1979 BMW M1 Procar Championship - Rd 3 Donington Park - Gunnar Nilsson Memorial Trophy

This is the race that convinced my step-father to buy one of these cars in 1983. For 4 ears we owned a red BMW M1 and it was definitely a neck turner....until my step-brother took it into his mind to steal it and race it in the Palos Verdes switchbacks and crashed into a rock. Yes, a rock. Fiberglass plus rocks....total rebuild. The car was being worked on by Vasek Polak and before it could ever get finished, it was purchased by someone and I believe it resides in Italy now.

People always talk about senna at nurburgring in the 190e but never about piquet in the m1's.

Great video. A lovely bit of archive footage. Donington park was a beautiful circuit back then. All the nice trees on the infield before the circuit was ruined in a bid to get the British Grand Prix there. Such a shame.

Lovely. I have other video from that event. I suspect it's the last video of Fangio driving in the UK and Hunts last semi official drive in an F1 car. A neighbour of mine has two or three of those M1 cars.

WHAT a Christmas present right there! As a kid Scandinavian fan of Nilsson I never knew about a Donnington Memorial dedicated to the Swede. And what a mindboggling opener interview of celebrities...and Harrison "..'n quite old cars...but so am I"...and what age is he there? 39? I'm 51, soon 52 and but feels like Methusalem right now. And the race of one of my all time favourite race car series...just so perfect all around!

Innanzitutto grazie per la presenza di due persone meravigliose: jakie steward e George Harrison .Complimenti alla B.M.W M1 di Nelson Piquet 285 km/h e già l'avantreno era molto leggero! La macchina tendeva a sbandare. Tutto in un progetto che avrebbe dovuto raggiungere i 350 km/h, delusi i poveri tedeschi quando provatala nella galleria del vento si accorsero che il bolide tendeva a decollare, avrebbero avuto la facoltà di appesantirla,ma...rifiutata questa ultima opzione si preferì abbandonare per sempre il progetto ingegneristico...E 26!!!
