A joy to remember as I was a student at that game. Hank Nichols stood at mid court with an ear to ear grin. We were screaming, booing until Chick Yonaker floated the air ball. Sail with the Pilot advertisement still makes me laugh.
The ACC put in the shot clock in 1982-83 and used the experimental 3-point line that was 19'. By the start of the 1983-84 season, the funny looking 3 point line was gone but the shot clock stayed
I was a die-hard Carolina fan too, and my dad was furious too! He'd loved the Heels growing up during the Frank McGuire 1950s and never warmed to Dean. I constantly had to war with family and relatives who pulled for Wake and State. My pop was going to explode over Dean's strategy here! Well, we won the title a week later!
Could you imagine if there was social media in the late 70's when Carolina was just holding on to the ball seemingly forever. This game along with the 1982 ACC Tournament Final caused the ACC to experiment with a shot clock
I never heard of a campus president signing a contract for a new student union building, before a rival game. One could see a new arena, but a student union? That student union must've been of utmost importance.
I'm a DIE-HARD Heel fan and I remember this game from childhood and how my Father was fuming at Coach Smith for as he said " Pulling that mess from years ago ".... He was referring to the 21-20 game from the ACC Tournament years prior lol 😆.... God rest Coach Smith he definitely stuck to what he believed.
To add to my comment from above, as a passionate Carolina fan back then as a kid, I HATED the "GTH Carolina, GTH" chant. But I have to smile now. Great time to be a kid in the ACC.
Dean Smith is so 🗑. Holding the ball for 11 minutes WHEN THEY'RE LOSING. What a genius. That "genius" did the 4 corners vs Marquette when they came back vs Marquette. Cost them the 1977 national championship
