Big muff is more articulate, more natural sounding like a good old muff It depends on what you like , if you like a modern aggressive sounding muff go with JHS muff but if you looking for warmer sounding muff , it's the big muff.
The vintage was definetly warmer and fuller (could hear that through phone speakers), but not so much of a difference that i care and want to buy the vintage one. I mean 5+1 amazing muffs in one small pedal!
I contacted JHS about all of the settings on the Muffuletta. Surprisingly, they said that the Pi setting on the Muffuletta is actually a green Russian Big Muff and not a black and red style Big Muff, so this may explain the differences in tone between the red and black Big Muff and the JHS Pi setting. Also, the star setting on the JHS is the black version of the Russian Big Muff.
I'm confused why he doesn't turn the tone knob on the original past 11 o'clock... The entire time he never goes past 11... So as far as a demo this is kind of surprising… Would the original big muff sound more warm and more similar to the JHS? Also it appears as though he is flipping a switch on the back of the original? More base is added when he flips the switch. The JHS does not have that switch.
Nice demo Roman. This was the side by side I was looking for after hearing about this pedal. If the tone was noon or past would it help add dynamics to get closer to your original? It sounds warmer but from a select 6, sounds pretty good.
I think the only good muff clones I heard so far are the stomp underfoot rams head the jhs stuff doesn't sound as good due to the sustain not being strong enough
I made the mistake to buy one. It sounds "fake" to my ears. I tried an italian clone of the Green Russian which sounds rich and BIG. I will go for it 🤣
The reason they sound different is.. I don't thing the big Muff PI in the Muffuletta is an Op Amp version and the 1978 one is an Op Amp version.. Probably v5. But even EHX hasn't been able to clone the Op Amp Big Muff properly. Ive had many.. Currently have a v4 and v5 (both op amps) and the small box EHX reissue of the Op Amp version, and it's tonaly not the same.
as far as nailing that scooped mids muff tone the JHS doesnt do it. sounds nice though, just too close to having a flat mids EQ to sound like the original. I'd like to listen to the other modes!
