All of these builds make me appreciate the engineering that goes into OEM parts and I'd be inclined to mess with as little of it as humanly possible if I expect any level of street driveability. As soon as I'd start modifying for track performance I'd waive any expectation of a quiet comfortable ride.

Have to be brave & test stuff out if you want to improve something, with an initial idea considering as many factors as possible although it is hard and not possible to consider every factor in every case. Not a huge fan of the random prices of original parts that's why I've loved aftermarket but for people who have a endless amount of money I could easily see having a OE bias.

That clunk is pinion angle. It will put you sideways under hard brakes into pinion angle push. Put a go pro under the car and film it. Those spherical bearings I ran on my car and the noise and vibration was horrible. So I made the mount to the body a super pro rubber style mount. Much much better and it helped with axle tramp and better articulation under load 👍 good work

A lot of it is natural as well with a light flywheel and a strong lsd/1.5 or 2 way lock.
@gqswamp

Flywheel -- If you put in a lightweight flywheel, it can/will resonate. The sound is exactly like what I hear on mine. You'll learn to hate/live with it. My next clutch replacement will be the time I go back to OEM on it. This just made me think for a moment. Wonder if a good harmonic balancer might help... I'm thinking maybe so. Thought I'd share the brainstorming.

The slight noise is worth the throttle response

The 3000rpm rumble is a very common thing in the Altezza too. If you change to a more solid shifter it will become even more apparent.
@dancarlos1216
@dancarlos1216 Год назад
@@bobbyhulse378 I put a lighter shift knob on my ND1 and that’s the only modification on the whole car, and that made the knob rattle at lower rpm/high load ranges.
@emc3065
@emc3065 Год назад
Could definitely be THE problem or at least dramatically contributing to it. If it happens at a particular RPM, it's definitely some resonance going on. Dual Mass doesn't just make engagement easier, it also eliminates a lot of NVH and resonance. As someone else said though, from experience, if you're building a performance focused car the pick up and responsiveness is worth the noise and harshness.

For a street car you'd enjoy having bushed 4-links significantly more. I switched to rose link jointed 4-links in my AE86 but got tired of the clunks. Ended up swapping the ends for urethane (keeping the adjustable links so still tunable) which removed the clunks (same issue, clunks at low speed). Dialing in the working angle for the driveshaft UJ's to both 1.5 degrees front and rear smoothed out the drive as well.

SA, 26 years ago, I enlisted into the Army and sold my '77 OEM Celica (with a trunk, not a fastback). It was a 'GT' trim with a 5-speed manual transmission and the 20R 2.2-litr engine. I bought the car for $700 and wish I still had it. I still have the OEM shift knob from it though.

As pleased as you are with the rear end... OEM cars did not have that noise from gear slack until you had beat the living daylights out it. Think I'd get a true pro to dig into it, configure it, maybe make an episode out of it. Brake/rotor noise also troubles me - but hey, it's just me. Such a fine, fine car otherwise... Connie deserves a massage by the best hands out there 😛

The coast resonance is the gear lash transmitting from your transmission. Its usually contributed by a lightened clutch and flywheel with an old gearbox.

You may think me insane but I had diff noise troubles in my E46 M3 at very slow speeds while turning. Like in a parking lot. I tried some Royal purple for LSD and it made it worse. I tried some friction modifier additive from Liqui Moli to no avail! Then before I spent $2000 plus on a rebuild I decided to use the actual BMW diff fluid which is STUPID expensive at $90 per 500ML and the diff needed 1.2L of fluid. Which was why I tried the other fluids first. Like magic NO More Noise. That was 4 years ago and it's still as quiet as a mouse. Do what you will with that ture info. Oh it is a factory "M" clutch diff.
@PANTYEATR1

That 3000 rpm and lower coasting issue could be an issue in the overrun section of the VE or ignition tuning table. Maybe more fuel is needed to add the slightest load or momentum while coasting? I'm having a bucking that produces a diff clunking at 2000 rpms and lower that i suspect is in the tuning. Good video guys🏆

I have a resonance at ~3000rpm on my NB2 MX-5 (lightweight clutch/flywheel/kaaz 2way/mazdaspeed diff/engine mounts). I only get it in gears 1 2 3 4 on lift off coasting. I think it is the synchros in the gearbox not anything to do with the diff. I've heard something similar before in 60 series Land cruiser and had the gearbox rebuilt. Noise was gone after that. That box did have like half a million Km's on though and my MX-5 has 160k on it.

in regards to setting the wear pattern on the coast side, did you experiment with setting the pinion depth? i did notice shims being added for the spacer. but you can move the pinion towards the centerline of the ring gear by adding shims to the other bearing. this would affect both drive and coast side and provide a different range of results for wear patterns after setting preload/lash.

Not sure exactly what you are running for diff as I thought I saw Tomei stamped on the diff. I am running an entire weir 4.77 gearset w/ maxxgrip lsd kit rebuild in an ae86, which was assembled and sent to me by Spencer Weir. I have about 20k miles on it no issues, he always told me to run the non synthetic valvoline that has the additive and keep the housing clean and I have never had that chatter or an issues. May be a different setup so I may be mispoken here, just thought id add.
