I miss my 6.9 I have a 7.3 idi, but nothing ever piped like the 6.9. With the back windows rolled down in my old 86 F350 4door it sounded like a machine gun going off when driving by a guardrail.
Cummins put some cam timing in those things so that they could rev higher than most of the competitors V8s. They were used in some military vehicles that needed some speed.
These were common when I started trucking in the 70s. You could always tell when one was coming because they had a sound of their own.. Thanks for sharing. It brought back some good memories. I drove over 4 million miles and sold my last truck in 2011 mostly because of the new engines with all that exhaust crap on em.
Enjoyed this a lot , I ran a low boy for a couple of years the tractor was an old Mack logging tractor from Canada had a 15 double over and a 3406A with a brake saver, didn't get rich but it paid the bills. I ran box freight , flatbeds ,tankers and low boys over the years, enjoyed the low boys the best👍Keep on trucking brother !
Love the point of view of the camera! Love the 903! I have a 1971 Kenworth with a V-903 I’m restoring. I also ran VT-903-M’s in the Coast Guard. Thanks for the video!
That's cool! Did you hear about the original KW from the 70's tv show "Movin On"? They want to put the original VT903 back in it! At 2:17 you can barely hear the 903 accelerate. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-AZjd0pOuoHYH.htmlere you can see and hear the engine. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wxbUF6UyjCo.html
cletrac 12c I know the truck in the first season had a 903. They did a lot of filming around Astoria, OR and it was cool to recognize a lot of filming locations when I was stationed there in the CG. I didn’t realize they took it out of the truck, but it’s cool they want to put a 903 back in!
Nothing like the sound of a v8 diesel with 8 into 1 exhaust. A friend has a 362 Pete with a 3408 Cat with 8 into 1 into twin stacks, doesn't sound the same. It's almost like some exotic supercar sound
The 3408TA was turbo'd in most automotive style applications ( single turbo ), with manifolds and connector pipes to the turbo like a Ford 7.3 Powerstroke. Look up "16V149 V8 Cat" and you can see a cabover Kenworth with a 3408 running with engine shots
@@RomeKG471 No problem! I've been a fan of the older Freightliner trucks for a bit (But I'm mostly into Peterbilt 379/389 rigs and Western Star 4900 and 5700 rigs.) Not really into Freightliner but as said before the older FT trucks are what I'm a fan of (I will say that Freightliner makes a savagely radical Coronado, but their Cascadia trucks SUCK!)
I hated air starters! When they started their trucks in a truck stop beside you it would raise you right off the bunk! Electric starter whirled the motor 500 rpm, air starter 1400 rpm.
These motors can be painfully loud, unmuffled, under load.I have an Australian '79 International Eagle Acco with a 903, 2 into 1 muffler ,single pipe. She had twin stacks years ago but was too loud pulling a trailer.
They do. Scania and volvo here in Aus have the options of v8. But unless you delete all EPA systems you can't hear it. And they don't sound anywhere near as good as the old pre EPA v8
And there ya have it. That’s why the old iron is still around and the new stuff has no shelf life. I say that old Hummin Cummins V-8 was built right the first time and had never really seen any load on the engine. God bless
Was that old truck born with that 8 in it? I saw a lot of KW 925 day cabs with a Cummins 8 in em but I never saw one in a Freightliner. Ford put em in a ton of W1000 COE's. Great video. Thanks for the ride!😎
Yep. Remember the POP in the 10-tons and the amphibs at Ft. Story. And the R/T cranes too. 210 horse I seem to re,member and would wind to 3 grand. They'd run smooth and then splatter and run smooth and splatter but they would run! Is a 915 a 15 speed? Good tranny.
Diamond T it the first truck with V903 These engine offer International Transtar Brockway trucks Diamond Reo Ford LT9000 Autocar Construcktor2 Kenworfh and Peterbilt Mack R700 Freightliner Walter trucks
I put less than 7000 miles on a year and dont run that far. It does great for what I do, now if it was working in the mountains and pulling hard all day then a newer engine would be more dependable.
I just checked with Pittsburgh power about rebuilding my 903 and they said that cummins no longer has anything parts wise in stock. I found a VTA-903 and was going to use it but same parts availability issues. Unfortunately I will have to rely on aftermarket kits and old shops for parts but I'm in the same situation, low usage so it's not too big of a issue and being there aren't many running around anymore I think it's worth the effort.
When it comes to serviceability your almost out of luck, most people I know that can repair them or for that matter owned them new are pushing 70-80 years old. I know of 2 shops that can work on them but they tend to favor newer trucks because of faster parts turnaround but will work on the old stuff when things are slow.
What’s the story with the 903? Truckers didn’t rate them very much, but Cummins still make them to this day for army tanks... so they mustn’t be too bad? This one sounds awesome!
They were ok on the level but not for hill country, they are a shorter stroke and high rpm engine. I don't like to rev mine to the max, there rated 320hp at 3000 rpm, I only run mine up to 21-2200. The military versions are high rpm and are meant for short power runs, I think they put out around 500+ hp, you couldn't run that constant on hyway for long. But ya they do sound good, everyone in my area knows when I'm coming down the road, lol. Massey Ferguson used allot of them in there 4wd ag tractors too.
cletrac 12c Thanks for the reply. In Australia they seem to be most common in short bonnet fords and Kenworth’s. In the latest Cummins magazine I seen at my Dads, it says they are approaching 50 years of being manufactured. And I think in its latest incarnation it has low pressure common rail fuel injection and is rated at 650hp.
The 903 even made it into some city buses, like the Flxible "New Look" series and, in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the Grumman Flxible 870 (Flxible Metro after 1983) series and the Flyer D900 series!
A lot of it has to do with the cam timing. The 903, despite its size is a high revving engine with torque and horsepower higher in the range compared to a traditional straight 6 diesel. If the cam timing, fuel pump calibration and turbo were configured to bring the power in a little sooner, the driving experience would be much different. I believe it would rank right up there with the Mack, Cat and Scania V8s.
Oh Gosh ya! everythings at a standstill! Well its supposed to 50 deg. here Monday !! crazy!! This weather is so messed up! Hope yer doing well! glad to here from ya!!!

@@RomeKG471 Yes 2200 if time is important. No point in flogging it or the fuel bill will sink you with that capacity I was led to believe.. Plenty of pony.
@@Carla-tz7qwjunky? The b series cummins is a legendary motor. If it was so junky I don’t think it would be in production after 34+ years. Of course there has been changes over the years but it’s still the best diesel engine on the market for a pickup truck and medium duty truck todayimo
Ya but I never had an electronic shut down, wait for a regen or warning buzzers going off everytime the engine doesnt feel good. This old cummins just keeps going.
Everyone over here is all gung ho about six cylinders and emission crap. They brag about getting 700-1000 hp from them but they dont hold up for long. I love the tuff sound of V8's. Cummins still makes a V903 700+hp for the Bradley tanks. They had a truck race up in Michigan last year, unreal how they torque those trucks! They are RU-vid also.
