Those days the West Indian pace attack was the most lethal and intimidating. It was a relentless barrage of liquid pace. Though Iam an Indian, i do not have any prejuduces and complexes and unbiased in extolling and eulogising true talent. Majid Khan and Zaheer Abbas were true legends of Pakistan Cricket. Majid Khan was a fear less opening batsman and put to sword the best of pace attacks all over the world. This Majid achieved in an era when the wickets were uncoveted and were subjected to the vagaries of nature and protective gear was scanty or totally absent. He took on the pace bowlers head on. On the other hand, the great Zaheer Abbas was a classy barsman at number four and was totally non contraversial. Even todate, after these many years, Zaheer still has fans, belonging to the by gone era. Zaheer Abbas at the crease was an artist unparalled and was a pundits delight. I opine that Zaheer Abbas has not got what he actually deserves for all his grand achivements in the realm of cricket. Great batsmen and Great Era.
Wrong. There are a total of 24 players who scored a test hundred before lunch. Out of 24 players , 6 players scored on day 1 before lunch and Majid is one of them.
Remember watching it as a 15 year old. Some of the fastest bowling I had ever seen and I was so impressed by Majid and Zaheer as a result; they weren't frightened of anyone as they had great technique. My dad was a great fan of Majid - he said that there was something of the mystic about him and I became a great fan of Zaheer too.
Great batting display by Zaheer Abbas and Majid Khan, especially Zaheer Abbas played a Phenomenal Inning, some of the Sweeps on Fast Bowlers were incredible.
The Pakistan team of the 70s was among the world's best. Zaheer, Majid, Asif, Imran, Sarfaraz, Mushtaq and Javed were all regulars at the English County circuit throughout the late 60s and 70s and Packer WSC in the 70s. It was their bad luck that they did not win WC in 79, which they should have
No dought Zaheer was very good batsman and a lot of specialities. But Miandad was also had some special characters. In comparison by expert Javed Miandad is the best batsman which Pakistan ever produced.
Classical innings, great cricketers of 1979, luck was not with Pak, otherwise they gavr tough time to WI. This match was most interesting than final between WI n England
Man the power in Zed shots.. Zed is a little like right handed brian lara.. The bat lift.. Asian brad man... Superb... In those days west indies pace attack was know as black wind.. kali andhi.. lethal.. and injuring batsman..
I was at the age of 12 praying for six when comentator on radio was saying that Pakistan only six runs behind to achieve require run rate then exactly Zaheer hit six at that moment...Pakistan were comfortably chasing till Zaheer's wicket after that Haroon Rashid came into bat and scored 11 runs in 11 overs..wickets trembling one by one on the other end...
Syed Raza: I was 13 years but I heard a lot about marvelous innings of two Pakistanis...Had they continued their innings, Pakistan could have won the match
Haroon Rasheed was the worst player in the team ...once he dropped a crucial catch in that world cup ...most probably of Mike briarly of Eng. And I hate Mansoor akhtar too...don't understand why the selectors selected him.
They stood for that much time against such brutal fast bowling attack without any protective gears like we have today and no limit of bouncers itself is a great achievement.
it is clearly noticeable MAJID N ZAHEER never spoke a word with each other, such was animosity, perhaps pecker thing,Majid hardly middled any delivery, scored runs in 3rd man area.
