a P-6, up close and personal, on your Channel that weren’t suffering from a bad case of Auto-Acne. I’m very intrigued by the P-6s and that may be because they were never imported here to America that I’m aware of. But if they’re all as crusty as most of what you’ve shown us how can you ever find any that don’t require severe intervention? Are they all in such poor condition or is it just the price range you’re looking at that you see so much iron oxide?
Another banger for your "field of dreams" .I fully understand your emotional involvement with kismet but 30yrs buying and selling cars with somebody elses money taught me emotions usually cost a lot of time and money which even when completed to your satisfaction only has extra value to YOU cos at auction its just another lot.
Not been in the field for years but yes I see what you mean and your right someone could do this car but the crossmember and bulkhead is where they tend to draw the line. If you would consider subscribing that would be great!
That is comprehensively knackered. Sad to say but it's often the case with P6's. Outer panels look good from 30 yards away (and the camera can also be very flattering) but they hide a base unit that's gone well beyond. The welding on this one looks like I did it! Let's just suppose for a minute you're a masochist with a bottomless wallet (stay with me on this...) and you decide to restore it. Where are most of the replacement parts going to come from? Another parts car! The bits have to come from somewhere. So I'm with you on this, it's completely useless as anything other than a source of parts. Sad but true. Having said all that I have to say I love P6's. A car unlike any other ( people are going to say "It's like a Citroen DS you idiot!" but come on, yes the DS is vaguely similar in some ways but although it's the only car that's in any way similar, it's sufficiently different to the Rover to be an entirely different animal. There's nothing like a DS (apart from a CX, sort of) and there's nothing like a P6.
Hello Sheldon I enjoy your videos and know you are a rover man. however I am more of a Morris Oxford man myself and as I live in Ireland (not a lot of parts) I just wanted to know if you ever come across parts for the oxfords I am in need of front and rear bumpers. any help would great. keep up the good work.
This car looks like it had a home resto about 20 years ago or more multiple diffrent colours lots if new rot and rot that was poorly repaired. If it can donate needed parts for other projects its properly the best option for a car so far gone.
If you can see metal cancer to that degree on the outside it'll be 1000 times worse inside, especially if it's already had work done! How long has this car actually been rotten? Only worth anything as a parts car, you're doing the right thing Sheldon 👍 As a body specialist I can speak on these matters.
It's interesting to note that the early 2000s had four interior lamps(!) - the two mentioned below by Philip Willis, plus a third in the lower edge of the front parcel shelf above the passenger glove box, and a fourth lamp, a twin of the one I just mentioned, above the driver's glove box. I think that on later models all these lamps were deleted and replaced by just one central lamp in the middle of the roof. (If I am wrong I'm sure Sheldon, or another expert, will correct me.) I expect this vehicle would have one central interior lamp. Sad to see one with so much rust. Hard to believe actually.
What a crying shame, eh? It looked so promising.....and then you washed it and took the camera in closer and suddenly.....not so much. The rot in the boot lip - yeah, no biggie.....but where else will it have gone that's close to there? Sure enough - the boot floor corners......but wait! There's more! Today only, you can have a ratty welded sill that hides a multitude of sins! Be quick - it will not be there tomorrow! Yeah, we know mate - it will be on the floor because the moths have stopped holding hands. The problem with the P6 is similar to that with the P5, and the Triumph Stag and 2500. There are so many exposed and unwelded seams and places where a small amount of water (or road-salty water) can seep in and get a great patch of rot established without being detected. Worse still, they do it in places where there are multiple joins or multiple layers and hide it away from everyone until one day the metal is compromised so badly that it starts showing on the outside. Then it's like an onion......you peel layer after layer off, trying in vain to find the source of the Nile / Genesis / where everything began (pick your pejorative) and when you finally do, you look at the 3-foot piece of tin - which is now all that remain of your project - and wonder why you started at all. There comes a time where things go past their use-by date. Unfortunately, this baby expired some years ago. The paintwork wasn't great but the moths are eating the car from the inside out and seeing the lumps on the body panels and under the vinyl roof still on the car, even what you CAN see isn't good news, let alone what you cannot see until you pull it to pieces. At least Kizmet will have a great little engine, box, and interior (along with miscellaneous bits of trim) and there will be plenty of spares for other vehicles. I totally agree that if one tired and uneconomical to fix car can potentially save six others, then by all means strip it of what's still worth anything to anyone and send the remains of the rusting hulk away to be recycled. Even a P6 V8 in that state would not be worth putting bck on the road, mate. I don't see the point in overcapitalising on a vehicle unless I am going to keep it for many years and get my money's worth out of it in reliable classic transport (in as far as that's possible)....but even THAT has it's limits. You wouldn't spend 18-20 grand on the restoration needs for Kizmet, would you? Well, not intentionally, eh? Ignore the haters. You do you. They did not find the car - you did. It is obvious it's not as good as initially thought, but there are (as you said) many good bits on it. She's a donor - always was. All the best, eh?
Great comment mate and yes you are right even though ut could be done why would you! And Kismet will still cost me 10K in the end but she is far from buggered and I have no intention of braking or re shelling her I bought this car as a donor and that so what she is going to be used as!
I have a growing desire for a unmolested Zircon blue 2,000TC with Sandalwood or Buckskin interior which must have the “down light” over the dash behind the rear view mirror, and the second interior lamp over the rear seats. Is this normal, or do I need therapy..? 😰

Looks as bad as my old Honda civic it needed an mot so me and the wife sat there all day with fiberglass did all the underneath and rear wheel arch both sides then black paint took it for the mot and the guy said its actually a pretty solid car it passed lol
This doesnt work the voice is adenoidal upper middle class, yet here we are on a brought cheap in the 80s housing estate around the back of some poorly maintained ramshackle garages with a old rotted banger . Bizzare.
Not really the cross meber is one of the most important parts take that out and the car will loose it's strength! Also do you really have a UR Quattro love those cars!
